Imagine you're just casually drawing your web manga and you know it's not all that good. And now its been animated by some of the most veteran animators out there.
@@stephaniecronin2056 That’s probably only because he aspires to draw like Murata. It’s a courtesy thing in Japan. As far as authority figures for the OPM canon goes, ONE is the sensei.
@@stephaniecronin2056 that is the courtesy of japanese people where manga artists are thought in high regards. Sensei is a honorific title for the artists
@@notfriendlyeggwithamustach5948 I am just wondering how do you draw like that how long does it even take to draw one panel like the first panel looked professional am just wondering how do you do that
Honestly after seeing One's webcomic I was surprised at how readable it is. Dude has a great baseline, and works really great as a storyboard. Janky but really works and he keeps improving.
ONE is a really talented storyteller, not just because of the writing but also how well the drawings/paneling guide the story, even if the artwork is technically speaking rough.
Honestly, there’s something really charming about ONEs art style. And you can definitely see him improve more and more near the tail end of the mob psycho manga and the Reigen spin off.
Not to say that Murata's drawings aren't this too, but ONE's have such a "genuine" feel to them that kinda gives it the art-equivelant of feeling warm and fuzzy inside. He knows his ability doesn't exactly compare to Murata's, but he still tries and damn well succeeds in creating amazingly detailed panels.
Not to burst your bubble or anything, but one ended up having assistants draw a lot of the later half of mob psycho, he'd do the storyboarding and draw the general image and then they'd draw over it in his style.
@@lukechase6346 Well I wasn’t aware of that, my bad LOL. But even so, I feel as if the progression of his work through out the one punch man web comic does warrant some credit. He might not be that great at anatomy even now but the composition for some of his drawings later on is pretty incredible.
ONE is my favourite mangaka and after seeing Miura passing away, it scares me that all these Mangaka don't know how much they are appreciated. Thank you for this video.
@@theshotgungamer7006 oh berserk, was a good manga but but anime animation made it not immersive to watch the anime, whenever the cgi comes up i just start finding mistake and weird things in the cgi
@@OrRaino that would be the ass 2016 version, however, if you're looking for a speed run I suggest the 1997 and if you wanna get a more graphically better view, then maybe the netflix movies will also suffice, but the 2016 version gets the lore VERY wrong so I can't watch it for that reason alone
i know how great murata art is,but it’s sad that people forget about the creator and thought yusuke murata the one with all of the ideas. you can’t deny this, most anime fan don’t know about this. i respect ONE for giving us such a great story and comedy in one punch man
One's story telling is well done. His art is admittedly not good but you can still understand what's going on and what he wants to express to us. He actually even improved later on, of course not to Murata's skills but better nonetheless. Cause if one wasn't as good as he was, I nor thousands of readers wouldn't have read and loved the story as it is regardless of skill in drawing. My respects to One-Sensei and Murata sensei!
@@NAS3_55 murata's work is clean and well cheographed , i have never seen action on paper feels alive , kentaro is this sketchy style which is totaly good , but somtimes i cant see shit
For me... I didn't like S2 because the story went to another direction (Like murata's redrawn version). The original web comic story is still as funny as the first season of the anime.
The only reason I didn’t like it is because it rushed the story so much to get through the hero Hunter arc, just search up how many chapters are in season 1 then what’s in season 2
@@LZPFilms so? And One didn’t think there would be a pro to come in and redraw his manga to release it into publication. He just did it because he wanted to. Now look at him. His art has gotten much better and people are anticipating his webcomic chapters to drop as much as the manga if not more so.
@@LZPFilms point is you don’t need one as long as you feel good and accomplished about the things you do you don’t need a “professional”. If one comes then that’s just a bonus
Oh, you didn’t mention that Murata had a major health scare before starting to draw OPM and pulled some strings and made the OPM Manga a real serialized thing because he wanted to spend his last moments making something he loved. Thankfully, he recovered and is still working on it!
Kentaro muira has passed away. I guess the hiatus goes on forever. You should do a tribute episode as respect to his lifetime of making us fans have some of the best experiences ever reading a book. Prayers go out to his family. RIP guts ❤️
The thing I love most about One's art is that it's the level of bad that it ends up being inspirational. You can look at some of the best manga artists in the world and think "I can never be like that" there is that feeling of if it's not perfect it's not worth it. However, you look at One, that idea disappears and it makes you want to go create your own comic even if your art might not be the best.
I hope ONE and Murata’s current relationship and dynamic keeps going for years to come just like Type-Moon’s Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi. Really wholesome stuff. Thanks for covering this.
You talked about this being the only true scene where a web comic, got adapted true. But we can't forget about Chris Chan's Sonichu and how close his got to being redone by fans.
I think it is also worth mentioning how ONE has actually improved after years of practice. In the first chapters and arcs, he already had the vision in terms of storyboard, but the drawings were really sketchy. In the latest chapters, while the technique itself is still amateurish, the quality of the illustrations themselves is much better: faces are expressive, shading with cross hatching well used and the anatomy of the characters is no longer that off as it used to be.
The whiplash you get from finishing a newer mob psycho volume then seeing the ‘you’re reading this the wrong way’ page at the end of the book with an earlier page is strong
I like to think One is the Saitama to Murata's Genos. One's writing and humor are the base for the manga to exist, and Murata is the flashy, super cool, skilled, strong and fast follower of the work.
Death Note is a great story but I have to say, Murata has surpassed it's art in One Punch Man by leaps and bounds. Dude had no idea what he was talking about.
3:18, ok this part here, Murata changed a big face baby caterpillar into a dragon eldritch world eater being. That's some good interpretation of one's work.
I would really enjoy an artistic evolution video on Vinland Saga. The manga started out in a shonen magazine with simpler art but after switching to seinen you can see the author’s artwork really blossoming. Its a series that means a lot to me :)
I'm dissapointed you didn't mention the fact that the original one punch man is in fact a web manga. Being a mangaka is extremely tough work, and pretty much the only way to be popular/sell any copies is to be signed at a publishing company. At least over in japan, webtoons, which are mostly korean manwha share a different story. But, just the sheer fact that one punch man is so good, that it took off as an web manga is a mountainous accomplishment.
For the manga based on a manga i guess you could use Naoki Urasawa’s manga Pluto being based on Astroboy by Osamu Tezuka but Pluto is more of Urasawa’s spin on adapting one of the arc’s from astroboy is his own darker way.
@@Yhan_Sugesta But most of the key animators of One punch man season 1 were from Studio Bones...the director hired them...especially the last fight...saitama vs boros...it was animated by Yutaka Nakamura(a freelancer but mostly work for studio bones)
I like that you highlighted One's skills in paneling. The juxtaposition of the well presented story with the wonky anatomy is actually pretty compelling in its own way. It makes his work feel somehow more sincere, rather than the 'low effort' vibe often ascribed to less professional art.
I once heard someone say that if you draw anything with enough balls, even unprofessional art can connect with the audience. I didn't really know what that meant, till i began reading ONE's works.
This was really interesting, and I think the ability for ONE to add extra to the manga through Murata is really cool. There is so much extra content in the manga version, that it adds a lot more
3:35 - The only other example I can think of is Horimiya, which was originally a web comic much like one punch man, that got picked up by a professional artist for a full manga run, that follows the general story structure but with some manga original parts, also much like one punch man. I followed both the webcomic and the manga for both series and it really is a unique experience reading the same story of the same characters in different styles.
If you're taking suggestions I would love to see an "Artistic Evolution of Soul Eater"! One of the most noticeable art style changes I've witnessed in a manga (JoJo aside).
3:33 A lot of webtoons get rereleased with updated art like this, actually. Because of the way the website works, authors who have proven themselves popular in the unpaid section get a chance to go back after they've improved their art skills and release their comic again for money, making use of the expertise they've accumulated after the first go.
As an Artists I envy One's style. I'd rather have these interesting drawings with the humor, than just drawing pretty. This is why many Artist's intentionally draw "bad" and "ugly" Also he has great knowledge about compositing. He knows what he is doing.
Happy someone brought up the drawing ability thing, I often see in "best manga art" conversations people only emphasizing on that and it pisses me off, personally I do actually preffer ones styleto muratas as I feel it fits his simpler panelling alot more
plus sometimes Murata's interpretations of the original kind of miss the point sometimes like there's a even blend of severity and comedy in a lot of moments in OPM and sometimes it gets lost and there's some parts where tatsumaki/tornado looks all sexed up when like. it fits the moment way more for her to keep the gremlin look lol
I’m glad you highlight ONE’s talents here as well. His style is charming, and he absolutely knows what he’s doing re: comic paneling and flow. Cool vid!
Once I accidentally read a manga of One punch man that was so poorly drawn that it looked unprofessional. Now I know I was reading the original OPM manga.
What I learnt after reading ONE's One Punch Man and AoT is that it's not about art it's about storytelling. You don't have to be an exceptional artist to tell a good story.
I think "Baki The Grappler" manga by Keisuke Itagaki would make a great "evolution" or retrospective video. The change in quality from chapter 1 to current volumes is astounding. I believe the art depicting the human body, internal and external, as well as his ability to draw how a human body looks and moves in real life so expertly would make a great video.
This reminds me of Ryukishi07's visual novels. Whenever he makes a new vn he draws all the sprites himself and they are really shotty but kind of charming. Like OPM, the amateur drawings aren't good but the writing is amazing, and later they both got full reduxes with much better art.
I personally think Ryukishi's art has a lot more soul in it than the updated art. When I first read through Higurashi, it was on the Steam release which had the choice between the original and updated art. I played with the updated art because at first glance it was an obvious decision, but I quickly found that the updated art was simply soulless. It was shiny and glossy and clean and the characters all look like they're staring into space without a thought in their head. Meanwhile, Ryukishi's character art is thrumming with personality, and his skill at conveying precise emotion through facial expression is unmatched. I switched to his artwork and fell in love with it, and I haven't looked back. Though I will say that the PS3 sprites for Umineko do a pretty good job of translating Ryukishi's style in a more skilled way. His art for Ciconia, meanwhile, looks better than ever, and I'm excited to see how it will evolve going forward.
@@kingcrimson4133 personally I absolutely love the ps3 sprites for Umineko. They are, in my opinion, the best possible sprites for Umineko. They also have the improved backgrounds and superb voice acting befitting of what is, in my opinion, the best piece of fiction of all time. Higurashi on the other hand has a pretty subpar track record with the updated sprites. The sprites aren't bad, but they are a tad uninspired.
Honestly, i dont think ryūkishi is an amature He said it himself that he doesn't have skill in evrything but.. Hi is perfect when it comes to.drawing facial expressions...i dont think any other visual novels having the same amazing expressions as his ... And i think he is struggling with his devine passion and determination and his art...he will probably improve more...he is a good artist with that being keo at mind... I mean...he is passionate and willing to work, even if he makes mistakes
Muira san is no longer with us. Thank You Kentaro Muira, the Shakespeare of Manga and One of the greatest artist of all time, the one who can come into the same class as Dante, Albert Einstein, HR Gieger, and Hayao Miyazaki along with Stanley Kubrick, Tolkein and Richard Feynman. Even though you could not finish the story, we all got the core message. You will be in our hearts forever.
It's cool thinking about it like this. ONE isn't very artistic, but his storytelling and humorous jokes he tells when you're reading One Punch Man keeps you hooked onto it. The characters he develops with each chapter is so satisfying, and it's hard not to enjoy reading it. He is the *personality* of OPM. Now, Murata wasn't the one who created the story, and some would agree that he isn't the best storyteller, but you can clearly see how much of a professional he is when it comes to drawing. He is the *appearance* of OPM.
this would have had more impact if it were focused on the evolution of the original artists art and not just the early chapters of it vs the redraws for the manga because i think that its ignoring muratas influence own one's own art in his orignial webcomic and how it changes over time and not just comparing one's early work to murata who's style was already perfected long before he started work on one punch man
Crazy to see how ONE got so far with his comic, and how much talent he has as a writter and even as an artist! It really shows the love and effort he put into his work, even to the point of getting the atention of a veteran artist like Murata!
I don't think there is any other action based Manga that has detail as much as opm, some of the panels/drawings are so flooded with detail, someone would think it was made for a canvas.
@@doburu4835 ah yes....i remeber assistant from my hero academia made his own manga which had highly detailed art...but most people couldn't understand what was happening in every panel...you need to take time to understand what he is drawing...they are good...but not easy to follow
3:43 there's Wolf Guy:Wolfen Crest, Amon:The Darkside of the Devilman (Although the direct adaptation shot for shot is at the end), and Cyber Blue Remake
ONE really got two of his manga turned into anime and artists still think they have to be good at drawing to get their comic out there smh. I'm one of those artists lmao
THANK YOU FOR POINTING OUT THE PANELLING FROM ONE!! People are always turned off by the art and never try to look past when I ask them to see for themselves The composition, text, and layout communicates exactly the feeling of the situation.
I have always loved One Punch Man just from the first episode. Imo, what makes him so lovable as a character is because he is just like a normal man with superpowers, and he is also a very funny in most of the scenes he’s in. I love how despite Saitama having the power to destroy the world, he still follows and obeys the laws and rules. I always loved the part where he goes shopping or comes back home holding grocery bags. Not only that, he has a strong mentality which is the main reason why he is this strong in the first place, Saitama is my favorite anime character of all time. ❤
Whenever I'm stuck at art i always look at the panels where saitama first meets sonic and sonic is showing of his speed to saitama, it always amazes me how Murata effortlessly displays motion on his drawings it's almost as if it's an animation or rather a flip book.
Fantastic video! This is an interesting subject I haven't really seen tackled about OPM. But it's true that there is something very, very unique about that dynamic, a lot ot do with their friendship. Murata's style also just works with One's sense of humour from what I've seen from their other short collaborative works. I can't wait for the scene where Saitama picks his nose for a full page spread. I can already tell that Murata's trying to build up all the characters, all the threats for that one moment. It really blew me away when I first read it and is probably one one the jokes that have made me laugh the most, ever, due to the sheer relief the following panel creates.
The fight between Garou and Saitama actually had some really great artwork from One, especially the panel of Garou’s big winged monster form staring down at Saitama.
I had no idea ONE actually drew it first, that's amazing. This just highlights how important a script and story is, thank you for this video. Have a great day. Rip Miura
one is an absolute inspiration for me, i've always wanted to create a story and the bits and pieces i've shared about it always get good feedback (which is incredible, i'm so thankful lol) but no matter how hard i try, i just can't sit down and actually draw it the way i want it to, especially with perspective and when i discovered opm by one i was just mindblown
I think the most amazing thing is that One proved that gorgeous art isn't necessary to be successful, you just need to have good writing and you can go far.
Same thing happened with AoT too. They only let AoT be published cause the story was good, but everybody kept rejecting Iseyama cause of his poor artwork. They placed so much importance on the story and forced Iseyama to know his story down to the letter to make up for it.
The difference of One Punch Man Manga and Webcomic is not just a different art style, the plot behind these two follows a different way, and Murata and One are dialoguing between these two paths to give information of the OPM universe in a such creatively way that amazed me. This is unique, even the publishing data of the Manga and Webcomic are close, and the "dialogue" generaly occurs in these new chapters... Just amazing.
About SS2. Oh, please. Murata's art looked more "animated" than JC Staff's shitty animation, which is incredibly ironic considering JC Staff almost adapted Murata's panels 1-to-1.
Bro, that’s bullshit and you know it. Wanna see actual 1-1 panels being adapted, go watch gokushufudou. You don’t know what bad animation is. Season 2 was really good at the end too, with the garou and genos scenes. You’re just pulling shit out of your ass.
Dude season 2 wasn’t that bad mate. Sure they definitely could have done better overall but they didn’t do so bad. Only fight I didn’t like was Genos v Sonic. Nothing else was that bad, in fact it was actually pretty good. Season one is just insanely good. It wasn’t gonna be easy matching up to that and they didn’t.
OPM really makes me hope that some day more outsider-manga will be able to get this level of popularity and acclaim. I'm not even a huge fan of the series, but the look and feel of ONE's artwork is just so oddly charming and refreshing as hell amidst a sea of A1-pictures-style Slice of Life shows and followups to one-cour series I haven't watched
I did find it hilarious when the Anime sometimes chose to draw the characters in the webcomic's style. Like the scene at 1:20 where Tatsumaki wants Saitama to get lost.
