In memory. Casey loved The Avett Brothers. I discovered them because of him. Casey Bokhoven November 22, 1980 - March 11, 2007⭐ Killed by a drunk driver Winston-Salem, North Carolina 💔 Tonight Doesn't Have to Be The Last Show
This song pushed me to follow my heart. I was trapped in a rut, working 60 hours a week for what felt like pennies, and completely a lone in a small town. I knew something needed to change when I started having suicidal thoughts and the same dream EVERY night of being chased without being able to lift my legs. With motivation from family, friends and this song I uprooted myself and moved to my dream location with a couple of bucks in my pocket and no plan. It was a struggle but 4 years later I am now happily married with a little one on the way and the job of my dreams. Don't second guess your heart, 'decide what to be and go be it'.
Keaton Wanninger thank you for sharing...I needed to read that..I’m in a very dark space my ptsd is eating me alive and not sure how much longer I can hang on..
Reach out, there are people who care & want to help you. Google “ptsd resources” in your area. Don’t give in to it! Even if you think you’re alone I guarantee you matter very much to somebody. Hold on!!!
Anthony Smith, there has to be a reason I randomly saw your comment here, hrs after you posted it. It’s proof that you matter, even to a stranger on the Internet. Please get help.
@@smitty6132 It can get better, and its not as painful of a path as you think. Please look up Jordan Peterson and watch his videos. Its helped many with PTSD and its helped me as well. Please hang on, its worth it I promise
Hi It's a beautiful & heart touching song❤❤Hello from Scotland!. How are you doing today? I guess you have a great passion for music just like I do? I hope to hear from you soon!!! One thing about music is that when you're sad you listen to the lyrics, when you happy you dance to the beat!
Years ago I was walking through Bonnaroo being a person leading others to despair.. I heard these words and fell to my knees weeping. I am a better man today because of these men
First time I heard this song, it instantly moved me to tears. I listened to it over and over for an hour and somehow it triggered an emotion of guilt I felt about something from over 20 years ago. It helped me realize I was over due to forgive myself. Finding this kind of peace was life changing. This song will forever be a part of my soul. TY Avett Bros.
What amazes me is why music like this isn't on the radio. We are fed music that just has no lasting value. Music like this sticks with you and makes you feel. Heard this song in a Hope For Paws video and had to come check out their music. As an earlier comment said... These guys make the world a better place
@@artmartello I agree in a sense. I actually don’t listen to the radio I stream. However I was more or less talking about generally speaking music like this is not played over the air. However you are correct and I have since added this to my streaming!
@@windmasterfluke I have a show every Sunday at 2pm called The Catskills Cafe at 2 pm est on wiox radio.org. I also have a podcast named Mostly Folk it’s more than 4000 listeners a month. This kind of music is what I play
@@artmartello So I listened to your latest podcast and it's a pretty awesome show. of course you hooked me on another song just as good as this one wild fire by the accidentals. Thanks for the heads up and the great music
This song inspired me when I was in engineering school. I was going through some dark times and I really struggled to believe in myself and that I could actually be successful. After an abysmal start in the first two semesters mainly bc of a breakup of a seven year relationship, I made a promise to myself in the next year and made stellar grades like I never have before. I put in the work and started to believe in myself and it all worked out in the end. I’m now 7 years into my career and was recently promoted into a senior reliability engineer position. I’m so glad I didn’t give up on myself after all the struggles I had bc it reaped such awesome fruits in my life. Thank you to the Avett Brothers for your awesome music that inspires others to not give up on their dreams. Peace to anyone who reads this!
Respect, glad to see the power of this song helped you take back the power of your life. Congrats on the recovery without challengers there can never be growth. So its inspiring to hear how you chose to apply yourself. . Peace
Congratulations on your successes! I attained my masters in criminology. I attribute 100% of my success in my last year in school to this album. Sometimes things do work out. Glad to hear you are out of your dark place and into the light!
There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right And it comes in black and it comes in white And I'm frightened by those that don't see it When nothing is owed or deserved or expected And your life doesn't change by the man that's elected If you're loved by someone, you're never rejected Decide what to be and go be it There was a dream and one day I could see it Like a bird in a cage I broke in And demanded that somebody free it And there was a kid with a head full of doubt So I'll scream 'til I die And the last of those bad thoughts are finally out There's a darkness upon you that's flooded in light And in the fine print They tell you what's wrong and what's right And it flies by day and it flies by night And I'm frightened by those who don't see it ★
i’ll never forget when i saw them in concert, when seth sang “and your life doesn’t change by the man that’s elected” he put his hands up in prayer. i still think about it whenever i listen to this masterpiece
SuzN with all do respect, i think there’s a lot of worse things they could have done to us fans. that doesn’t change my perspective on them at all. i appreciate your input, though.
groovin’ van fleet that lyric only holds truth for the privileged. It is true- no matter the political outcome, life remains as IS for those who do not suffer from oppression.
" If you're loved by someone you're never rejected..." These lyrics speak to my soul. I knew the first time I heard those words that I will always be a fan of these guys. It helped me look at life a little different. Thank you Avett Bros. Your shows are amazing. I was lucky enough to the their father come on stage and play some gospel. What an encore. God bless them.
I've been a huge Avett Brothers fan for 15 years or so. I've seen them live more times than I can remember. This song always, without exception, makes me cry. A bittersweet cry - happiness and sadness meet in the most beautiful way. I've been a banjo player/singer for 20 years and this is still my favorite song to cover. I absolutely love this track with every ounce of my being.
This video is probably the greatest music video ever, and the most haunting song I have ever heard, because of the honesty of how we are as a society ❤💜.
i first heard this song when i was really young. it was an exhibit at a local art museum, and i sat there for ages just watching and watching it play. i forgot the name of it soon after, and for years it would be in my head, and i'd remember the song with the good lyrics and awesome animation. still, i could never find it. an in-depth search of the internet has finally allowed me to rediscover this song, and i'm so glad i did. absolutely love this song.
Decided I wanted to go back loving to read books. Started with Colleen Hoover and her book is dedicated to you. I got curious and now I know why. Your songs are powerful.
@@JA-zd4rz Right ? When pressed to express a "favorite" Avett Brothers song, I reply that ... "I have 5 children and could no more choose a favourite among them as choose a favourite Avett Brothers song."
Happy Birthday to the Hardest Marine ever Gabriel Gerald , from surviving the dead , no easy hope . One of the best books I ever listened from audio book and still going .
Decide what to be and go be it. When you really understand that, truly and deeply understand, the universe is completely at your fingertips. Much love.
I am frightened because I refuse to think they don't see it; they just act like they don't. Or that there is a gray area. There should be a word that describes what their voices are. That means warmth and wisdom, and home and peace, all wrapped up together in one word. Well, I guess there is LOVE. I have been listening on repeat, no reason to stop now...
Heard this back in 09 me and my lads then 9 and 11 played this on repeat for ages singing our arses off for the longest time now in 2024 my youngest now 22 just asked if i remembered this. How could i ever forget this absolutely gorgeous song and the memory of me and my boys singing along. Liked and an easy sub cheers.
This is the first and most important song I ever shared with my wife 6 years ago. We’re married now for 5 years, the song is still is the most important for us, despite the ups and downs that life throw you. Thank you Avett brothers for this life defining song.
Avett wisdom is as sharp as double edge sword to the beast that mocks and wants destruction of man. A burning torch for the weary and broken and a shield from the whispers of night. God bless em both.
I have listened to this a few times but have never felt it so fervently until right now .I hope all you beautiful people do exactly you without a doubt. Much love to all with ears for this.
So happy for you and nothing but the best. Please share this journey you have been on, u will save many god bless you, I do wish I had found that 1 person
This song soundtracked a poignant moment in my life- a hot, crowded train car at 2a home after a day in the city, in China, where I lived as the lone foreigner. Everyone else was asleep and I listened to this song as I looked out the dark window, and I knew I was where I should be.
Tennessee is such a special place❤My Dad was born in WV,My Mom was born in NJ.Their gone now,My family pretty much has gone on their own ways,🙏❤️✝️ Tennesse ❤️ has always been special to me,🙏✝️🥰 I think that It's meant in my Soul & Heart God Bless Tennessee, People Are So Friendly!🙏
One of my favorite songs. I’m a teenaged girl mainly listening to pop but these kind of songs still mean the most to me. They touch my soul like 99% of pop songs will never do.
Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good. That honor, courage and virtue mean everything; that power and money . . . money and power mean nothing. That good always triumphs over evil. And I want you to remember this, that love - true love never dies. Remember that boy . . . remember that. Doesn’t matter if it is true or not, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in.
Coronavirus has given me a head full of doubt. I'm sorry for the darkness upon our world. My dream is that one day we see this world heals, not just of this, but all of the atrocities that lie upon it.
video enhances song for me. "I'm frightened by those who don't see it" I've seen The Avett Brothers 4 times, and I will keep going to their concerts until the shows are done, which I hope is never! I just love these guys.
Bulletin board stops producing shadows after the first day. Seems like if you go through the trouble of having a shadow when we first see it, you'd always want it there as time progresses and days turn to nights, etc. All the same the video is really beautiful.
me, my parents, my aunt's and uncles and cousins and family friends all around a table playing cards with this song and many of their others is the perfect way that we spend our weekends. God bless the avett brothers for bringing my family close with their heart moving lyrics and songs ❤
These lyrics to this song are just magnificent. Along with "I and Love and You," this song was something of an anthem to the time of my life after college - from 2008 to 2011.
This us truly one of my favorite songs. I'm 4 months shy of hitting the big 50 soon. A half a century. Listening to music my whole life and all the great classics, but nowadays thing's have changed and not for the better. This song helps me get through and to always stand strong in my beliefs. As a proud southern born traditional conservative American I'd be blind, deaf, and dumb not to see that "There is a darkness upon us all (Government corruption) that's flooded in light (freedom) In thr fine print they (liberal media/fake news) tell us what's wrong and whats right. It comes in black and iit comes in white and I'm frightened by those who don't see it. Where (America) nothing is Owed, Deserved, or Expected. And our lives will not change by the man that's elected (All politicians) If you're loved by someone you're never rejected. Decide what to be and go be it. 😊
This song always reminds me of my mom she loves this song she even framed some of the lyrics and hung it up Btw she’s not dead but I only see her every other week
I love going on bike rides with my kids and this song is how i feel on the bike paths. They are soo peaceful and quiet and the trees and nature drowned out the histle of city life. Back to the basics in a sort. Like when the town falls apart back to nature. I love it!
I remember hearing this song for the first time years ago by chance. Having no idea of who the Avett Brothers were. I'd never heard such a moving song full of inspiration. I'm so glad to see this song has helped so many people in the comment section.
My parents and their close friends are all big fans of the avett brothers, so naturally I would always hear this song for the past 3 years when coming over, and although ive never shown it, I liked the song very much but i always told them "its eh. I like my music much better" (fall out boy, imagine dragons, etc.) Recently, a close family friend, who whenever i went to her house, would hear this song, got diagnosed with cancer. So I ecided to listen to the avett brothers, because it reminds me of her, since ive known her my entire life. This is my first time watching this video and I must say, this is a work of art. Its a shame only 1 million people have decided or stumbled upon it.
There is no more important message than the one contained in this song and every human that has ever lived has the potential to understand it if they just look.

"And there was a kid, with a head full of doubt, So i scream til i die so the last of those bad thoughts are finally out" That helps my inner child to focus on good things in life. I must fight everyday to get my training right. I have Borderline personality disorder and that song really helps to get away the wrong thoughts 🙏🏻
A really good song, and one with a message. You shouldn't expect too much too soon, as you'll likely set yourself up for disappointment. Instead, allow life to throw some curveballs. You can never be too sure these days; in some situations, it is better to be unsure than cocksure. 4:21

I saw this painting animation at an Art museum in North Carolina. I heard this song while sitting on this little couch by this big projected screen. I'm glad I found it again.
Been a fan for years and am finally learning the back story of this video, and watching it for the first time. Thanks to Avett Brothers archivist (shout out to Tim M.),for including the interview with the very talented and special Jason Mitcham, in his Avett Bros Archive fanzine Long Story Short ...Vol 1. This is amazing work all around
When I first got this video on iTunes a few years ago, I've been in love with their sound and how perfect and melodic they are. One of my favorite videos of all time. :)
There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light, and the fine friends that tell me what's wrong and what's right. There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light, and I'm frightened by those who don't see it.
10 years working for the state. 10 years at 16.09 as an electrician FOD........ One day I told my father who'd retired from the state after 34 years, I can't do this anymore I believe. Instead of telling me to stick it out he told me to talk to a best friend of his at a company. 7 years later now I'm a commercial industrial electrician for a hospital making 31.04 and some of the best friends I could ever ask for. We fish and hunt and hang out after work all the time. All it takes is one frustrated moment to vent to someone, and it can change your life for the better.
I’m here because I’m reading slammed by Colleen Hoover and she said the book was dedicated to this band because of this song. So here I am listening to it.
My mom has this song on tape and we used to listen to it while driving our old rv. I forgot the name and had to look it up again and I'm so glad I found it
