The Band are among the all time greats and one of my favourites. They have a deep and diverse catalog. This is from the last concert of the original lineup called The Last Waltz. Up on Cripple Creek, Ophelia, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, It Makes No Difference, Chest Fever are just some of their greats. The Staples started with their Pops as a gospel singing group. Pops was a pretty good guitar player and Mavis has the voice of an angel. The had a bunch of RnB hits I'll Take You There, Respect Yourself. They wrote Freedom Highway after walking with Dr King, John Lewis et al in Selma.

When it clicks, it's magic, you got that right. This sang was written by Robbie Robertson - the guitar player with the odd looking double neck guitar - He was Cayuga and Mohawk on his mother's side, born in Ontario, Canada and raised partly on the Six Nations Reserve near Toronto. The opening line of the song, "I pulled into Nazareth" was inspired by the label inside Robbie's Martin guitar which listed the place of manufacture as Nazareth, PA.

This song is so good but this live version with the Staples is EVERYTHING!!! The Last Waltz is a live DVD of The Band’s farewell show on Thanksgiving Day, 1976. Where to begin. Levon Helm, the Drummer for The Band, takes the first verse, Mavis Staples takes the second, Papa Staples the third, Bassist Rick Danko the fourth and everyone helps on the last verse. Guitarist Robbie Robertson wrote "The Weight" on an old Martin Guitar. When he was looking for a town name in the first verse, he looked inside the guitar and saw the label with Nazareth, Pennsylvania on it, the home of Martin Guitars. Into the song it goes. This version is in the movie "The Last Waltz", directed by Martin Scorsese, documenting The Band's farewell concert at The Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The movie is astounding for all the performers who showed up and showed out. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Hawkins, Neil Diamond. The list goes on. Watch it, review it, or just enjoy yourself and chill out with it. One of the best concert films out there.

You should read up on Levon Helm the drummer and founder of the Band... the dude was a legend! He had a farm in upstate New York. I think it was around Woodstock. Every weekend he was not in the road, he would open up his barn and throw concerts... anyone who wanted to play could join in. Listen, hang out and party. There were many legendary Rock Stars that had been there over time, even a few discovered there in his barn. I heard it said the music started in a Friday night and would end until Sunday night... he really was loved by everyone in the industry and not in the music industry.

Right? Such a great collaboration. But I'm here for the 🤩*Staples Family Singers* 🤩They had a string of crossover hits in the 1970s including *I'll Take You There* which you *gotta* listen to. I saw Mavis Staples play at a small club one time and we were totally taken to church . She had a long solo career of secular and gospel music. Still strong in her 70s. Pops Staples was a friend of the Rev. MLK Jr. and the family went to tour with MLK as he brought the movement North. Pops played a real cool guitar and his vocals are so low key genius. 👀 *I'll Take You There* (1971) Staples Family. This tv performance is really fun: "TV PERFORMANCE 1971". or else the Studio version *You Are Not Alone* (2010) Mavis Staples with Jeff Tweedy when Mavis was 71. her vocals are just as rich as ever. ................................ Here's who the Family collabed with: the last 70 years: Mahalia Jackson, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Band, Martin Scorsese, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, The Muscle Shoals Swampers, Bobby Womack, Sly & The Family Stone, Jimmy Page, Ry Cooder, Prince. .................and that's not all. 👀 Thanks for the great listen!

This classic piece was originally released by the Band in 1968. But I first heard the Weight as part of the soundtrack for the 1969 counterculture film Easy Rider. Later that same year, the Band performed it at the Woodstock music festival in upstate New York. That ‘60s period was a golden era that included this type of music with the backdrop of the hippies, marijuana/drug use, the anti-Vietnam war protests, the Civil Rights movement, and other events that shaped American music, culture and politics. This particular video of the Band performing the Weight with the Staples was from 1976 that was included in the 1978 film The Last Waltz. Appreciate you covering this and I enjoyed your reaction.

Unfortunately The Band and the Staples singers didn't perform this song live at the Last Waltz. This was a studio version done during the production of the Album The Last Waltz. The band members were a little pissed at Robbie for excluding a few important acts from the live show and putting in someone like Niel Diamnd who Robbie just happend to be producing an album for at the time! So they insisted that they do a song with the Staples Singers. This was the song they did and released it on the Last Waltz album. They kind of made it look like it was live to fit in with the Live theam of the album. Still a great performance buy all and most definitely my favorite version of this song.

The Staples singers are one family and have been soul and gospel singers for generations. The Band were originally Bob Dylan's backing band and basically invented Americana - folky rock deeply rooted in history. The Band's last concert (loaded with amazing guests) was captured in the movie "The Last Waltz" which is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock movies ever. You really should sit down, and watch the movie, The Last Waltz, directed by a young Martin Scorsese, it basically covers The Band’s farewell concert. The concert includes performances by the great performers of that wonderful era of music. Comments will probably cover most of the names. Any person as interested in great music as you are, will want to experience this film in its entirety. It’s considered one of the best concert films of all time. Bob Dylan choose these guys as the band that would introduce the world to him going from folk music to Electric rock n roll. Look into a record simple known as The Basement Tapes.

Such an awesome performance! This whole concert is phenomenal. Check out the band with Van Morrison playing Caravan. Epic.

Another one from "The Last Waltz" "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" a classic sung by drummer Levon Helm. This guy was such a nice guy and loved by so many in the music world and by many fans. The Band also were Bob Dylan's backing band on some of Dylan's tours. Dylan also appears in this movie in the farewell show at the end and it's amazing. You should check the movie out young man. ☮️✌️💕👌

Mavis has no peers, she is that great. Pappy Staples' voice is its own instrument. Thank you Arkansas for Levon.
