I think an S1 standalone vid would be better than trying to cover all models using a modified S1 as the basis. On the S1 the biggest issues are the weak stock clutch & coolant leaks from the thermostat housing. Standard 312mm brakes are weak- especially for modified cars. Standard gearshift throw is excessive & somewhat vague Gearbox dogbone mount allows too much transmission shunt
Good idea highlighting problems. Gives people a balanced view instead of influencers who are quite possibly wined and dined by Audi......etc etc before they give a review.
This is the car off Officially Gassed. Only a mad man would spend that much for what's been done to this car, definitely had his pants down if it's true. I miss my old S1 but there's a lot of things you can have at that money now and my MK3 Megane RS scratches most of the itch for half the price.
@@ScottishCarClan yeah i can well imagine there wouldn't be much change out've £10k getting it to that power but 70k is a push even including the car. It must be a task changing gears at the rate it goes through them! I've been in a 550hp Golf R and that nearly put me in the boot so I can imagine this is similar.
@@W00LFY100 I believe the current owner has all the receipts for the work done so we’ll do a proper add up in the next video. Yes 😅 it’s barely worth taking your hand away from the gear stick
Hi great vid, I'm thinking of getting an a1 s1 on a 14 plate, just wondering what the 1.2 is like n what to watch for its done 60k with full service every 10k,would much appreciate your input before I buy, thank a lot, keep up the good work.
Hey! Thanks for watching. Check the wheel arches for corrosion, use that as a negotiation point. Check all the steering wheel electrics work including the horn and finally check the power steering works correctly and the pump isn’t too noisy when operating. Best of luck 👍🏼
Best Mods for 2013, SLine Black Edition 2lt diesel. Had stage 1 map. Black Diamond disc's And Pads. Car has the big disc's Fitted as standard. Short shifter kit good mod. Wheel spacers 20mm OK.? 18 inch rotor wheels fitted as standard. Thanks Darryl Tucker.
Hey guys, what do you think, I commute from Dunfermline to Edinburgh daily. Should I get an S1 or a black edition 1.4 140/150 bhp and treat it to stage 1 and some springs?
Hi there. Have a chance of buying either a 1.6 diesel A1 2013 or 2012 1.4 semi auto A1. Both cars have only done 35k. Both seem ok. My mileage is only about 11k per year. Which one would you think would be best for me and what should I be looking out for in terms of potential problems! Thanks guys. Just subscribed. Great vids and extremely informative.
Hey! Thanks for the subscribe. Both great engines. If your journeys are a little longer you’ll get some savings from the diesel. If shorter trips are more common then the petrol would be the better bet. Main thing to look out for on both of these is the gearbox doesn’t judder when going from first to second gear or when taking away from slower speeds with second gear selected. They both use dry clutches which have been known to give problems. Manuals are hard to go wrong with but if your heart is set on auto then just make sure there’s no judder. Good luck!
@@ScottishCarClan For sure. Bad wheel bearing in the front right. Some minor coolant leak (can't even find out where). Driver seat heating stopped working (the one under my bum). Malfunctioning cooler fan (has integrated electronics). Some minor battery-related key issue. Squeaky glove compartment lid (difficult to fix/find) but not "dropping down" as you say in the video, never once. Now just recently I've started getting trouble shifting to 2:nd gear and I pray to God that it won't get much worse. That's about it. Otherwise change of brakes, oil, plugs, the usual stuff. It's a thirsty car.
Fair play gents that was cracking, well presented there too! Im weighing up an S1 but obviously not being a cheap car il be forking out best part of 13/14k for one, the clutch issues is a sticking point for me - how "weak" or prone to going are they? i dont fancy spending that sort of money on a car and then having to chuck a load more money at it because of a failed clutch. What are they engines like on the 1.4tfsi? do they hold up other than the turbos prone to failing? Last but not least, where did that short shifting gearbox addition come from? looks fecking tremendous!
Hey! Sorry for the late response, Very late response that is 😬. Clutches are fine! Fairly normal wear for a car of this type. You can judge it by how high the bite is on the pedal. Too high a biting point = replacement needed soon. 1.4tfsi’s are great too. Unlike the newer generation of 1.4’s you’ll find in the likes of the b9 a4’s etc. it’s a timing chain rather than belt which saves on maintenance. Finally the shirt shifter is from CAE. It’s called the ultra shifter… and yes. It is tremendous!
thought that car had an airtec intercooler but it looks like it still has the crash bar, am I seeing this wrong or has someone changed the intercooler?
I'm an S1 owner and to me it looks like the crash bar rather than the stage 2/3 larger intercoolers that replace the crash bar. There is no way at that power it doesn't have the intercooler changed. You also get uprated Intercoolers that are larger and sit under the crash bar often black so it could have one of them that's what I have. They are more for stage 1/2. So seems odd for an S1 with that power. There is a geeky answer for you ☺️
On some yes, some no. Those that remained with dry clutches still suffer the same fate unfortunately. Let me know if you want to check which clutch any specific engine uses.
