The Band @ Watkins Glen "Too Wet To Work/Jam"

Two of the only known real soundboard clips from The Band's 1973 Watkins Glen festival show that had a massive storm blow-in mid concert and forced the group off the stage. Levon Helm describes this event in his book, "This Wheel's On Fire".
Garth could still play as his section of the stage was reasonably protected and still had safe power, so while the storm raged he played a crazy little organ jam that "controlled the elements", so to speak and cleared up the storm. Shortly after, the group came back on stage and continued the concert with a nice little jam, also included here.
Photos are from Watkins Glen and the event posters; the color shot of the band onstage is from the Roosevelt show held within that same two-week period.

I had met a pretty young lady from Jersey. When the storm hit we headed for a cattle shelter a mile from the stage. We stayed dry and spent that afternoon doing what came naturally. No matter who was around, nobody seemed to care. I can't remember that beautiful girl from Jerseys name. I wish I could, she walked into my life for a couple of days, and then left for home, we never seen each other since. The 70's, JUST WOW!

I was lucky enough to have gone to Woodstock and the Summer Jam. Went to the Jam with my girlfriend and one of my buddies. I wanted to set up the tent when we got there but they wanted to get right to partying. By the time we did it was dark and we were flying high. It rained hard that night. I remember waking up feeling like my legs were really light. It was because they were floating in water. We had tied the tent off to a fence with the window on the bottom in a drainage ditch! We still laugh about that one.

I was there with my boyfriend and best friend. I was too young to attend Woodstock, so I am happy I experienced this. I knew it would be the last great musical festival of its kind in my lifetime. I was 15 at the time, and had my learner's permit, so I could drive with a licensed adult in upstate NY. I told my parents I HAVE TO GO, and I'm going with or without your permission. The three of us all piled into my mom's station wagon with camping gear, and I loved every moment, including the standstill traffic. I was amazed that drug vendors could set up large tables and kiosks, and openly sold their wares without the state troopers hassling anyone. It was an experience of a lifetime, and I'll NEVER forget it.

TY he improvised duets and jams with intermingled members playing each others songs, et etc......AWESOME experience!!!

Drove down from Toronto on an acid bender. I’ll never forget crossing the border with a pic of Richard Nixon melting on the wall in customs (The Shape I’m In) they let us through because they couldn’t find any illicit materials. Truly epic one day event with three of the most amazing bands, all of which I can still actually listen to and still enjoy. That remains a day that shaped my musical tastes forever. I’d love to see something of that importance again, but I’d loose tha acid.

Was there with four friends from Bridgeport, Conn. About a year earlier we were at the rain soaked Pocono Concert. Needless to say we were looking forward to the Glen. Beside the great sound check, the music and the rain , the most lasting memory was the doomed flaming sky diver. What we thought in our drug haze was a great special effect turned tragic when a friend and I came across a weeping young lost girl. She said her brother was one of the sky divers. We lead her to the police trailer compound

Five of us left Queens NY in a 68 Chevy Impala a little after midnight and got upstate by 8 am. We had to ditch the car many miles away and walk in, by this time the fences were down and it was still before noon. It was a clear but hot summer day and we copped some double barrel Orange Sunshine and found a space for our beach blanket. Being up all night we fell asleep for an hour or so before the acid kicked in and woke to Bill Graham announcing the Dead at noon who played about 4 hours. All was fun and games and singing and dancing after the Dead and during the Band till those monsterous black clouds came over the mountains. Suddenly heaven turned into a living hell as a dark, windy driving poring rain overcame us. We were drenched in a few minutes and there was nowhere to run or hide, you had to stand there and take it which was pretty difficult while peaking on LSD, ha.

Hi, I was there also. Remember this very part. I trucked from Plattsburgh, NY in an old VW Beetle Bus that broke down between outside of Albany. Hitch hiked the rest of the way and got there several days before no lines or trail of cars. We hung out in tents, just layed down on the floor when it was time to go to sleep. Most people were friendly and share freely anything they had. Very worth while experience. The music was exception the experience was priceless. Peace.

I went up with a few friends, we had gone down to JFK stadium in DC in I think it was May for the warm-up concert for this show. We hijacked some buses that we got from our Catholic High school in Queens, NY - we told the school we were going to a dude ranch or something and then paid the drivers to take us to DC. We all almost got expelled. Then went to this show that summer. My psychedelic youth...miss it so much.

I was there. we pitched a tent about 200 feet from the front of the stage. We walked about 5 miles to get in. We tried to get closer but we just stopped and the cops came out and said just park, so we did. I had just graduated from high school. that summer was the best I had. I saw the dead at least 3 times and the Band 2 times. It seems strange that there was so many people there and only a bit over 5000 have found this vid. an important event in my life

I was 8 years old and living in Millport, NY when this concert went on. They all had to go past my house on RT 14 to get to watkins glen. Omg the amount of people was overwhelming. People camping in our back yard. Dad chasin em away with a shot gun. It really is a pity that there isnt any footage of the concert. This was 1 1/2 the size of woodstock and it never got the recognition.

i was there- i was 19, working in a restaurant in buffalo, i hitchhiked, got a ride from a schoolteacher, she already had 2 other hippies in her car, we had to walk at least a mile from where we parked, the fences had been torn down, slept in her sleeping bag that night, that was the last sleep i got, just wandered around, watching everything turn to mud, saw e.m.t.'s picking up people passed out in the mud like they were cordwood. i have to find more pictures, recordings from this fest!

Anyone who could remember this difference in the music between Friday and Saturday were obviously not having as much fun as I had, that's for sure!! I do remember motorcycles, VW buses and other assorted vehicles roaring around the track on Friday, people falling out of the trees during the Dead, watching the really wasted ones being air-lifted out, the "vendors" on "Main St. USA", some with glass display cases) rain during the Band, being chased off the speaker stanchion by an Oriental guy..

I was there, too! Also come down from Plattsburg NY in a van that also broke down, but it was on the way home. Had to hitchhike home. A prisoner had escaped and they were searching all the cars. Kind of creepy re-entrance to the real world after such an awesome festival. A car pulls over to pick us up on the freeway late at night and it turned out to be a friend of ours returning from a trip to NYC. Great coincidence! Great concert!

Woodstock was a cool, gentle and comfortable event compared to this disappointment, for me. Had to Park a gazillion miles from site, torrential rain then mud . Witnessed the Dead set- not a memorable one- and then 15 minutes of the Band before the deluge happened. Packed our stuff soaking wet, did the long walk back to our van and went home.

What I would love to have and to hear is the other 3 sections of the day's performances, the Grateful Dead (isn't that Donna Godchaux in the picture of Jerry onstage?), the Allman Brothers, and the jam that ran long into the night when they all got together at the end. I had just turned 21 the previous spring, and it was the summer between my junior and senior years at college in upstate New York.

I was 16 then, me and 5 others hitch hiked up there, and 'justa1883' was right, the sound check was better than the show, the Dead did like a 4 hour non-stop jam, so did the Allman Bros and The Band, but not as long as The Dead. There was a one lane road from town going to the site that never seemed to move, people pulled their cars over and walked up, we walked down to town, what a scene, the locals were freaked out...lol, everything was sold out, but they had mountains of bottled water on site
