The Austin Allegro | Cars From Another Decade #2
In this video, the second in the series "Cars from another decade" we look at the Austin Allegro launched in the UK in 1973. The Allegro has been a target of criticism almost from launch with its "square" steering wheel (which isn't square) and rear glass that would pop out when the car was raised on jacks. We discuss the Allegro; the successor to the much loved Austin 1100 & 1300 and separate the myths from the facts.
Our sincere thanks to Rick for his time and to Agatha who added many miles to her clock during filming.

The Allegro was a much maligned car in the past but now has a growing cult following. I love the colour, it's very true to to its era. Great to see this Allegro saved and cherished! Regards from Australia.

I’m contemporary to yourselves, around the same age and for many years I played with lots of British tin, so being in the Antipodes, people like us were considered a bit quirky. I’ve had Austins, played with MG’s, Healeys, Wolseleys, Rileys and the like, owned a few Jaguars and Daimlers. Now, after owning a Mercedes-Benz 190E, I discovered that little car grabbed my heart and ran away with it. I sold it, as I did my Jaguars. My Daimler left late 2020. I was without a toy. I realised something was missing, and now, awaiting a spanner being turned on it, is a 1989 Mercedes-Benz C124 300CE. The Allegro though, has always fascinated me. If I had my way, I’d fly to the UK and hunt down a nice VDP version, as I always liked those with their very unusual nose…plus, my Daimler was a Double-Six Vanden Plas from the same era. Enjoyed your vlog. That little car is sweet, well done. Liked and subscribed…

I too am thought quirky which is fine as I don’t tend to follow others if I don’t want to. You have owned some wonderful motors and the classic Mercedes interesting. The Allegro is still disliked by many but others, including myself, like them. Thanks for watching and your comment.

Apart from the pleasant conversation, what I like most about this video, is that we do hear the engine and transmission sound in full swing instead of shitty music :-)

Well, that takes me back to being about five or six years old. My dad acquired an Allegro in the same colour, with the same brown vinyl and velour interior. If my fuzzy childhood memory is correct it was 'S' reg as well, but not in nearly as nice a condition so I'd think it was hovering around the banger category. Great to see one of these again and I don't think they deserved the flak they got!

First time watching your channel Paul, great vid, I’m a follower of Ricks channel and a big fan of the Allegro. I’d definitely agree with old vehicles that seem to protest that your trying to save them and prolong their life , I have a 1979 Suzuki 50 and it seems everything I’ve done on it has been a fight, but it’s getting better.

I think they were banned from the mersey tunnel for a few months after launch as they were built without towing bracket. These were welded to the front chassis rail beside the tie bar bracket after a couple of months of production. I've owned an Allegro since 1994 and remember being told this by someone at Gaydon.

Interesting video of a much maligned car. The 1750 Sport & the luxury 1750 Sport Special were originally single carburettor with 76 bhp but in September 1974 the 1750HL and 1750 Sport were launched with twin carburettors and 90 bhp available making the cars far more enjoyable to drive in a spirited manner.

For a car that was predominantly made right hand drive, the windscreen wipers go the wrong way. You drive on a rainy day. Is the diver's view clear or do you have to cope with wet edges?

Good video. 👍 You missed the myth that the Allegro was more aerodynamic going backwards than forwards haha! Your right about these classics appealing more to the yonger generations, like me for example (I'm in my late teens). I think a simple reason would be because the Allegro, Austin Princess, triumph tr7 are completely different cars when compared to modern cars. Also, the 1750ss stand for Sport special not super sport, not that anyone cares lol (just pointless information) 😂.
