The Awards Table - video for my daughters, explaining my military awards - Veteran's Day 2023

[Edit: Due to the comments section, I found out I was wearing something that wasn't authorized. This was due to misinterpreting the criteria for the Arrowhead Device. Though I was on the first wave of the 82nd Airborne onto Grenada, I did not conduct a parachute insertion. So, I have removed the Arrowhead Device from my medal. On a side note, this discussion was one that didn't resort to silly name calling and was just stating facts, thanks to the Ranger that pointed it out to me]
This video is meant for my daughters, and any children they might have. I made it because there are medals that I know my dad was awarded, but I don't know why. So, I decided to make a video explaining why I got the awards and what they are.

I was a support guy (MI). I was with 5th Group 1986-1998 (Ft Bragg), and then made the mass exodus to Ft Campbell in 1998. During the time I was at Ft Bragg, I was in the MI Company, and was part of 3d Bn support - I deployed with 3d Bn. I was in 5th Group at Ft Campbell 1988 to 1997, primarily in 2d Bn. 1994 to 1997 I was at the Group MI Det. After some other assignments, I was selected for the Sergeants Major Academy at Ft Bliss 2004-2005. When I graduated, I signed a dec statement and pulled my name from selection to E9. I pulled some strings and returned to 5th Group. The best part was that I was assigned back "home" to 2d Bn. Serving the SF guys was something I was proud to do.

@@gamm8939 Post your video then bigmouth! Why even say anything... That shadow box shows more service than 99% of the rest of the country... IF you served at all and IF you might have a more robust rack... then why say anything, why not recognize the service and the video for what it is.. a reference for the Sergeant's lineage to use to "know what the stuff in the box means". I gotta say, I know a small handful of SF guys and a few Marines.. guys that bled and sacrificed in Desert Storm and various parts of GWOT. I don't know one of them that would try to shit all over another Vet's video like this... if you are a Vet you should be ashamed. Jesus Christ man, *SMH*... this dude is a tabbed Ranger, served with the 82nd, and was a 5th SFG Green Beret.. then add the 1 Bronze Star he received and the other Bronze star that got morphed into an ARCOM with V ... I'd say he walked the walk... Then the last thing I will say to shit all over your shitty comment... if you look at his time in service.... He was awarded in 1983 in Grenada as a Sgt.!!! that puts him as an E7 in Desert Storm... where he was again awarded multiple times for valor and heroism... he had 18yrs in .. Do the math, and the prime of his "ribbon getting" years.... was PEACE with nothing happening. Best thing you could do is erase your comment and stop trolling. Shame.

Since this video went semi-viral, I've had several post comments that this should have been some sort of private video that I gave to my daughters on a thumb drive or some such. But thumb drives get lost, broken. Actually, thumb drives are about as current as a VHS recorder with young folks, no one under the age of 30 uses them much. Everything is streaming, and online. Well, the internet is forever and it won't get lost or broken. I also wished my father had made a video like this, explaining his awards, instead of me just guessing what they were for.

Hi Patrick, very cool idea for your video, one day I'll do a similar one for my kids. As far as your dad's awards, you can submit a Freedom Of Information Act, or FOIA, request to the government- I would specifically mention in your request that you are looking for any original award documents and/or citations. Many if not all of the individual awards your father received should have one of these documents that was written when he was recommended for the award, and these explicitly state the time, place, and actions the award is bestowed for. Best of luck!
@Irish_Pirate
@Irish_Pirate 7 месяцев назад
I have the documents, but they don't really tell the story. For example my Bronze Star has the vague "for exceptional meritorious service" that was put on every single Bronze Star to the men of 5th Special Forces Group. However, the actual reason for getting the medal has more details. The write-up for the awards usually get lost or thrown out by many units.
@madtvboy

@@Irish_Pirate Didn’t realize you were also former 3/75, I served in 1/75 myself, always nice to see other Batt boys. I’m not sure when, but much of the historical award documents, even from units, have been digitally archived. Units can’t shred or actually get rid of personnel awards files, although I’m sure some have been lost. The actual DA-638 is what will have the narrative on it. I’m a vet and a historian, I’d be happy to take a look at anything you have from your fathers period of service. It’s amazing how much historical and military documentation and unit history has been digitized and is available on various databases
