In this first episode I tackle The Badger Divide, a 320km off-road cycling route from Inverness to Glasgow. The route takes in parts of the Great Glen Way and West Highland Way and traverses past some amazing Scottish Scenery including Loch Ness, Corrieyairack Pass, Loch Laggan, Loch Ossian, Corrour Train Station, Loch Rannoch, Glen Lyon, Glen Lochay, Glen Ogle, Loch Earn, Glen Ample, Loch Venachar and Loch Ard Forest.
My adventure was over four days:
Day 1: Inverness to Blackburn Bothy - 74km (1270 metres ascent)
Day 2: Blackburn Bothy to Loch Ossian YHA - 69km (1070 metres ascent)
Day 3: Loch Ossian YHA to Loch Drunkie - 128km (1820 metres ascent)
Day 4: Loch Drunkie to Glasgow - 56km (610 metres ascent)

Brilliant and great coverage of the badger, something I really needed to see which has helped me decide on going via the badger instead of going down to Oban and over to Ayr for the full End2End (Downhill). Thanks for showing!

Hi Iain, the tyres are Schwalbe G-One AllRound Performance DD RaceGuard 2.25 inch (I am running 650b wheels). I have them set up as tubeless and they have been flawless. I appreciated the bigger tyres for comfort on my 3T bike...

What time did you get into Inverness? Might you have been able to push over Corrieyairack Pass and into Laggan if you had more time?
@go_explore
@go_explore Год назад
I did not start cycling until well after lunch and the sun was going down as I passed through Fort Augustus. There would have definitely been no issue getting over the pass if I had set off earlier. I was quite happy to make it to the bothy as it saved me the effort of getting all the camping gear out but I think if I did the route again I think I would have a longer first day and shorter third day. Lots of options and the good thing about carrying a tent is that you can make decisions as you go :)

Hi and thanks for watching my video on the Badger Divide. Nowadays I use Adobe After Effects and Geolayers 3 but for this video I used a free Android App called Stuneo. When I looked on the play store it was no longer there and a quick Google confirmed it had been removed due to lack of support and investment. Other free options are Google Earth Studio and Relieve.. Cheers :)

@@go_explore - different to the CL. The weather was super cold, below freezing most the time but dry -- though the small sandy track across the beach at Loch a na Earba was underwater which threw me - committed to it with a "must not fall off" mantra! Noone has done a Winter (Dec/Jan/Feb/Mar) CL yet and you would need more winter experience than me. Badger is almost all rideable, perfect as long as there is not snow on the passes and I got to various tea shops before they closed for the winter at Corrour, Lyon and Lubnaig. Any plans for '23?... 2nd City Divide, An Turas Mor, Dales Divide... all sound good options
@go_explore
@go_explore Год назад
@@fatbikefarm Sounds like you had an epic adventure - great effort. 2nd City Divide is high on my list of adventures and I will be doing lots of self-procured weekend adventures as well hopefully. I am hoping to do the Loch Ness 360 over the coming weeks as this seems an achievable ride in the winter :)

Hi James, Thanks for commenting on my video. I can guarantee you will have a great time. It is an epic route. My bag setup is a combination of Tailfin and Apidura gear. I used the Talifin Aero Pack with two Cargo Cages and 5L Cage Packs. I stored the tent, spare clothes, food, stove, drone etc. in these. On the handlebars I used a Apidura Expedition Handlebar Pack where I stored my sleeping bag and mattress. I also had the Apidura Expedition Accessory Pocket attached to this and I kept things I wanted access to quickly like snacks, a rain jacket. I had a top tube bag and a small frame bag that had stuff like camera equipment and more food. Tools were stored in another cage page mounted under the down tube. I have tried lots of different setups but the Tailfin is the best in my opinion. Lots of capacity and does not move at all when you are riding. Hope that helps and enjoy the Badger :)

great vid, i was planning on riding this on April May time. I have a cross bike or 29er. I was thinking of the 29er for the rough bits any thoughts..?
@go_explore
@go_explore Год назад
Thanks for commenting on my Badger Divide Video. Firstly, it is an epic route and you will have an amazing adventure. Either bike will work and compared to some routes (eg. One of my other videos - Cairngorms Loop) it is pretty much rideable all the way. The decent down Corrieyairack Pass is a little rough but I had no issues on my Gravel Bike. I did have wide 2.5 inch tyres though. The cross bike will work fine but the 29er will give you the extra comfort at the expense of a little speed on the flat sections. Either will work. Enjoy!

Great video! You seem to have really lucked out with the weather. When exactly did you do the ride? I think VisitScotland would want to steal some of your footage! It looks amazing in the sunshine. I have only ever done road biking and have never been interested in offroad/gravel/bivouacking, but I have to say this route (I have watched a few videos) really intrigues me.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I did the route in early June. I was so lucky with the weather. I had just the one shower near Fort Augustus and the, rest of the time it was stunning. Like you I'd done lots of road cycling but this route fascinated me as it looked epic. It's fair to say its an amazing journey. The majority of the route is really good gravel so you can really make progress. I liked the balance I got from a night in a bothy, YHA and the wild camp at Loch Drunkie. If you get an opportunity to ride it then you won't be disappointed! 🙂👍

I thought 25 minutes was going to be long but actually it has become short, nice adventure. I love traveling with my gravel bike but this route seems at times better for a hardtail with front suspension don´t you think?
@go_explore
@go_explore Год назад
Thanks for watching my video and taking the time to comment. I think a mountain would work great and there was a couple of sections that would definitely benefit from the suspension and the lower gearing. However unlike the route on my Cairngorms Loop video there are plenty of compacted gravel (and some tarmac) sections where you can really get speed up so I think a gravel bike just edges it. However the route is amazing so you will have an unbelievable time regardless 🙂

Well done a great video very detailed a great watch, what is the easiest south to north or north to south?
@go_explore
@go_explore 8 месяцев назад
Thank you.. Glad you enjoyed the video. Great question about the direction. If you go South to North the tougher sections come early (eg. Corrieyarack Pass) so I was glad to get that out of the way early when I was fresh.. However it would be epic North to South but I think the intended direction from South to North would be best. Of course, if you great weather like I did then whatever way it's done, it'll be amazing 😊
