The Batman - Movie Review 

The best part of Pattison's performance, by far, was the look in his eyes. Eerie, haunting, tired, and intense.

Many many years ago before the Dark Knight Rises was released, someone made a brilliant fan made trailer for a 3rd Nolan film with the Riddler as the antagonist and spliced in dialogue/scenes from Seven and Zodiac. I would like to thank that person for their foresight and Matt Reeves and company for making the same connection. I cant' wait to see it.

No Batman has been able to portray as much emotion while wearing the mask as Pattinson. I was thoroughly impressed. The scene where he looks at the Mayor's son while leaving his house.. you could see the welling of tears in his eyes. So crazy.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie was Batman's escape from the Police station. When he gets to the rooftop and is about to leap that momentary look of fear in his eyes right before he gathers his balls & leaps was a genius decision. It showed how alot of what was going on was new to this Batman and how at the end of the day he's just a man. The word that kept coming to my mind the entire time watching this movie was MASTERPIECE. Can't wait to see it again.

I can’t believe that it’s been almost 10 years now since the last standalone Batman film.

So happy the director seemly had control of the vision of this film. That is always a good start to a great movie

I loved when the Riddler disciple says “I am vengeance.” It was the moment when Batman realized how limited and wasteful that was. Batman needed to be more. When the bad guys usurped that position, Bruce realized he was free to move off that whole thing and be who the people needed. Vengeance will get you nowhere.

I love how when Batman walks out of the shadows, he’s just completely focused on his target. No emotion, no running. He’s just completely concentrated rage directed towards crime and his actions perfectly reflect that.

Finally a movie with a Batman that’s actually “the world’s greatest detective”

One of my favourite lines in this movie is “What is this, good cop, batshit cop?” 😂

Colin Farrell really was insanely good. Penguins voice perfectly matched his appearance. And Pattinson makes a brilliant Batman

I love that this Batman finally puts Goth in Gotham. Where Nolan's Gotham literally looks like New York Reeves' Gotham is gritty, wet, dark and gothic. It was amazing to see the cityscape

"Sometimes the camera isn't even moving. It's just a locked down wide of Batman beating the shit out of people... Which is wonderful!!" This sold the movie to me! 🤘🏻 Can't wait for it after this review...

Pattinson does a fantastic job of acting with his eyes in this film. The way he's able to express his emotions with a mask covering his face for 90% of the movie is amazing. I can't wait to see this again!

one of my favorite parts is at the very beginning when you can see the genuine fear in the criminals faces while looking into the shadows.

I love how the Batman was depicted as the boogie man for the bad guys.

I liked Riddler a lot. Paul Dano’s performance was genuinely unsettling at times.

Watched this in the IMAX and wow, I haven't experienced that spine tingling feeling in a long time during a movie. The Batmobile sounded like a rocket taking off, it was an intense, amazing experience. The use of sound to introduce both Batman and The Batmobile was just astounding. Unforgettable.

The most mature Batman movie ever. It was an artwork and puts the whole IP to a new perspective. There was real character development too, which was missing from almost every other movie adaptation.

It's really was a 3 hour movie that felt like 2. Well done to the cast and crew. Legendary!

They made Batman feel like a person fighting other people, granted with bullet proof armor still, the fight scenes were surprisingly human.

Robert Pattinson was great in The Lighthouse. Holding your own with Willem Dafoe says quite a bit about a person's abilities. So I had little doubt when he was announced as Batman that he could be right for it.

Was absolutely blown away, always had faith with Patterson, but he completely exceeded my expectations. I cannot wait for the this trilogy to come to life. As a Batman film, it was legit everything that a Batman film should be. He even spends a great deal of it being a detective. Interrogating, forensic analysis, puzzle-solving. We actually get to see Batman BE “the Worlds Greatest Detective”.

So happy to hear it’s what we all hoped for! Seeing the Fan First event of it on the 2nd. Can’t wait to see it in an auditorium full of hyped up Batman Fans. 🤟🏻

Bro that car chase scene was definitely the best experience i've had especially in IMAX, overall the movie felt like an actual film rather than the superhero roller coaster ride like what Marvel does, it felt raw, intense and somehow moving, its almost a 10/10 film for me to be honest, not to mention the cinematography definitely Oscar worthy and the makeup for the Penguin.

Robert’s able to Chanel that pathos and pain of Batman by thinking about his Twilight Years.

Something extremely creative detail that I noticed in the film, was Batman’s Batcave. You can really tell that Batman is still new to being a superhero because the Batcave still looks like a part of the mansion’s attic or basement, there isn’t a lot of equipment that shows he is fully experienced. There is only the necessary things Bruce needs.

Chris's fervor for Pattinson makes me happy. The amount of overlooking that this man gets in his career for taking on Twilight is criminal. Looking forward to this!

What you said about how Wayne Manor looks is how I feel about the setting over all from what I've seen in the trailers. If I have any issues with Nolan's trilogy it's that after Batman Begins, Gotham just feels like generic Chicago. A plain city. This movie still has the same grounded aesthetic as Nolan's trilogy but it does it while somehow also maintaining that Gothic atmosphere.

I would like to see Mr. Freeze in this Batman universe. He needs a second chance in a live action Batman film.

3 hour movie that felt like a 3 hour movie

The reason why I loved this film was because the story building, world building, felt like a priority; it felt organic, whereas the previous films felt more heavily focused on the actors portraying these characters, this feels as though the characters came first? The actors second. Absolutely outstanding film, and I cannot wait for the sequel

I've been hoping there would be a more detective focused Batman film for years. I am hyped to see this some time soon.

I watched it yesterday with My wife, at the end of the movie we were walking out and she said: "I loved this movie"! As a Batman fan and humble toy collector, My job is done and thank You Matt Reeves!!! There is hope!

I enjoyed this movie a lot. Batman has always been one of the most realistic superheros, but this took it to a level where you felt like this version of Batman could actually exist. The technology used was high tech but at the same time nothing was too far fetched. I especially like the part where he jumps off the building with his wing suit, and ends up crashing and hurting himself. It showed that he was still new to being Batman and not perfect at everything. You see Batman on the crime scenes analyzing everything much faster than other detectives, and noticing things that the others don't. He is able to solve the first riddle within minutes. This movie basically shows that Batman is a world class detective.

This is like what happens when everyone gives 100% in a group project. An awesome Batman movie.

Someone found a way to use Pattinson’s low range to great effect. Intriguing movie, really well made. Anything with Andy Serkis in it is worth watching.

To all of us who had a strong feeling this would be one of, if not the best Batman film ever produced - This is great to hear and I cannot wait to watch the early premier of it tomorrow!

I’m just glad Batman actually SAVED people. A lot of times in superhero movies, you don’t often get shots of them helping people from dangerous situations. When they do it’s usually a means to an end, like the villain got a hostage or is trying to slow the hero down. So glad this movie got to remind us that Batman is a HERO who goes out of his way to help people, even when the villain is already defeated. I love the MCU, but wouldn’t it have been cool to see shots of the Avengers saving people after the battle of New York in Avengers 1? That shawarma scene was funny, but I’d rather see Thor lift some people out of rubble or Iron Man do a search-and-rescue for survivors.

Dude. I just gotta say you are absolutely amazing at this. By far the most balanced and honest movie critic/reviewer alive. Never fails to get your opinion before seeing a movie.

Many people still don't understand why this movie is a gem in the superhero/comic book genre.

Pattinson’s recent roles are a big part of what makes the films he plays in so engaging. Good Time, The Lighthouse, The Devil All the Time, The Rover, Tenet… I mean damn the dude can act. I’m anticipating the best Bruce Wayne yet.

Really hope this movie cements matt Reeves in that masterclass of director group. He's fucking killed it every time he's come out to direct. I remember being blown away by Cloverfield and he hasn't disappointed since.

I really loved this movie. This is the first Batman movie since mask of the phantasm where not only are the villians/side characters are interesting, but Batman/Bruce as well. I loved what they did with the Penquin (still think the Animated series did the version, and have a soft spot for DeVito). This movie definitely feels like a combination of Burton, Nolan and The Animated Series. Giacchino's score is phenomenal, and has elements of Danny Elfman and Shirley Walker, particularly a moment when Selina jumped out of a window after suiting up. It had the little light music cue that Walker did in the Animated series

Every actor / actress in this movie played their character beautifully. They were so true to their role and understood the assignment. Amazing movie 🎥

My only issue with the movie is that it can feel like 2 parts. The riddler, and Carmine Falcone. I wish they could’ve integrated the 2 stories together a little better but other than that I absolutely loved the movie

Although Batfleck had his problems I was always a fan…especially of the fight scenes because it felt like it came straight out of an Arkham game. However this Batman’s fighting style was my favorite by far because it felt real with every blow, he took damage, and he used his gadgets seamlessly in each action scene. I train in a few different fighting disciplines and really got to geek out during this movie haha

the batman has great storytelling , charachter development and smart writing , great acting , great action , great music , great camoes , great cinematography , great detective elements and riddles and new gadgets and technology used by batman , great story arcs good job matt reeves he is one of the best directors working in hollywood . the only bad part was the length of the movie .

I agree, the house was very "manor-esque" but in a way that he also kind of left it to rot, just as much as his family legacy. It doesn't interest him. The Wayne Enterprise, The Playboy Lifestyle, he couldn't care less. He's someone who never got over that initial trauma and is still carrying that anger. For 20 years. Fuck 😐

As an old fella, who was into Batman for a few years as a kid - long before most of y’all were born, any interest I had in superheroes stopped by age 8 or 9 (83-84). So, obviously, I just don’t get this whole resurgence in popularity of comic books by adults at all. And I had absolutely no interest or intention in seeing this film. But it is on HBO and nothing else interested me either, so last night I gave it a shot. Anyway, here’s a quick review (that absolutely no one asked for) from an old dude who isn’t into superhero movies at all… It was absolutely fantastic. It really was.

i loved how the light reflecting white on the eyebrow areas of batmans mask made it look like the 60s mask with its white chalk lines in certain shots

Watched it in IMAX last night. Unforgettable experience. Rob Pattinson knocked it out of the park. He felt like the batman from the Arkham video games walked onto the big screen. His mannerisms and movements were spot on. Cannot wait for the sequel

I would also like to point out one thing which I really liked: if you have played barman Arkham knight or any other batman games then you will see the similarity of the environment of the city at night, like the sound of the metros and the whole environment of the city the movie really replicated the night environment of the city perfectly that made me really happy

This is the Batman movie that I've waited my whole life to see. It truly felt like Batman to me. I have a few nitpicks with it, but I'd LOVE to see a hundred more movies about Batman in this style. This felt like it was made by a team of people that finally truly understand the character.

This film was purely outstanding and entertaining for once it gave justice, no pun intended to the original detective character of Batman found in the comics. Sound and vision excellent, cast even better. It was dark and menacing, loved it.

Loved the Batman portrayal and especially the villains! They did an amazing job on that side of things. I did feel like cat woman fell flat for me and that there wasn’t really chemistry between them. So I dislike that side plot, however the rest of the movie was fantastic. I loved the darker realistic take on Gotham and really felt the distinction between that Gotham and other Gotham’s I’ve seen in films before. Can’t wait for the sequel!!!

The fact that this perfectly lived up to expectations is just a testament to how good superhero movies have gotten recently, i'm surprised this didn't get as much internet coverage as i thought it would, maybe the highly congested internet entertainment world that we live in can make even masterpieces of film get slightly overshadowed.

So glad it has Chris' seal of approval. A lot of the filming locations were in the UK, especially Liverpool and Glasgow which have beautiful gothic architecture, so I'm also hoping it can capture that gritty art-deco style that Gotham has in Batman The Animated series or even the Gotham TV series. I love TDK trilogy but the city itself sadly never had that much personality.

I’m so excited for Matt Reeves and his career, he has already cemented himself as one of the best sci-fi/fantasy directors of the century with Let Me In, War for the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield, and now the Batman. Masterpieces by a master filmmaker.

I don't think we've ever seen a live action Batman that lives up to the 'Symbol' of a super hero, rather than just a masked vigilante. The term 'Character Arc' gets thrown around like the word 'inconceivable' in Princess Bride sometimes, but in this movie we have a Batman/Bruce Wayne that ends up a totally different core character than how he started out, taking the mantle of something more than just a vigilante. Christian Bale's Batman got close to this by the end of his third movie and his Batman will probably still be remembered as the best character portrayal of Bruce Wayne and Batman as two parts of one whole rather than two seperate entities. But Pattinsons first outing as Batman is really strong and if they make any sequels I hope they can make it just bigger and better. Small things I really liked: - Batmans use of gadgets. From grappling hook to even some kind of baton in his forearm guards. Patbat has a really awesome arsenal. - The City of Gotham feels like its own city rather than a reskin of New York or Chicago, it was awesome to see these gothic structures blended into the cityscape. If only we got view of some blimp in the air then it'd be perfect. - The Detective approach. - The Music.

The car chase was the highlight of the film for me. I saw it in dolby vision yesterday, and the theater shook whenever he reved the batmobile's engine.

This absolutely felt the way a Batman movie should feel. I loved every bit of it. Annnd, it reminded me a lot of the games. Everyone did an outstanding job and Colin Farrell.....standing ovation sir...I had no idea the entire movie that that's who that was!!

Chris is the only reviewer I'll watch before seeing a movie I'm looking forward to. The way he talks about film gets me so excited to go to the theatre. Absolutely can not wait to see The Batman after watching this. True passion comes through in these reviews. I can't wait to watch Shelby Oaks. "Justice not vengeance" is the moral I took away, loved this movie. I like how you mentioned Robert Pattinson was great as Bruce and batman. I feel like Bale was on point for Bruce and Ben Affleck was a tank of a batman but Rob nailed it all

The sound design in particular was amazing, you could hear everything so well. Also I got strong Jeffery Dhamer and Zodiac Killer vibes from the Riddler. Dano was excellent, and the movie was phenomenal. It did feel long but I was never bored. Soils 8.5-9 for me

Robert definitely is now my favorite Batman/Bruce. Just watched it with my wife and we were blown away. She even said it felt like seven when we drove home.

What this reminds me is when I saw the jam band “Dead and Company” and I didn’t know anything about John Mayer and when I saw him perform I was blown away. My wife said that I should listen to his pop music and I said: “absolutely not”. I didn’t want to be polluted and enjoy his wonderful performance. I feel the same with Robert Pattinson…I’ve never seen the “Twilight movies”…all I’ve ever seen him was “The Lighthouse” and “the Batman”. I think he’s great!

Superhit movie...!! Robert Pattinson nailed it and the catwoman was wild as a fire sweet desire....!!! Villain Riddle was epic jail sequence with batman was brilliant... Dialogues plays an important part in this movie though 👍👍

I watched batman in the theatres yesterday, and holy shit I think this is easily one of my top 10 fav movies ever. The movie's flow and theme was so gritty and realistic, and Robert's acting was amazing! He was able to show raw emotions even when his face was 80% covered. The look in his eyes looked authentic and real, portraying a more melancholic and sad Bruce Wayne, contrary to the playboy and extravagant Bruce Waynes before him. I admit I underestimated robert as batman but now after watching I'm so glad to be proven wrong 🔥

I saw it last night and oh my god I was speechless. I was hooked! It kept me guessing who was the riddler and I love movies like that.. I like to keep guessing and how to figure out the riddle. Robert Pattinson killed it as Batman!! I loved it! And everyone in my cinema session clapped at the end of the film. It was so well done. I loved it so much that I got the pop vinyls, and a tshirt. I loved that line at the start where he says “I’m vengeance” that gave me chills down my spine. I loved cat woman!!. I hope there is a sequel! Bring it on!

Wow bro, I totally did not know the director of Cloverfield led this film. That’s one of my favorite movies ever. Saw it in theaters 6 times. Explains a huge reason why I loved this movie. I love your position on this film. You’re reminding me why I really loved it. Friends of mine complained on its length but I don’t think they really got it. As for Robert, you actually made a great point in his silence. That’s how Batman IS, mostly. It’s really robust. Man, so much to talk about. Love you Chris.

Just watched it. What an awesome introduction to an even more grounded, young and restless Bruce Wayne. With only two years for young Batman the film is dark, it’s gritty and it’s all about the detective work. This is why we all love Batman, because he has so many layers up on layers to explore. Matt Reeves just revolutionized the Riddler. Paul Dano was amazing, pretty much every cast is amazing. What I really like is that the film shows us how young Batman is scared to even fly off high rise buildings stil, but also throws out his body with no hesitation to enemy bullets, sometimes not being able to control his anger during a fight. He gets shot in the chest, punched in the head and doesn’t give in. But above all it haunts him to see anyone get hurt because he’s still affected by the death of his parents. The cinematography is amazing, and boy the city of Gotham is just on another level. You’ll get scared to even pass by the city let alone live there. Shows the true nature of corruption and political deceives. Reeves created a unique Batman sets just as Nolan’s was different than Tim Burton, as well as for Zack Snyders Batman. Each directors build their own unique elements and universe for the Batman. Perhaps the greatest advantage is that character Batman is so versatile and any director can interpret it based on the excellent comic books written. DC needs to focus on these kind of movies because honestly they’re just perfect. I’m hoping we will get another amazing trilogy if it continues like this. My respects to all the previous and current directors for giving us different types of Batman. I really like all the Batman iterations since 2005. (Baleman, Batfleck. & Battison).

Glad to hear that the detective aspect is explored here. The Arkham games and the original Batman animated series got his detective aspect spot on, I've been waiting for a movie to do the same!

On an overall grade for this movie I would give it a C-. My issues with this movie. 1. No origins discussed clearly about any character. - Batman 1989, discussed the main motivation for him becoming Batman - to find the killer of his parents, which turned out to be Jack. Also reveals the origin of the Joker. - Batman returns reveals the origination of the penguin, also reviews the origination of Catwoman in a brief synopsis. - Batman begins trilogy discusses the origin of Batman in grave detail. This Batman film did none of those things. Instead keeps things hidden, except for the mysterious revelation of Bruce Wayne's father and the dark secrets of his mother. Never revealed any of this in any Batman film I've ever seen, which would make me skeptical of the truth behind the Batman story of that mystery revealed.

I left the movie speechless. The acting, the cinematography, the music is just… Picasso!

So refreshing to hear positive commentary (and not just speculative) that this movie is actually good. I'm excited to see it.

I’ve said it for years. RP is an amazing actor. People can say what they want about the Twilight films, but he nailed the role in that as well. Was actually impressed with the movie. I'd put it up there with Dark Knight its just a different aesthetic. It gives more vibes of Batman Beyond than just Batman. 9/10. Patterson did the movie justice or vengeance..

I knew from the moment Matt Reeves was attached and spoke about his detective neo-noir vision for the movie, that this was gonna be the comicbooky, mystery-oriented Batman movie I've been waiting to be made for so long and judging by these fucking stellar reviews, he didn't dissapoint and managed to deliver yet another deliberately crafted masterpiece.

Sounds like this would’ve been an A+ rated film back when Chris graded movies in his reviews. Looking forward to seeing it! 🍿

I loved the "Tucker tool" scene. Batman would have never known this because of his wealthy upbringing, but a cop-who's uncle was a carpenter was able to provide the meaning to the seemly odd death weapon, which was another clever clue by the Riddler.

i felt the same goosebumps just like when i was first watching Dark night when watching this, i also love how this Batman focusing more on the detective side
