The attack of Fort Eben Emael Animated - German Special Operation

There is little doubt that the assault of Fort Eben Emael is one of the most impressive victories of the second world war. In the aftermath, 65 German paratroopers would have engaged and soundly defeated a Belgian force 10 times their size protected by the largest fort of its day. Assault force granite would sustain 6 dead and 20 wounded. A sharp contrast from the Belgians, that would sustain 60 KIA, and over a thousand soldiers captured.
The successful attack on Fort Eben Emael would permit the capture of the three bridges of the albert canal. Ushering in the invasion of Belgium, the allied retreat at Dunkirk and the capitulation of the French government.

I didn’t know they had the technology to see where they were going at night in those gliders. This was well-made.

Prior to the attack, the entire fort was recreated in cologne. Task force Granite, rehearsed for months, and knew the ins and outs of the objective. In terms of the actual actions on the objective, the german soldiers relied on effective communication and coordination to carry out their mission. They utilized radios, signal flares, and prearranged signals to maintain contact and synchronize their movements during the operation. Hope that answers your question. Cheers!

@@thefogofwarYT It reminds me on the game Cannon Fodder which also was beautiful animated. Beautiful explosion animation, maybe the flamethrower could be a bit better animated but the one time use dosent really matter. I first read about the Eben Emael commado operation in a book from Guderian "Mit den panzern in Ost und West" but sadly i don´t think theres an english version. Eben Email was very impressiv and there are two other stories i thought wtf which for sure been worth animating like this. One was an tank attack on an french battleship which was fully operational but still in harbour. The other story was about a small tank squad, as i remember it was 3 tanks and just 24 soldiers which captured 7000 french soldiers at an french supply line, for sure not all at once but over two or three days they always managed to make the french troops think they been trapped. There are more storys which sounds almsot funny like germans taking the belgish tram and even payed for transport to capture a bridge cause the train driver thought its british troops.

@@cleanTron Being a Belgian myself the story of the tram is believable. In a surrealistic country like Belgium thta's possible.

I am planning a visit to Belgium and France later this summer and my first stop leaving the Brussels Airport will be Fort Eban Emael. One thing I keep coming across in various videos is the claim that Evan Emael was "the largest fort in the World." Not so. Fort Mills, on the fortified island of Corregidor, along with 3 other fortified islands, was far larger and much more thoroughly armed. To be sure, the fortifications were designed around U.S. and Japanese war planning dating back to 1906. The forts were capable of fighting against WWI-Era "super dreadnoughts" and to withstand a one-year siege. Fort Mills had a total of 8 12" guns, 2 10" guns, 12 12" mortars, an array of 6" and 3" guns, a controlled minefield, searchlights, power plants, reservoirs, bombproof tunnels and a large anti-aircraft battery. The other forts were armed with 14" guns, 4 in open, "disappearing" mounts and 4 in turrets, installed on Fort Drum, "The Concrete Battleship", I have toured the sites and appreciate the challenges and ingenuity of the designers, as well as the brave forces who defended them until their surrender in May of 1942.

If only they put hedgehogs on top of the fort, it would prohibit them from landing.

This operation shows the high level of German soldier's training at the begin of WW II and the meaning of leading with mission ("Führen mit Auftrag", still today only practiced by German and Israeli troops, as far as I know). Though the absence of two groups, especially their platoon leader, they managed to fulfil their objectives and were capable to replace the missing platoon members. Even the enemy commanders paid respect to these efforts.

Why couldn't the German Stuka Ju-87 target bomb the Fort out of existence? Or even Ju-88's???
@thefogofwarYT
@thefogofwarYT 2 года назад
Hey Earl! First off, the fort was considered a vital strong point for both forces. Capturing the fort would give the Germans a significant tactical advantage in order to support the strategical plan that was at play (the quick invasion of Belgium). Only certain military elements can gain and hold ground (mainly the infantry). Second, Fort Eben Emael truly was the most fortified fortress of its time (made to survive constant bombardment). I'm not sure that destroying the fort would have been possible. Cheers!

Just the perfect combination of luck, good planning, and excellent execution. History is replete with instances where daring operations resulted in catastrophic outcomes. The raid on St. Nazaire in France serves as a prime example of such endeavors. While it can be deemed successful in achieving its objective, the operation came at an exceptionally high price (most were killed or captured during the mission). The attack on Fort Eben-Emael, on the other hand, stands as an exception to this pattern.
