MY NEW FAVORITE 4K BLU-RAY! | JOKER 4K ULTRAHD BLU-RAY REVIEW 

A great looking digitally shot 4K title - but no way this can compare to transfers like 2001 - shot on 65mm (12-16K resolution equivalent) and transferred in 8K. Ya got fooled by Joker! Fantastic movie though. Cheers!

Hammer, you’ve got to take into consideration that with 2001, there probably had to be a RESTORATION process. I’m sure the camera negative was in great condition, but it’s still a “building up” of sorts. Joker is brand new and ready to go, as is. That probably accounts for something, and could potentially give it a superior picture.

@@aaronclick6388 - The point is: a film-to-digital transfer is superior to anything digital because film has much, much higher resolution (up to 18K for IMAX 70mm), and film has infinite dynamic-range. Film is still the reference standard as the source material - and even when digital technically surpasses analog on paper (i.e. high resolution PCM & DSD audio) - analog still sounds better, warmer, more alive. Celluloid film will likely always deliver a more natural, pleasing image, with better depth and color compared to digital - just as reel-to-reel studio master tape still achieves the gold standard in audio. If 2001 is too old to consider a fair comparison - look to Christopher Nolan films shot on IMAX 70mm with 6-track magnetic audio.

I was as surprised as anyone when I found out that it wasn't shot in 35mm. According to IMDB the titles were shot on film tbf.

@@DanKeatis - The biggest loss here is Todd Phillips wanted Joker to be shot on wide-format 70mm - but all of the 70mm cameras were being used to shoot the latest James Bond film, and Christopher Nolan's TENET. There are only so many 70mm cameras to go around - especially after Christopher Nolan accidentally destroyed an IMAX 70mm camera in the tunnel sequence of The Dark Knight. Joker still looks fantastic shot on wide-format digital - but the movie is such a masterpiece, it should have been immortalized on and screened in native, raw 70mm.

RU-vid can have HDR. If you search HDR videos you can find some, but yeah, never seen movie trailers or clips in HDR yet.

I mean I get it, but I just find it strange how highly it's held up when it doesn't feel new at all. It's just a mix of Taxi Driver and King of Comedy with a comic book dressing. Even the way Joker is portrayed is only a slight remix of Heath Ledger's. Joaquin Phoenix does a great job playing the part, but the overall movie just feels like a super safe "artsy" film. The Dark Knight was a far bigger landmark in my opinion, but Joker is a step in the right direction for WB and DC.

this film is not about people who have been unfairly treated. as its not a real person its only a character, if he was a real person he would be ted bundy or jack the ripper. in other words a homicidal maniac, and thats not who should be told he is a great person and portrayed well. this is why people dont get the movie. it means all serious killers should be released and given help as you state they have been mistreated in the past so its not his fault.

@@TheLingo56 I totally agree. I like the film. I love Joaquin Phoenix's performance. I guess I can watch it over and over again. However, its story is Taxi Driver meets the King of Comedy in Gotham City. on top of that Robert De Niro is in Joker as well. Certain elements of the character are the same in all three films. kinda sad, the disconnected protagonist. we wonder what's actually real, what's in characters' head etc.

The entire story from DP and camera assistants is as follows. Phillips wanted 65mm film at first but got shot down for budget reasons among other things. They were then set to shoot Joker on 35mm film for a while until some requirements on filming present a problem such as low light, Phoenix not wanting to rehearse with long tape times, focus pulling with thin DOF...etc. At that point the DP nudged Phillips into testing out a large format digital solution like the Alexa 65 and Phillips finally agreed(Phillips didn't like digital from his previous movie War Dogs).

Paul Solt usually with a week before release they stop allowing for preorders and mark as sold out. Closer to the release date they will allow for orders again or you might be able to find a copy in a store near you. It's marked as sold out so that they can say it can't be processed in actuality.

4K UHD blu-rays are region free, so not sure what you mean by "unlocked".

You’re right. It was shot digitally but since the source was at such high resolution the 4K blu ray is exceptional.
