With iron sights, if your shot hits above your POA, and you raise your rear sight, your next shot will hit even HIGHER than you previous shot. It’s always about comparing the point of aim to the point of impact. If your shot hit too high, you need to make your rifle shoot lower. To do that, you need to lower the muzzle. To do that, you need to make the rear sight lower so that, as you said, the muzzle will have to come down to meet it.

This was a very good way to explain this for beginners. I am a trainer so I often watch videos on any topic I can find where people teach something to others hoping to pick up new ideas ans skills for my work. There are a lot of bad instructors and instruction here on RU-vid, but I always try to let people know when they do an exceptional job. You have natural teacher/training skills or you are a well trained teacher/trainer. I either case, great job with your video!

Your scope instructions are great, got my daughters gun sighted in with two shots and shot a 1&1/2" group at 50 yards, but your iron sight instructions are wrong you move the rear sight the opposite way of your point of impact. i.e. If your bullet strikes the target low of the point of aim, move your rear sight up, this will cause you to raise the front of your gun, in turn raising the point of impact.

bro you answered my question in first 3 minutes. i used to always adjust scope bring the bullet up. not with the mindset that i was moving crosshairs down to the bullet hole. man that makes total sense dont see how i fucked that up. thank you, i had already bought a new scope but when having the same problem i turned to you tube. glad i did. thanks again

This guy has it wrong. The instructions for every scope I have had says to bring your shot to the cross hairs. In other words if you shoot low then you adjust your scope in the direction on the turret that says up. That brings your shot up to the level of the cross hairs.

With regards to iron sights, if you are shooting low you should raise the rear sight. If you are shooting high, you should lower the rear sight. You have it backwards. Think about it.... if you are shooting low, raising the rear sight forces you to raise the front sight to make a proper sight picture which raises the point of impact. I think you made the verbal equivalent of a typo.... hopefully. The info on the scope is good.

If you get on paper with a scope and there are markings of inches in circles you can see. Figure out how many clicks you need to move the point of aim to the bullet to the bullet. Nobody puts bullets through the same holes on a string very often, so a three shot group would be good. Move the point on the scope to the center of that. The next group should also be there too.

Hey all you 'newbies'. Please note that SOME iron sights have an adjustable FRONT sight , and it can be for either ELEVATION (usually) OR WINDAGE!! It really is RARE for windage adjustment on the front sight, but I HAVE seen a rifle or two. Just remember that not ALL rear sights adjust for BOTH elevation AND windage. CHEERS_ and please ALWAYS shoot safe!

I think you're mistaken on iron sights. Raising the rear sight raises poi. Adjusting the rear sight to the right puts poi more to the right.
@rondoschiavoni8840
@rondoschiavoni8840 8 лет назад
+Chimney Fish I'm WITH YOU CHIMMEY ,I tried this just aiming at a marked paper plate and it turns out like you say if you raise the rear site your pointing the front site and barrle more upward same with left and right opposite of what he says.
@hdhd-nz2qu
@hdhd-nz2qu 8 лет назад
+Rondo Schiavoni that is true and logical. if it is shooting high you wanna bring the barrel down not up. if it is shooting to the right(left) u wanna bring your barrel to the left(right).
@bongimperial5985
@bongimperial5985 7 лет назад
Indeed you're mistaken on iron sights. Moving the rear sight up, down, left, or right will "move" the point of impact (POI) up, down, left, or right, as the case may be. So if you're POI is high, moving the rear sight up will "move" it higher all the more.

Wrong - with iron sights you move the rear sight opposite of the impact point.. If the impact is left then move the rear sight to the right, if it impacts high then move the rear sight down.. Scope adjustments are generally the opposite of iron sights in that you follow your point of impact.. If it hits left then move the cross hairs to left.. (scope adjustment are generally the same principle as a front sight), however some import scopes are opposite (in there markings) in that the left adjustment is actually moving the cross hairs to the right (which follow the same principle as a rear sight adjustment).. This is done to make it easier for the shooter in that if they are hitting to the left so they figure they need to move the impact to the right (but internally the scope is really moving the cross hair (left) opposite to the indicated direction).. This is simple to figure out - if it impacts to the left and you turn your scope left and it hits further left then you know it is reversed.. (and behaving like a rear sight) if it does the correct adjustment (then it is behaving like a front sight)..

The Daily Shooter, thank you for this video. I've watched several and they get so involved in being technical and rushing through the process that they lose me and I'm sure they lose others. Doing a visual as you did, without a weapon, without going out to the range, you made it easy to understand and thought a newbie in scope sighting how to do this. I'm downloading this video for future reference. By the way, I seldom give praise on RU-vid because I find most videos are poorly done and seldom done with the viewer in mind, they make videos to impress us but not to teach us. Thank you for doing this video!
@jasondunbar3667

Awesome video but there are iron sights that have adjustable front sights for elevation while the rear is for windage. Most back up iron sights that are being sold on ar-15s are like this and a lot of handguns for competition have them. Granted if you have a competition handgun you are probably not a beginner.

He had me extremely confused with the iron sight explanation. I kept thinking, "If you move the rear sight up, you'll have to raise your barrel so the front will align with the rear....and, you'll shoot EVEN HIGHER than you initially did." Glad to see the other comments else I would have wasted more time thinking about this. I think he got mixed up from transitioning from the scope to the irons (i.e. adjusting the sight to the level of the target)

Easy way to think about scope crosshairs and what adjustments do: Imagine you have a rifle perfectly zeroed. You’re looking through your scope and the intersection of the reticles is exactly on your bullseye. Now, for some reason, the horizontal reticle starts to slip. Slowly, it’s moving lower and lower in your sight picture, like it’s adjusting itself on its own. But you want to keep it aimed right at your bullseye - so what would you instinctively do? You’d raise the barrel up to compensate for the downward drift of the reticle. Now you’re on zero aim again. Suddenly, your scope’s vertical reticle has a mind of its own and starts wandering to the right. Well, you want to keep it on the bullseye - so you move the barrel to the left to keep the crosshairs aimed at your bullseye. Simple!

I like the method, but your not clear on scope adjustment. If bullet is low and right, you would adjust elevation turret up and wind turret left. Long range shooters don't adjust elevation turret down if zeroed at 300 and shooting a 600 yard target... Had me mind f&$?ed for a minute. The iron sight section is misleading also

Put it in a gun vice, pick an aimpoint and shoot your target. After the recoil, you will need to point your gun back on the same aimpoint and lock down the vice. Then move the crosshairs until they are over your impact. From there, you will be close and only need to make minor adjustments.... My problem is the turrets say up ^ and left

D Mayer but if bullet is low and right you need to turn turret up and left. this confused the hell out of me, I thought my scope was broken! Turning turret up moves the POI down, moving turret left moves POI right. I kept doing the opposite, and kept getting further off target. It's counter intuitive but once you understand it, it makes sense.
