To this day they've never brought to life the real character of Batman. We had glimpses of it but never the full persona of Batman; the immense rage under control, the right voice tone, the physical body and skills, the fear presence, the gadgets, the detective and genius mind, the sadness disguised with hope. This is a good thriller movie but a bad Batman movie.

MY version of Batman has him ENDING each criminal, by saying "don't worry. I'm not going to KILL you. Death is humane. I'm just going to burn out your eyes and your crotch...using SULPHURIC ACID (!!!)....." and then he also know how to stomp their spines to make them quadraplegics for life! "I want you to BEG FOR DEATH every moment for 80 years!" I think the point of this Batman feeling so different in this movie is that he’s still so young, still mad about his past and doesn’t seem like he’s done all of that harsh mental training that comics Batman has gone through. It feels like he hasn’t even begun to start to process all of his grief and other emotions that Batman has to conquer in order to be Batman. “Vengeance” in this movie is called that because he refers to himself as Vengeance in order to instill fear. Near the end of the film, one of Riddlers social media henchmen refers to himself as Vengeance as well, revealing to Batman that this moniker, instead of instilling fear in criminals, encouraged more to become masked vigilantes, for better or worse (worse in this case). The scene in which Batman is helping survivors at the end, specifically the kid holding onto Batman’s arm as he was airlifted away, juxtaposed the innocent man at the Subway at the beginning of the film, fearing Batman even after being saved. Batman reflects his true purpose through this: Gotham needs him as a symbol of Hope, not Fear. “Vengeance” is Fear; “Batman” is Hope. Thus, by the end of the film we are watching the man Vengeance become The Batman we know.

@Siddharth Sriram Almost every Batman film ever has had some form of suspension of disbelief. Most of your critiques are about the comic characters themselves. Batman has always worked with the detectives without being recognized as Bruce Wayne. Are you also upset that Clark Kent doesn’t get recognized as Superman? It seems to me like you went into this movie solely to tear it apart and not enjoy a single moment of it. And after you said there are no cool action sequences I’m not even sure you watched the whole film. It’s okay if it wasn’t your cup of tea but 3/10 is a laughable rating. I’d love to know what you would’ve done differently, without trying to replicate the almighty Nolan films.

@Siddharth Sriram You've already lost all credibility for an opinion so why do you want to go on? The only valid criticism you have is that Bruce Wayne wasn't done well. But for this version of batman that's not a problem. The cape is fine, batman being dumb at certain points is funny and theres this magical thing called "character growth" that you probably hate. The dark look fit the theme of the movie, you're on some copium if you think the one "woke" dialogue is a problem. The action was great when it was there, idk what problem you could have with it. Writing was great yes the screenplay has charm. You're just an old fart. And everything after that is nonsense. You must have just had a bad day before seeing the movie because you're completely out of it talking about this movie

My thoughts exactly. I thought Batman being kind of a nunce made perfect sense considering its his early days. Gadgets aren't refined, his interrogation isn't refined, his fights aren't refined and his executions aren't refined. It felt natural. I know you said you couldn't get to every plot point, but I'm honestly shocked that you didn't mention the moment in the finale where the Riddler goon said "I'm vengeance" and Patman had his turning point. When he cut the line with the batarang and went into the water, it felt like the vengeful Batman died, and emerged from the water the hero that the people of Gotham needed. When he lit that flare and started saving everyone, and we got that beautiful birds eye shot of everyone coming out of the rubble, I was almost in tears. It was so powerful to me. We hardly ever get to see Batman save people. You know, being a superhero! You watched him develop empathy for the child of the Mayor throughout the film because he reminded Bruce of his younger self. Then he grows close with Alfred and allows himself to open up and express that he cares for Alfred. His interactions with Selena are initially cold and unemotional, but the more she endures, the more Bruce feels for her and speaks to her in a concerning manner rather than a disconnected one. He grows so much throughout the film and it's beautiful. I like that with Homecoming as you mentioned, we're seeing heroes start before they learn rather than learn and then start. Batman Begins did a great job with the learn and then start method, but I think I like this more. You don't just go through your origin and then become the iconic hero. It happens over time. Your experiences change you and make you grow. I loved that about this film. Emotional pay-offs and strong character arcs are the best.

Kinda took the 1 dimensional Batman/Wayne aspect to be intentional. He’s tormented by his parents murder and adopting this vengeance persona, shutting everyone he cares about out and relying solely on fear until Alfred gets hurt because of it which opens his eyes somewhat. During the climax after sacrificing himself and “baptising” in the flood he resurfaces, not as vengeance but as Batman, with a new outlook to inspire hope not just fear. This is why I feel we’ll see a much more fleshed out interpretation moving forward. I thought it was really well done in that regard.

The movie really suprised me. I never would have expected that this story's theme would be "Batman needs to be a hero and not a vigilante". It goes so deep into what makes Batman Batman, something that normally isn't explored that much. He inspires the wrong kind of people and needs to be more than just a guy that beats up random criminals for his mission to succeed. It makes his no killing rule make more sense, since not only does he want to stop bad guys to get a sense of revenge, but rather make Gotham a better place. It feels like one of the most comic book accurate versions of Batman ever, even in the sort of hyper realistic world he lives in. Like he could do the things animated Batman did, unlike almost all other movie Batmen. He learns that other people suffered the same or even more than him because they didn't have his wealth and an Alfred to fall back on. He learns to be more empathetic, which is something Batman always has been at his core. One of the best portrayals of Batman ever and I honestly can't wait for more. WB please write a blank check to Reeves, Pattinson and Kravitz (she was awesome too, loved what they did with Selina) and let them do as many more of these as they want.

This Batman felt a lot like Netflix Daredevil to me, which I love. They're both clearly very skilled, but they're just not perfect, physically or mentally. They make mistakes, they get hit, they get hurt. But they keep getting up and fighting until eventually they do win, no matter what sacrifices they have to make. One of the main things that makes Batman who he is and one of the things that I love about the character is that he is only human. Just one person taking on all the crime bosses in an entire city is pretty much impossible, let alone in the extended universe contending with gods and people with actual superpowers. But the one thing that sets Batman (and Daredevil) apart from the rest of us is that they refuse to give up, even if it kills them. I personally really like this take on Batman where he doesn't feel like this "unstoppable force" (at least not yet) because it really shows the CHARACTER of Batman, not just his skills or physical prowess. He's not unstoppable, but that won't stop him from trying. And btw, I don't think the 2 years thing really matters; the point is that he's still starting out, doesn't matter how long he's actually been Batman. And maybe he isn't unstoppable even after 2 years because he was trained by Alfred instead of master assassins. If you compare this Batman to like Ben Affleck's, that one was unstoppable, insanely skilled and powerful. And that was really really cool, but that's about it. In my opinion, there wasn't much to his character. And that's why probably the only thing I've seen more than once from that entire character's screentime was that warehouse scene (cause it was so cool). In this Batman, I think they're starting out on a GREAT foot, because let's be real, there are definitely going to be sequels, and I bet this Batman will be unstoppable eventually. But starting it out this way, showing Batman's character more than his abilities, just gives us someone to root for, more so than any other on-screen Batman I feel. And when he does become unstoppable, we will all have seen and experienced and felt this progress. It will have been earned.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who noticed this. That's probably the reason this is my favorite version of batman. Truth be told I've never been the biggest batman fan, I think he's a wildly overrated character. @Hunterfalke
@Hunterfalke 2 года назад
Totally agree. When the movie got described as "Young Batman, super angry" my hype died immediately. It is such a clichee story that has been done a bunch of times. But this movie really took that concept and ran a marathon with it. Rarely does Batman have a character arc, and there are multiple in this one, from learning to care about Alfred to the "Am i actually Vengeance" question. I believe this movie is extremely solid, like a really good 7/10 or 8/10. To me, it was absolutely perfect, a full 10/10, just because i love the way this movie was build, designed and shot. I adore it. That said, i do have 3 small problems; Alfred should have thrown the bomb the second he saw "To The Batman", he was on this case with Bruce from the beginning. Should've recognised and acted in an instant instead of checking out the packaging to see a red blinking dot. That was the only moment that actually felt cheap to me. Second, i could've really gone without the Joker. Unless it's Cameron Monaghan, i am not interested and i really could use some pause from that particular villain. And third, i really do not like a Batman that is impervious to bullets. Bulletproof, sure. Walking through automated gunfire uninhibited, that's Supermans/WWs business. I would have liked a few scenes of recuperation and pain actually hindering him. As is, he withstood shotgun blasts. That's a bit much. I hope the next installment has hima bit less tanky and more dodgy.
@thebagelbomb
@thebagelbomb 2 года назад
@@Hunterfalke And I absolutely agree with you. I didn't mind the Alfred bomb thing, and I feel like even if he did throw it, it was such a big explosion it probably wouldn't have done much. But I do also think we could use a break from the Joker, and I did appreciate that they decided to go pretty much exclusively with a much more underused and misused villain (Riddler) and do the character right this time. Although the Joker tease was more than likely just studio interference ("it's Batman, we gotta have a Joker"), I feel like it was really the only studio interference this movie had, which is actually amazing nowadays. The thing I most agree with what you just said (and probably my biggest / only major problem with this movie) is the bulletproof thing. I'd say it's not too unrealistic (for Batman that is, not a normal person in the real world), but it did kind of detract from his physical vulnerability (but mental fortitude) that I mentioned. It was good that they did show him getting worn out by the end. And actually, the suit being bulletproof is what I think isn't too unrealistic; the exposed mouth is extremely unrealistic. There's no way that all those bullets didn't shatter/ricochet and send shrapnel into his mouth/eyes. But anyway, like you said hopefully they move away from that in the sequel. Maybe with the city flooded and shut down, his suit will be damaged and he can't get those expensive materials shipped in to repair it, so he'll have to be more dodgy, or something like that.

something that really set my expectations high early into the movie is the scene where the Riddler is sitting quietly stalking the mayor. You expect them to play it a bit like a scary movie, showing more shots of him lurking around him or getting closer or having a loud audio stinger. Instead we get one shot of him standing in the background, and they let the scene basically go on for 10 or 20 more seconds while the mayor is watching the news. I personally didn't take the, "I'm Vengeance" thing literally. I interpreted it as a theme and a metaphor more than his literal identity. Part of why I liked this iteration of Batman so much is that he's a young, angry version of the character that hasn't found his way yet. Right now as a year 2 Batman he truly sees himself as an instrument of vengeance and fear, nothing more. Riddler sees him that way too and latches onto that and uses him as inspiration to dawn his own mask and seek vengeance as well. He sees himself and Batman as partners, how could they not be? They want the same thing. Which was a turning point for Batman in this film, because he realized that if all he is to the city is vengeance then he's not going to inspire anything but more Riddlers, as we see when he's beaten the shooters at the end and one repeats, "I'm vengeance." Him choosing to help the people in the rubble and lead them to safety and then staying until dawn to comfort the people who had come to view him as a savior made him realize he couldn't just be vengeance to make a change in Gotham. He needed to become more, he needed to inspire things like hope and change as well. Part of him reaching that conclusion was also accepting that he still has things to lose and still has things he cares about, like Alfred and Selina. When he realizes Alfred could've died and that he actually cares, or that Selina could be going down the wrong path and he could lose her, it's a wake up call for him. He's been so busy brooding and not caring whether he lived or died that he'd forgotten that there are people he wants to protect and that he needs to be better for their sake. He needs to live for their sake and rise above his scars and his pain. This is all just my interpretation, obviously. If people just chalk this up to emo Batman I won't blame them but I think it's short-sighted. I hope if they make sequels they'll deliver on these ideas. I want to see Bruce using his money to help people and I want to see moments of Batman being a real hero.

Batman in this for me was the closes we have gotten to a true weird Batman, the Batman that's awkward in conversation, the Batman that doesn't say much, the Batman that literally doesn't give a fu-k. Yes he was a very dark take on Batman but I felt it was the most true to the character we've seen on the big screen. He's in year 2 and by the end he shows some compassion rather then just "vengeance" I really loved the detective side of batman we got in this, the crime scenes, him doing real detective work, stuff we haven't had until now, it really built up the action, and when it happened it felt special. He wasn’t desperate, impatient and old enough for him to be lazy and just started killing mobs for no fucking reason. Just because superman is doing the hero business gives Batman no rights to be so off character and start killing people. @TheEternaltan

The reason why this batman didn't feel like any other batman in this movie was Instead of giving the arc of trauma of his parents the character arc in this movie was him discovering how vengeance is his idea of justice and that is what his batman portrays as {spoiler alert} in the end one of the many Riddlers when asked by gordon who are you supposed to be & he gives the same answer batman gave to the mob of freaks in the beginning of the film - "I'm vengeance" Which made batman realise he has inspired people in a bad way, and hope is what gotham needs not vengeance Riddler recognises this when he says to him -"the whole city wants to unmask you, but i know this is the the real you, the mask also brought out the real me" Meaning you can take your mask off but that doesn't change who you're, it leaves a mark on your psyche and personality And in my opinion this bruce Wayne is true to life depiction of how a man who will try to balance two polar opposite sides of his personality will fail terribly if his conviction to put on a mask is to represent vengeance and not hope. I don’t see these characters as reimaginings. These versions of them might just be the most raw versions we’ve ever seen on screen. Batman in the beginning was as he said a creature of the night, every night plunging deeper and deeper into that darkness, he’s reckless and angry. Most of his gear he made himself hence the wing suit and why the batmobile is made from a muscle car. Also they took inspiration from the earth one version of Alfred, who did train Bruce. I think the reason people say it doesn’t feel like Batman is because we’ve never gotten to see a Batman like this, that completely encompasses everything about who the Batman is. Every aspect of this movie felt like it was taken directly pulled from the comics. The key inspirations being Year One, Long Holiween, and Earth One. Yeah, I don't exactly agree with Jeremy on his assessment of Batman. I felt this is the most complete (but "in-progress" at the same time) Batman I've seen. Right from the beginning it's established how much of his presence is felt to everyone when he shows up, done through audio and the heavy steps when he's walking towards someone. But also, it establishes that at this point, this Batman is a little too over-confident. You can notice this from the very start. He feels like a cocky Sherlock during the initial investigation and that he relies heavily on his knowledge, deductions, intellect and fighting abilities, but then Riddler turns this upside-down at every turn, which is what a compelling villain should do, and by the end he learns a lesson about himself and about "the job" only because it's the first time someone really matched him in wits and intelligence and is clearly not your average thug or mobster. You can also see how he keeps treating Alfred like shit because he doesn't really want to involve him and cause him any pain or difficulties, but then, when he gets hurt, he understands that it was the wrong approach, something that all the comic book Batmen have done (push loved ones away) and is a core struggle with Batman in most great comic books.

I think having Alfred absent from most of the film is Batman's doing. Their first scene together sets them up as being distant. Bruce doesn't want to feel attached to Alfred because he doesn't want to feel the fear of losing someone he care's about. Made perfect sense to me. This is by far my favorite portrayal of Batman on the big screen. I think Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson nailed it on all accounts. This Batman hasn't reached a point where he's found a way to balance his alter egos but that makes it much more interesting to me. Kevin Conroy's Batman is a great finished product type of Batman, and that works for the animated series. I have no interest in seeing a Batman on the big screen who comes prepackaged with character development. I would much rather watch a character grow over the course of three films instead of having a Batman that has no where to go development wise. That's why Batman is so sidelined in The Dark Knight. Harvey Dent, The Joker, and Comissioner Gordon are much more interesting in that movie compared to Bruce Wayne.

The scenes of Batman with the flare, becoming the symbol of hope leading these people out of their horrible situation brought me to tears. I don’t usually cry at movies, but something about this inspired and truly moved me. I loved it, and felt like it really showed how Batman is a beacon to the people of Gotham. With what’s going on in the world today, the idea of a savior-figure to lead out of the darkness just hits.

I actually think this version of our caped crusader is the most accurate, relying on fear, silent, smarter than the usual detective(the other batmen didn't do much detective work, besides the gotham bruce wayne and Batfleck, but he was a detective, detective, and i liked his brooding. Still young, so rageful depression is kinda on point. Him retreating behind the mask, too, on point. I guess he's not able to have that duality to him, where bruce and the bat are so different that they contrast over eachother, this one here is an all out obsessive, even, batman, that also occasionally has to be Bruce Wayne. I liked him more than the previous ones, for sure, W movie. Ooh, and he used the most batman-y things like fear factors, clues, the fighting felt like a freshman batman, his utility was great... Idk i love what Mat Reeves did with the character. My only 'why' would be the look of Bruce Wayne, meaning, his hair long and emo like, but Kurt Cobain inspirations, i guess...

I think its meant to show how little he cares about "Bruce Wayne" at this point. His hair is messy and generally unkempt, he makes basically no public appearances and hes terrible at managing his company and his money given that Alfred hinted at the fact that they were on the road to bankruptcy because of his inattention. The sequel is the perfect opportunity to explore Bruce rebuilding a public image. Because with the city the way it is, there is stuff he can only do as Bruce and not as Batman.

This batman while different to be sure, felt like almost the most in tact version of the character, that we perhaps have ever gotten, each version of the Bat has gotten elements right, Nolan/Bale got the Bruce vs Batman dynamic nailed down, Affleck and Snyder got the anger, combat and potential for growth, Burton well at least he got the character taken seriously. This version seemingly nailed it on most fronts especially when it comes to the No guns/killing rule that has been so absent from most if not all modern telling, even Nolas Batman did not have moment where he actively saved the lives of corrupt cops, or go storming into a fortress to stop Selina from crossing that line, as for the Bruce vs Batman dynamic (and this is putting faith in future stories so if im wrong when a sequel comes out this is null and void) but the whole point of this was that vengeance and anger, this proto-batman did not work and he needed to evolve, to be more than anger and grief, and I believe that will extend past the suit and into how he treats Alfred, and his Bruce Wayne persona

So the point is that he's going about, interrogating people and thinking he's solving it but it's just because the Riddler is leading him along to get what he wants AND the Riddler even mocks him and Gordon for it. I like the character of this Batman. He still felt green, even after 2 years. One could argue "Wouldn't he have gotten better in 2 years as being Batman?"And I would say "Yes, but he was doing this with a certain mindset." His clothing his tactics his fighting style, it all screams rage and vengeance. It wasn't until later in the movie where he actually started seeing the positive impact in which he could apply himself to Gotham. It wasn't only until the end where he realized the negative impacts of what he was at the beginning of the movie, where he got done making sure that one guy would really miss eating solid foods, he said he was vengeance. And when this one guy who was also beaten by Batman at the end of the movie they asked who he was, and HE said vengeance. It was only after that instance where he realized the mindset of how he was doing this for the past 2 years was all wrong. Sometimes it's not enough to not do anything bad, sometimes there are days in which you HAVE to do good. Be the installation of fear, but also inspire hope. Then again, you could say that he DID inspire this guy of sorts to do what he did with some more help from The Riddler and fight for this cause, so what do I know.

But I’m super hyped for joker, I think if you were ever to do the darker aspects of the joker the psychotic crazy deranged joker we all know and love, then this will be the perfect film to do it, just the general atmosphere of everything.

I find your critique of Batman's character really interesting, in that I'm of the opposite mindset. This is the first live-action movie we've gotten which I thought really completely and fundamentally understood the character. Nolan got close, but he loved to cheat it in spots with stuff like, I'm not going to kill you, but I don't have to save you. I think this Batman is on a very specific journey, and he will wind up being the Batman you recognize who has to balance his three personas that all try to help Gotham in various ways. But the point here is that he is so completely obsessed with Batman he doesn't have anything else, and in doing so, isn't doing as much as he could. It is him struggling with the darkness inside him. The movie ends with him getting closer to finding that balance and being the Batman Gotham truly needs. As for the mythic feeling of Batman, I definitely don't get where you are coming from there. I thought this film nailed it far better then any other film. Things like characters staring into the shadows wondering if he is there, the shot of him illuminated from the car crash, all totally sold that larger then life persona he has been building. So yeah, I absolutely adored this film. It's easily my favorite Batman film, in large part because of how they handled the character here. It's the first film I thought totally got it.

Regarding Nolan, Dark Knight's Joker is absolutely amazing, but Batman, who is supposed to be this monolith of a character that is supposed to counter what Joker is about, really doesn't stand up to Joker. In the end, you are supposed to side with Batman, but in that movie, everyone sided with The Joker and it's almost like it's a Joker movie. That said its a masterpiece of a movie, but this movie understands Batman WAY better. Gives him a challenge and makes him rise as a monolithic figure, one that can fail and make mistakes, but one that will prevail in the end.

If you don't think the Nolan trilogy nailed every aspect then you just don't like his movies. But that doesn't mean its not an accurate interpretation of batman. Those movies showed Batman's genius and intuitiveness in the best way, by letting the events unfold and leaving you to make the connection. They were those movies that made you follow along, and that right there is master storytelling skills. I thought this did enough, but to say it was better the Batman begins or Dark Knight is a stretch. This felt more like a emo frat boy pretending to Batman, and the real one is actually yet to be seen lo

@@justindaniels411 Don't get me wrong, I adore the Nolan trilogy. The Dark Knight is one of my favorite films of all time. Until I saw this film, I absolutely assumed that would be the best Batman films ever got. I think Nolan has a clear understanding of what makes him such a compelling character. I just think there are little moments here and there throughout the trilogy where he likes to cheat and bend the rules. Stuff like him letting Ra's al Ghul die instead of saving him just doesn't sit right with my interpretation of the character. There wasn't a moment in this new film where I felt the rules were being cheated. The finale in particular really brought it all together for me and felt like the most complete interpretation of the character, portraying both his internal struggle and his starting to become something greater.

100% agree on you’re take. Batman isn’t really sold on his own mission yet for 90% of the movie. He’s just going out at night fighting because that’s how he deals with his grief, he doesn’t realize who he can be until his talk with Alfred really. Then we see him find his purpose and mission as Batman, not for vengeance but for the people of Gotham. Can’t wait to see how Matt reeves expands and grows Robs Batman/Bruce.

The character development in this movie moved me! I loved how it began with him leaving the man he saved on the floor because he was just there to fight and by the end he’s grown a soft spot for the people of Gotham, he has hope :)

Yeah loved, how he made eye contact with the kid and how he cared at the funeral and how he helped him at the end. Like he knew what it was like to lose his parents. To see Batman being compasionate was great!
