When we think of the 1940 campaign in the west, we often think about the battles for fortress Eben-Emael, Sedan and Dinant. In today’s video, we will take a closer look at a forgotten battle: The Battle of Leuven. Leuven was shortly defended by both the Belgians and the British. Initial German attacks were repulsed, but could the allies hold on to Leuven? Find out more in this video!

What you can tell is that vast majority of buildings were rebuilt in Leuven. Only few of them can be seen with original or semioriginal bricks. The city looks quite new -construction wise-.

Looks like AD hadn't read the comments yet, so I'm gonna start ranting 😂 First off AD, I finished watching most of your videos and I loved them. I love tank battles in particular so a lot of your videos are among my favourites. Your voice is also very pleasant to the ear and relaxing, and I was surprised to find out that you're not a native English speaker. I'm not either, so I usually have some trouble understanding other non native English speakers.. but your English is pretty much perfect imo. And I have a request, let's say.. to be honest, this was another subscriber's request and I'm repeating it in case you read this comment.. can you make a video about the third and fourth battles in/around Kharkov, in 1943? Apparently, there's a lot of footage from both sides. Aww too late, he already hearted most comments 😕 maybe next video

Thank you very much! I'm very pleased to see that you're enjoying the content! As for a Kharkov video, I know I should make one but, I still need to start gathering sources, books,... I'm currently working on several other projects at the moment. Next week (hopefully) I'll be in Normandy filming footage for a few videos, while a few weeks back I went to the Ardennes to film footage for several Kampfgruppe Peiper-themed videos. So, I would say, do stay tuned for that!

My father was a soldier in the 2nd battalion of the Royal Ulster Rifles and fought in the battle of Leuven. He was severely wounded and never really spoke about his experience in his war service.Sixty years later his grandson ( my son ) graduated from the Katholic University of Leuven. I had no idea my father was there during the war as I only researched his war records a couple of years ago. I visited my son a few times and wished I had known their history.

G'day, Yay Team ! Some of those Cathedrals were so overdecorated they seem almost gaudy...! The version of the story we got hereabouts was that Belgium was so careful to avoid "provoking" Germany into invading that they effectively made it impossible for France & Britain to do anything to help when the inevitable Attack finallt came - because the BEF had to wait in France and wait till Germany picked their moment - and then "Run towards the sound of Gunfire", madly trying to race the Germans to meet up and fight each other wherever they met each other in the middle of Belgium. So, it was a "Defence" which was foredoomed to be as ineffective as it was possible to imagine - short of running up a Bedsheet & scattering Rose-Petals for the Panzers to roll over (!). So, the British Empire's Media has tended to kind of gloss over Belgium & concentrate on how wicked was the bombing of Rotterdam and how Dunkirk was a miraculous "Victory" if one but squinted at it for long enough (rather like the way in which Oz dreams on endlessly about our great Glorious and VICTORIOUS 1915 invasion of Turkey - whereinat the Very CLEVEREST part was when we ran away in the middle of the night.., after only 9 months of gloriously running up a Cliff face into massed Rifle & Machinegun fire, Grenades & Mortars, while capturing about 5.7 square centimetres of Turkey for every one of the 15,000 Casualties incurred...!). So it's good to see a bit of detail as to what actually went on...; thankyou for posting this. Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !
@loetzcollector466
@loetzcollector466 3 года назад
Re the cathedrals. Since it was for god they went all out. Also, back in that time it was "a thing" for cities to try to outdo each other so they became more and more elaborate.

@@TheAceDestroyer hehe, what's to decline about, I was not trying to sell anything :) As long as you have a copy its good. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I did. Those bunkers of Bridgehead Ghent are practically in my backyard, which sparked my interest in the Second World War back when I was a kid. I would love to see someone making something out of it. In my opinion the German invasion of 1940 is too much told from a British perspective, while the Belgian Army did more than his bit try to defend our country. So again, good job on what you did so far, I love it! And I would maybe one day love to see your opinion on these topics. Feel free to contact if you would need some more info, cheers! :)

Explain: Why are the Belgians not defend their country? They are retreating in the face of the enemy?
@TimmieVD
@TimmieVD 3 года назад
In the defensive plans that were made in case of a German invasion (the Gamelin-Dyle Plan) the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and French army would swing into Belgium to hold a part of the defensive line. Between Koningshooikt and Wavre there was a strong Belgium bunker position (the pillboxes in this video are part of that KW-line). The Belgians were responsible for the sector from Antwerp to Leuven, the BEF from Leuven (including) to Wavre ( users.skynet.be/fa101291/operaties/fall-gelb/Foto/map3-g.jpg ). That's the reason why - once the BEF arrived - Belgians handed over their positions to the British forces. But at the moment this battle raged (the 14-16th of May) it became clear to the Allies that the Germans crossed the Meuse-river at Sedan and Dinant and the KW-line could be attacked from the rear. That's why the strong KW-line was given up with almost no fight and both the British and Belgian forces started retreating towards the Leie-river.
