This Spanish Civil War mini history documentary was filmed & animated in Madrid. The Spanish Civil War is fascinatingly complex. That’s why I’ve decided to explain the Battle/Siege of Madrid between 1936 & 1939 using animation and original footage I shot in Madrid. To understand the two sides during the Spanish Civil War (the Nationalists and the Republicans), it helps to reduce the conflict down to the city level. I hope having it explained this way is helpful for you! Feedback welcome as always.

@williamcfox This video isn’t advertiser friendly! Thanks RU-vid! :/ For those who want to support: Please hit the notification bell if you want to be updated every time I post a deeply researched political & historical exploration. This video took me 150 hours of research, writing, animation, filming, and editing. If that’s something that appeals to you, hit that bell! I appreciate the support of my dedicated fans, without whom I would have given up a long time ago. -Will

Advertisers checklist a bunch of things that they don't want their ads appearing on, like war, political stuff, rape, hate speech, etc. And in turn RU-vid cuts the revenue of any videos that feature anything related to anything that's even been on a single advertiser's checklist.

How good is his Spanish? It does not sound too bad to me but Spanish is a second language to me. And even then it's Cuban Spanish so I don't know if the weird twang I hear is his bad Spanish or my colonial corruption of the language.
@derrengui
@derrengui 4 года назад
@@ieuanhunt552 he speaks good Spanish but he has an English American accent, for example when he says "fascismo" he pronounces it as "fashismo" in Spanish from Spain this is pronounced as "fasthismo" (as in "thick") in Latin America it'd sound similar to "fassismo" or "fas-sihmo" depending on the accent. But again for a non native speaker he's really good
@fresatx
@fresatx 3 года назад
@@ieuanhunt552 The lisp/ceceo is more or less confined to Spain. Using the lisp is neither proper nor improper but simply a dialect.. he does have English accented Spanish but the previous poster saying his Spanish is improper sin el ceceo is silly. Spanish speakers around the world dropped the lisp pretty quick. His Spanish sounds good to me. He will be understood and what else is there?

Man, I just moved Spain a couple of months ago and I can see how this events are still alive in the country. People are scared of politics and don't want to lean neither to the left nor to the right because of fears of being called republican or a "Facho". Yet those who are invested in politics are quite extreme. I've seen old men talking about how Franco was the best thing to ever happen to Spain but at the same time I've seen republican parades across the streets of Malaga. Is sad yet fascinating.
@RubenBenigno
@RubenBenigno 7 лет назад
facha* hahahaha, and yes, it's still present in the society, the actual spain is the directly resoult of the civil war, and of the 40 years of dictatorship, a 'democracy' ruled by the party that was created by franco's ministers and his dictatorship defensors, the left in spain, but, it's not the same that the left of the civil war, they are now more much moderated than before, and the right has been influenciated by the dictatorship, in the republic were people of right that were republicans, now this is impossible to imagine, all the rights support the kings (sorry for my english xd)

Sara Skywalker Even if Spanish Civil War may have been a tragic period in our history, it's not more "actual" than WW2 is for the rest of Europe or the US, for example (the Spanish Civil War is even older). In the early 1936 we were one of the richest country in the world and Europe. We passed a disastrous war that destroyed our country and then a dictatorship with no freedom in which economy didn't rise as well as the democratic countries (as Japan or Western Germany that were destroyed during WW2 but quickly recovered) were doing at that moment. However, the other option we had then, the "democratic" republic (which would soon fall to the URSS interests in a couple of years for sure, maybe if the civil war never happened we may have fought in WW2 as communists) wasn't way better. Do not pay attention to those who tell you than one side was much better than the other. Both of them were bad and both committed crimes, even if the Republic was legitimately democratically elected, it fell in extremisms too. There's was not good option then. But we recovered from that as time passed, even if we did it too late (since democracy was reintroduced in 1975). Maybe we are not the globally powerful country we could have been, we aren't Germany or France, but we are relatively close, we are a modern and prosperous democratic nation. Nowadays people's political majority opinion are much more moderate (even if some radical parties has risen a bit as it has actually happened with Trump in the US or Le Pen in France, but here they've still not won, but that's not comparable as the situation of true radicalism we had in 1936). Actually our differences are forgiven. I consider myself a centrist and I have friends who vote for the left and for the right, and we discuss it respectfully as any other countries' people may do ;)

Sorry, but what you wrote there is a big lie wirten by a spanish centrist (so part of the power). The dictatorship and the civil war are very on spains day to day because the same people is governing us now as they did with the dictatorship. Same things are valued as the most important for the nation (as the national unity). The only posible solution for spain should be some kind of nuremberg trials (as to not have policemen that did alot of tortures with medals and invited to parties in police oficces) or a complete desitegration of the spanish state into the nations that exist inside itself

I know you sort of mentioned the presence of foreign volunteer troops, but I feel is should be noted. Over 1200 Canadian volunteers went over to fight for the Republicans (Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion ). This was even after it was made illegal to go fight in Spain(Foreign enlistment Act). The would be allied governments wanted to stay out of the war as much as they could, while Hitler and Mussolini got a testing ground for WW2. The lack of involvement showed how willing democratic governments were willing to appease fascist ones. I think this participation is a fascinating part of Canadian history...

I meen, fighting for fascism obviously is bad, but this shouldn‘t meen fighting for communism is the solution. Both ideologies brought a similar amount of death and destruction to the world. So I think it‘s good for democratic countries to don‘t support any side.

Even when they banned all minority languages to the point where my people across the border in France were afraid of the secret police taking them away.

@@gabrielkowalski3086 You have no idea of what you are talking about. The Spanish civil war was a war between a legit elected governement by the people and some fascists (with the help of their fascists friends) who couldn't admit they had lost the elections. Also, comparins communism with fascism is a fool idea... The 100M deaths story has been proved to be false. The first country I ever visited in Europe was Spain as my sister was at the university in Salamanca. We toured around the heart of Spain, Madrid, Toledo and Avila, and also took a jaunt to Barcelona and Sitges, visiting just before the Olympic Games around 1990. Later,I had to return and see the south of Spain, Andalusia, Cordoba, 21:45 Granada and Sevilla, la Dona. But it’s only when I moved to Portugal two years ago, that I really started to see Spain more completely and intimately as I took several car trips all over Spain with my copilot, my dog, Sadie, like Don Quixote and Pancho Villa for the Auto age. I got to see cities that are usually off of the tourist map, and tiny little towns of the Extremadura, the forgotten province, that were jewels and treasures of the Roman Empire, and some as ancient as the pyramids. or showed off a medieval glory, cities and towns like Merida and Badajoz and Cadiz, Zafra, Antequera, Valladolid, Ronda and Caceres. I was stunned. And as I watched this video about one of the most horrible wars, a war of ideology that was literally take no prisoners, when the prisoners were your brothers and cousins, possibly your son, or daughter, the reality set in and I cried, certain Spanish people never want to have to go through such a Hell again, followed by 35 years of fascist rule, supported by the Roman Catholic Church, who also supported fascism in Portugal. This is a warning to Americans what extreme ideology can do, and anybody who entertains the idea of taking arms against one’s brother even if he’s in a soldiers uniform, or a paramilitary uniform, should watch this video. Few will survive, and all will be wounded seriously, and that wound will be intergenerational and carry on for a long time. One can inherit the trauma of war, ask any child of the holocaust. This is an awesome film and I’m going to share and recommend it to those i care about in America and in Portugal. That Spanish people are writing to you saying that it was fair representation says a lot.

Outstanding! I lived for years in Madrid and had little idea of most of this - you’ve really brought the history to life! Now I can’t wait to get back to visit all these places again! Thanks Btw it’d be awesome to see a similar video about some of the other battles like Guadalajara / Alcalá, Segovia, El Mazuco / Sierra del Cuera ...

I only just found your channel - but i've been watching for a few hours (instantly subscribed). This video was epic - i loved the way you made it and i found it very exciting to watch :-) I've always felt that the Spanish Civil War gets forgotten about in history, but this was a great way to tell a part of the story.

+Mads Hinrichsen hours?! Wow. Thank you for taking that time and watching the videos. That's really exciting to hear. And yeah. Having lived a couple years in Madrid, it was easy to become passionate about the subject and make the video something special (to me at least)

Hi Junkie. I have been living in Madrid for the past 5 years studying in the Ciudad Universitaria, this video has brought me tears of thinking what could have been, as a spaniard it is still very difficult to address this conflict objectively but the savagery and bloodbath that took place between HERMANOS is something that should never happen again. The wound is still not closed, I still feel it (even though I am 23 years old) it was a conflict with so much hatred that almost 100 years have passed and the people are still holding grudges. Thank you for bringing this, keep up the good work!

War is always a sad subject, but something about a civil war is so horrific. Like you said, it's always brother killing brother. I hope the Spanish people will learn and grow from that horrible time. If you don't mind me asking, what are you studying there? I considered doing a teaching program there.

I majored in aerospace engineering (right next to the medicine faculty that you showed) up in the hill. I do not know your major but I strongly recommend Madrid, specially Universidad Complutense (UCM, if you want to study humanities)and Universidad Autonoma (UAM, to me better, specially if you are thinking of pure sciences). Unfortunately I studied in Politecnica (UPM) so I cannot provide you with any more data apart from engineering (which is the best one in Spain!! e.e)

+Tomás Urena I'm actually about to start my masters back in the ol USA (I'll be doing political communication). But a few years ago, I'd considered doing a program at complutense. Anyways, thanks for sharing and have a good day. Are you working in your field now?

Right now I am finishing a masters degree in the UK, I hope I find something, specially in gas turbines (which is my field of expertise). Unfortunately in Spain the jobs are very badly payed and my vision is international. In the US though, they only contract nationals. But who knows. Anyway keep up the good work, it is one of the best on youtube with my other personal favourite Visualpolitik and everyone can see the amount of effort that you put in each of your videos, hope you reach 100k and when you are around you have someone in here to have a nice Cafe con Leche in plaza mayor ;)
