The more I think about this movie, the more I like it. I’ve watched it 3 times now and the first time I thought it ran a little too long but after viewing it again there’s not a thing I would cut out of it. It takes its time to get where it’s going and I appreciate a modern movie that does that.

I remember watching the car chase scene in the theater and thinking how incredible the hdr will look at home on a 4k disc. cant wait to get my hands on this one! thanks for the awesome review as always!

According to IMDb, JDC Scope was used in some sequences. I thought this was interesting because this process was used primarily in the 80s up to the early 90s and I’m assuming Reeves/Fraser chose this specifically for the old school look. Also, it likely explains why there is a noticeable drop off in sharpness at the edges of the frame in some scenes.

I had the same problem with seeing some dark scenes in the theater & was honestly thinking "man, I bet I'll have a better viewing experience on the 4k release". Crazy that's the world we are in now LOL

I found your channel after looking for details on how the Hobbit trilogy was filmed because it was just so damn crisp And I was trying to figure out why other 4K movies didn't look that good. Amazing content man! Keep it up!

Great review as always! Loved that you didn't overdo the Batman voice too, most people immediately go full Bale whenever they do a Batman voice nowadays haha. Very happy and not surprised to hear how great of a disc this is. I pre ordered it a few weeks ago, really looking forward to watching it again. Also, totally agree that this is hands down the best Batman movie ever made. It was like watching a comic.

I have to say the movie looked great on 4k....with the exception of the black levels. I understand why in some scenes they were elevated but in the one scene where it's practically pitch black they could have allowed full black. That chase scene though....my goodness 🥰

I love how you mentioned whether it's worth "upgrading" for your collection even though this is a brand new release so nobody had the regular bluray or a dvd before the UHD

@@JeffRauseo I guess so, the only time I buy bluray is when I can tell there won't ever be a good UHD release of the movie/show. There have been a few that I have done this with but I think it's almost always worth the UHD if for no other reason than a higher quality encode.

It's an interesting technique they used to get that unmistakable film texture but I think what Rian Johnson and Steve Yedlin did with Knives Out and The Last Jedi is way more impressive. They use algorithmic grain filters and adjust the color and contrast settings of their digital cameras to give something closer to the look of film (because film has its own inherent color bias and contrast.) No actual film was used. It's a far more involved process than that, of course, but they've been working on it for over 10 years and I think it's far more convincing that what we got on Dune and The Batman. I was completely shocked to learn that Knives Out was not actually shot on film.

Most of Last Jedi was shot on film. Johnson himself confirmed this. That said, Knives Out is easily the most “filmic” digitally shot movie I’ve ever seen.

@@listenup7284 So I guess Steve Yedlin, the DOP for The Last Jedi, was straight-up lying about it in his interview with Polygon back in Feb 2020. I can't post the link because RU-vid will delete my post but look it up. He says about 50% of The Last Jedi was shot digitally. Stop being an ass.

I want to love this 4k so bad, knowing about the digital to film to digital processing they did to give it grain. In theory it should look great but to my eyes, it makes much of the disc look more like it's suffering from compression noise rather than a grain structure that feels appropriate. I have an LG C2 and every time I pop this in I play around with settings hoping I can get a better result and it just doesn't work for me. The idea of the processing works, the aesthetic achieved just isn't the kinda film grain I love.

Thanks for another great review Jeff! This on definitely goes on the buy list! Very interested to hear about the scan from digital to film then back. I'd not thought of the economy aspect of that b4 but I guess it would less hassle- don't know much about working with movie film but makes sense. Just watched the movie, I agree on picture and sound. The audio was lacking but I have a Polk psw10 and it doesn’t get the job done. I do want to upgrade this month and rewatch. I can’t wait for the next one. Michael Giacchino does a great job on the score

Absolutely loved this movie when I saw it on a big Imax screen. Had a few drinks beforehand though and can't really remember much after the car chase so am absolutely buzzing to watch this on 4k on my Lg C1

I thought the stream was pretty dang good too and knew that if my subs were working out then, the disc was going to straight punch me in the chest full force. Can't wait!

Watch the interviews on the Dolby RU-vid page. Matt Reeves talks about how they shot with what’s considered “flawed broken” lenses. It really gave the film selective points of focus.

My 2 cents, I'm in the same camp. I haven't seen a Marvel movie since the first avengers all the way back in 2012. But Joker and this Batman are both incredible movies and a must watch for anyone into cinema. Think of it as a crime drama, more than a comic book movie.
