We went from no QB, to overpaying an aging QB, to having one of the best QB rooms in the NFL, with a talented youngster in the wings. Just in case the older guy isn’t over his injury, or isn’t what he once was. All Atlanta did was mess up everyone’s predictions, so they got mad. Not sure what Atlanta did wrong, if Penix grows at a normal rate, that’s the only team who doesn’t have to fear the starter going down. And their backup is on a floating rookie deal. Atlanta just shored up their biggest off-season question. Completely. Remember as the season ended Atlanta was on the hunt. They now have a proven numbers guy, no playoff success, and a young guy with room to grow behind him. I feel like Atlanta helped Atlanta big time, and saved a lot of worry about Cousins.

They didn't need to reach for a QB, there were a lot of guys that you can work up and IMO, they passed on the defensive guys they needed NOW. I think too many teams passed of Jared Verse, how he fell in the Rams lap is beyond me and people are going to be regretting that for a while.

There were better prospects, even at the QB position. Could have drafted Penix at the end of the first round pick or even in the second round. Also, old and injury prone Penix is not a really good prospect. I get Cousins won't be in Atlanta for long, but the execution is awful

The problem isn’t taking Penix at 8. The problem is taking Penix at 8 and signing Kirk to a 180M contract with 115M guaranteed the first 2 years. Reports have recently surfaced that that SEA/LAR/LV were in on trading into the top 10 for Penix meanwhile only WAS/MIN were in on McCarthy. So it shouldn’t be surprising that Penix went this high. People over react with Penix. He was mocked top 10 at the beginning of 2023, was as high as top 5 at one point. Dropped to the 2nd round after the Natty and then shot back up again after clearing medicals and showing athleticism.

I watched the first 10 picks or so. But I left the room while the Falcons were on the clock and when I returned and saw onscreen they picked Penix I thought the NFL Network made a mistake. It didn’t seem possible. But there’s only one way really this pick works out: if Cousins gets injured this season and can’t play. But that’s one helluva way to be right.

As a falcons fan who watched Desmond Ridder even when I told myself I wouldn’t, some of our fans are insane. A guy on the radio this morning actually said we would have been fine with Taylor Heineke I almost spit out my coffee. This man actually played and played trash. We’re currently division favorites bc we have the best vet and with Bryce looking like that up the road we also have the best young prospect in the division..so no Taylor. That’s a great place to be.

Penix is like 23. Like you mentioned Love and Rodgers were drafted younger. Penix spent sooo long in college whereas Love didn't and still needed time. I would argue Love also has higher upside. and lastly, Love wasn't a top 10 pick.

Falcons do not have a good offense. You can't just assume because they have some decent pieces that the offense is going to be good in 2024 & this is a new offense to a lot of the Falcons players. Also some people just assume that the NFC South will be bad in 2024 & assume the Falcons will win the South because of there showing in 2023 but the Falcons had a very easy schedule in 2023. The entire reason for signing Kirk Cousins was to win now & because of that they should have used their first pick for a starter who'll have an immediate impact but they instead drafted a guy that won't play for 3-4 years. Also they drafted a QB that is not as good as his numbers would have you believe & all you have to do to see this is go watch his play. Penix is not very accurate & threw to great all world receivers. Penix does not have good foot work nor does he go through his progressions well. Yes I heard the reports on him how he was so good but when I watched is play I was shocked & very unimpressed. Maybe 2-4 years on the bench as a backup will help him but the NFL isn't a spread option league. The unfortunate thing is no one will even know for years if Penix can improve enough to be a solid NFL QB & the Falcons better make there plans very clear so they don't start a QB controversy. We literally already have fans calling into talk shows fantasizing about Kirk Cousins getting hurt so Penix can play. There's a good chance this is going to turn into a clown show in Atlanta. Thank God for the Atlanta Braves & Alex Anthopoulos.

I actually thought that it was a good selection Kirk Cousins was injured last year and if he goes down Penix can get the starting nod if you want to develop a QB traditionally where he sits on the bench for a couple of seasons it makes a lot of sense Kurt Warner did not get his starting nod until he was 28 both QB from what I understood were not elite but Penix showed signs of progress why throw him into the fire if you are building depth and are into developing QBs choosing a QB and giving him a chance to learn is actually good given how they were drafting top 10 and only 30% of QBs do not bust when drafting in the first round

I just want to bud in this pick was actually good. There are 32 teams in the nfl yet 66 QBs started last season. Having a solid back up is just as important as a starter. In the falcons case there number 2 will be there number one in the future. The falcons offense is already stacked so it’s good on that front. People act like the falcons defense was just atrocious last year even though in truth they were in the top half of nfl teams last year. They just couldn’t get sacks which isn’t the only thing that makes a defense good. They even doubled down on defense with their next four draft picks so they did address the defense. Also to the ones who say they couldn’t stop offenses in key moment yeah you’re right they couldn’t because they were tired the offense was playing so poorly that the defense was always on the field. The reason was QB play they doubled down on that.

The Packers model works because the organization knows who to develop quarterbacks. They have a type of guy they like to target in the draft and they have a quarterback whisperer in Tom Clements. They don’t get over eager to get a future quarterback. They are willing to wait to get a young raw talent and let them learn over the course of years before thrusting them into the starting role. The Falcons don’t have a veteran quarterback who’s played for them before, don’t have a young drafted quarterback who makes sense to let sit for 2-3 years. I’m not sure they have a quarterback whisperer like Clements around to help either of their two guys. The move to get Penix seems to be more focused on the incoming Kirk suspension for tampering rather than anything else. Saying it was to follow what the Packers do is just the cover story.

We’re not going to have a top 10 pick for the next 2-3 years at least. So if we didn’t take one now, when would we have an opportunity to get a 1st round QB?? I admit, it was bold af. But if Kurt goes down, Terry F. Will be considered a genius!

Cousins is coming off a major injury and getting older as it is. So getting an insurance QB on a rookie contract is a smart idea. They can eat the end of cousin's contract and be okay with a QB on a cheap contract.

Yeah an elderly backup quarterback is the worst pick in the top 10 since Clelin Farrell. I do think he would have been a top 12 pick. But this team has the softest schedule in the league next year and they aren’t going for it. 2 times in my 30 years of fandom have things been so bad that my friends felt so bad that they didn’t make fun of me😂 28-3 and Penix. Also- I disagree the packers even made a good decision with Love. If the Packers got say, Tee Higgins- they may have actually won something.
