The Battle of Hoth from a Soldier's Perspective [Legends]

No one ever complained about the cold on Hoth. We never felt it. Even though we were blinded by blizzards, we could see the final end of the Rebellion in our blaster sights. Was it only a mirage? Perhaps. But on that day, on that planet, our blood ran hot with dreams of victory, melting the ice that stood in our way.

That rebel had some serious balls to spit on Vader.

When I was a little girl, my dad would often tell me the story of him participating in this battle as a Snow Trooper. He would tell me the hardships he and his fellas went through, the cold of the planet, how cool he looked with a blaster, etc. Because I was little, I believed him and thought it would be cool to join the Empire. I later learned that it was all fiction, though, but it didn't matter, because in my book he was a really cool guy. Anyways, this is a nice memory from my childhood and I wanted to share it here. You should have mentioned that Jobin was the son of Mon Mothma in the video and how she received his message before the Battle of Endor.

Probably one of my favorite scenes of all time in Star Wars is when we get the shot of the Rebel soldiers retreating and the AT AT walkers in the distance firing upon them. It was so beautifully shot, and it gave a real sense of how powerful the Empire was. I hope we get something similar with the First Order in the new trilogy.

Jobin is a hero and has become one of my favorite Rebel soldier!

As the Rebels fled, the 501st gathered around a burning bunker and let out a cheer that shook the stars. The Rebellion was done. The Death Star was being rebuilt bigger than ever. Order had finally returned to the galaxy, and no small part due to the efforts of the fighting men of the 501st.

What’s sad is despite their spirited defense of Echo Base. If you really think about it. This incredible sacrifice was little more than a delaying action. I’m sure many in the upper ranks knew most of those troops were not going to be coming back.

Never realised how big the battle of hoth was in the film. I always thought it was just a small thing but in actual fact it had huge impacts

This made me realize how much I really want an anthology film based on Hoth. Maybe a type of war/survival style movie where it opens with the battle of Hoth and then follows a squad of rebel soldiers left behind as they try to find a way off the planet while surviving against the climate, creatures and pursuing imperials.

The emotions evoked from a simple comic shows that we as humans care for one another.

That 501st journal reading brought a tear to my eye. Of course that Rebel's story was touching as well, but the fact that I fought with the 501st from Geonosis to the assault on Hoth in BF2 turned this story to one of victory

I love the way these stories are treated like history and like a teacher teaching students about long lost wars in space, its so mezmorising

I loved this comic so much. It was so emotional and the fact that he was Mon mothmas son is even better

These kinds of comics are some of the best to me because we don't just see some brave rebel leaders where everything is goes their way. We see a normal everyday soldier who willingly entered the Rebellion knowing that they could die. Their story doesn't always end with a happy note it can end with dispare, sadness, vengance, and sacrifice.

It would be better if Disney had a campaign of slowly choosing novels or comics that don't interfere with their new timeline and canonizing them individually, instead of trying to rush through in 3 years what the EU did in 30 years. Case in point: Death Troopers. That was a pretty good novel, doesn't interfere with the timeline, and has already been referenced in Canon.

Cool! Will you do this for other battles? Like, the battle of geonosis from a clone troopers point of view? Or order 66 from a Jedi's point of view?

Quick question, was the information (or parts of it) for the Imperial viewpoint taken from the Battlefront II campaign? I remember the final mission being the battle of Hoth, and the narrator saying things about the battle that are similar to what was mentioned here.

DUDE! Learning Jobin's story was epic! Love things like this that just expand the stuff I've grown up with since I was a kid. Oh sure, the films focus on the main heroes and events, but if you want to learn other smaller stories and whatnot during, before, or after those events? Well, star wars has got you covered!

Personally, as a Star Wars fan, I reject Disney's new cannon. The Legends stories are so much deeper and simply better. Jeez, I really wish Disney would have taken the time to go through and familiarize themselves with the lore rather than simply tossing all the cool stuff out and replacing it with shallow crap for a few quick bucks.

I doubt I could ever feel sympathy for people wanting to avenge the destruction of a planet-killing superweapon. No one working on that thing was innocent. It's always nice to see the other side, but I still want them to lose.

I have never considered the battle of Hoth a slaughter. Echo base was meant to be evacuated on short notice. The thin screen of rebel troops defending the base did just what they were supposed to, as general Rieekan said: 'We gotta hold 'em until all transports are away'.

I just now noticed that the Battle of Hoth is almost a look-a-like battle of World War II. The trenches and massive tactics of the enemies. But instead of attacks of gruesome and brutality, it had freezing temperatures and unfair military technologies.

That was a brave Rebel to spit on Vader's Face.

I love how similar they made it feel towards WW1 and its trenches.

Wow, I really enjoyed listening to this video. , The is my Favorite Battle seen from all of the Movies and have recreated it several times in Mocks and Dioramas in the past.

This would be great to translate on film, if the battle from the rebel soldier’s perspective is done like in “saving private ryan” with its opening when US forces stormed Normandy. In this case I’d like to see scenes where the rebel soldiers were fighting and trying to repel the attacking AT-ATs and advancing imperial troops, blood, guts, dead bodies, dismembered rebel soldiers everywhere as the imperial assault continues. As imperial forces advance and eliminate defensive rebel posts, you could see the rebels frantically scrambling, falling back from one defensive position to the next still trying to heroically hold back the assault until they get to the ion cannon station which would be the rebels last stand. This scene would be similar actually to the last battle in saving private ryan, only difference there would be no one to save the rebels that remained on Hoth as imperial forces eliminated the rebel forces one by one, inch by inch. This scene would be awesome in a darth Vader movie.

80s awesomeness! Wedge was a legend. Survived two death star attacks and took out a an AT-AT. Total baller.

The novel: Star Wars Battlefront explains alot about other stations near echo stations. This gives you another point of view (also that of a rebel trooper). The novel is a good read and the second novel will come out shortly.

It's things like this that make me know legends will always be canon in my heart

In canon, there is a book called Star Wars Battlefront: Twilight Company. It is a good book following Sergeant Namir in the rebel alliance's 61 infantry unit, Twilight Company. He visits High Command, just in time for the Battle of Hoth. It is a good book, I recommend you read it!

Poor Mon Mothma (she's the Rebel trooper Jobin's mother, by the way; I know, quite a shocker). At least she finally passed away before the Yuuzhan Vong showed up the ravage the galaxy. That would have been too much for her. Meanwhile, her Alt-universe counterpart sure is incompetent.

I remember back in star wars battlefront 2, the trooper of the 501st who talks about their "blood running hot" has the voice of a clone... Thinking that inexperienced rebels went up against veteran clones from one of the most successful clone legion really is horrifying.

I saw this in another comment down below, but Jobin was the SON of Mon Mothma. Let that sink in. This guy was just a corporal but could've become a general within the Alliance himself.

I’ve always wanted to see Star Wars from a simple soldier’s perspective. Seeing how incredible the Jedi and the Sith were, using these behemoth war machines in battle, how much the war really costs in exorbitant money and lives. Star Wars is a huge galaxy, which makes a single soldier feel really quite small.
