Fascinating but likely to be expensive! As it happens, having used your custom profile on the cotton rag paper with pretty close results to what I see on screen, I have started to use the Platinum Baryta with the downloadable icc profiles (I rushed in) on colour and monochrome images, though on a Canon Pro 10S and they are, to my eyes, absolutely spot on. Now my favourite paper.

My dilemma of Epson vs Canon got resolved today by virtue of Canon Pro-100/200/300 being far more serviceable in terms of printing head replacement. Epson printing head can not be replaced rendering this excellent device to a trash heap. Canon on the other hand offers that replacement part for around 100USD. Bingo.

Thank you for the feedback, we will pass this on to Epson.

only hitch is that the canon printers dont have a waste ink container, they use pads instead yes the 100-200 and 300...sorry, Epson has a waste ink container.. either will be rude as hell when they come to "end of service"

I have these 2 printers in mind for my first printer. It will be for my astrophotography initially so blacks very important in most of my images. Down the line I will be doing more widefield milky way shots and general landscape photography. It’s a hard choice!

Thanks, you’ve confirmed that I need to focus on the blackness of the black & white printing. I expect I’ll be purchasing one of these in the next year and moving away from dye inks for B&W.

Not surprised the Reviewer choose the Epson. They showed their bias (however slight) towards Epson by their own comments and repeated utterings about 'new technology head' and 'carbon black' long before the prints were discussed! I for one (and most skilled printers I know) always use the specific B&W modes in printers and not profiles for the very well demonstrated reasons in this video. Other reviews have clearly preferred the Canon for B&W and yet more reviews have shown the 'carbon black' to be a marketing gimmick by Epson. However what potential buyers needs to note (and especially if tending towards fine art papers) is that there are numerous reports of the Epson 'pizza wheels' (used for moving the paper through the printer) marking paper surfaces and damaging prints. Epson are aware of this. I am not biased towards Canon (I have a dead Imageprograf 1000 sat next to me) and swore I would never buy Canon again! However the two Epsons (the P700 and P900) seem to have many issues. This leaves a dilemma for me as I may have to buy a Canon again :( . Perhaps if Canon creates a printer that is like the Imageprograf 1000 but does not drink ink as a hobby I may buy it. That printer is not here yet. Meanwhile Epson have moved part way forward but introduced new issues while trying to shed the 'blocked nozzle' epidemic. Whether the new print head suffers from blocked nozzles is not yet clear .... the jury is out.

Thank you for your comments, the Canon's are great printers and the Pro1000 is what I use to print all our swatches on here at Fotospeed. I found leaving the Pro1000 on all the time stops some of the ink wastage, these printers like to be used otherwise they do do an auto clean ever 72 hours. I haven't seen any blocked nozzles yet on the Epson or the pizza marks that was a problem on the previous models. Like I said in the video i have been really impressed with both printers and both are some similar in print quality to the naked eye. No one would be disappointed with either printer. Tim

Print with titanium white ink on black carbon paper. You may think I’m mad, but you won’t know until you’ve tried it.

Hello, (sorry for my english, I'm french^^) I just changed my printer. I took the sc P700 which replaces my old r2000.. But I'm disappointed on one point, it's the obligation to have a margin when you put the quality from level 4...(1 to 5). With the R2000, I didn't have this problem, whether level 1 or 5, the photo was printed in full page (without margin or border). With the sc p700, I have no choice.. Moreover, at equal quality: when I go to quality level 3 on the Epson R2000, as well as level 3 on the sc p700, the photo is sharper (better definition) on the R2000 than on the sc p700.. Is there something to do that I did wrong? Thank you

I've found that I don't need the ABW on my p900. I started with it, but realized that I get slightly better results from my custom profile. I use an i1Pro spectro and 2371 patches in i1Profiler. There's linearization curves needed afterwards either way, so being able to do color or b&w with the same profile is more convenient. Also matters what resolution to print at. Anything higher than 1440x1440 prints too dark and crushes the blacks while getting only slightly higher dmax and it's not worth it.

Hi David, Thank you for your comments.

It would surprise no one that a i1Pro $2500 Spectro custom profile might be (marginally) better than the ABW mode on a $1000 printer?
@davidromano2421
@davidromano2421 2 года назад
@@AnOpticalView I don't know, good equipment doesn't necessarily translate into good results. I can't say I compared every aspect of the print results, and some amount linearization is still needed with both methods anyway. But I'm really impressed with neutrality over the whole tonal range, and it's convenient to always use the same printing method whether it's color or b&w. If I didn't have the spectro, I'd use the ABW mode for sure.
@jeg569

Would you then recommend using the Epson ADV mode rather than Fotospeed custom profiles that were done for me? There were effectively profiled twice for B&W.
@FotospeedUK
@FotospeedUK 3 года назад
Up until I did this video I would have and have told everyone to use a custom profile. That was one of the reason I wanted to do this video to test the theory. I have to say though that the ADV one gives a more neutral print and I have been proved wrong. However saying that I did go to the extremes in this video and the naked eye would be pushed to see the difference.
@jeg569
@jeg569 3 года назад
@@FotospeedUK on the Epson P700 there is only colour or Adv B&W, did you let the printer driver manage the profile? Otherwise you are still choosing a custom ICC profile.

Yea the AMC PrintHead on the Epson produces a very accurate 1.5 pl drop. It's the basis of Piezo Technology. Canon uses a thermal head and subject ink dispersion. You have to look hard but I agree the Epson is smoother. Carbon Black is also genius technology especially on glossy papers. Thanks for the video.

Most reviews detail that the Canon Chroma optimizer produces smoother and superior gloss prints and this seems unanimous? I guess the carbon black is better than previous Epson ink?

Shouldn't it make a big diff for B/W printing that the Epson has an extra grey color vs the Canon?

The ease of maintenance and removeable head does it for me, I had to throw my Epson R1800 in the bin after a head strike on heavy canvas and couldn't repair it so it's canon all the way for me, I have three now and plan to get the Prograf 1000 or the Pro 2100. Most of my cameras have been from the canon line up both film and digital so I guess I'm a bit of a fanboy.

The Canon print head can be replaced easy, not with the Epson. The Epsom is more expensive on ink, because it use's more to get the "extras" that you cant really see. If you are a pro photographer or semi pro, the cartridge size on the Canon makes more sense, unless you're printing commercially, where the bigger pots are more desirable. The Build quality of the Canon is superior to the epson, and the Epson has feed issues, going by the forums. That said both machines will give you excellent results, and you got to decided which works best for you. IMHO, the Canon Pro300 is a better machine for most people, most of the time,

I understand that the new technology is on the bigger printers from epson like the p7570 not in the small “inexpensive” ones like the p900 and p700
@FotospeedUK
@FotospeedUK 3 года назад
There is a new head on the P700 and P900. I understand from Epson that this is due to the extra nozzles for the Violet ink and the extra black channel so no more switching between black inks. The larger printer have had an upgrade as well. Tim

Carbon Black is Black Enhanced Overcoat technology which is similar to P7570 and P9570, so yes it's similar technology but with different marketing names.

@@FotospeedUK Note the 'larger' printer (the P900) had a 'downgrade' in ink volume from 80ml to 50ml per cartridge.

The Canon Pro300 does not have a user replaceable waste ink container, something to take into consideration when you print alot, because dismantling the printer to clean the waste ink pads underneath the printer bottom is not for the faint hearted.

In Canon you can change the head yourself for $100 and continue printing, in Epson the printer is thrown away. Also, the quality of the plastic is much better in the Canon, Epson and the gloss on the top is a disaster.

Ain’t that the same problem with most large format printers? On the other hand, you can find refillable cartridges and ink, or even cheaper “home brand cartridges” for the Epson P700 if that’s a solution. Concerning quality I can’t say a word, haven’t tested neither of those “cheaper” solutions. Haven’t seen these for the Canon 300 so far.
