(This question appts to all that reads this very imperative comment)• Also, why do think this cream colored square chose not to side with his red colored square compatriot? Wherever I look I get the basic three answers one finds everywhere; what do you think? (Most importantly, however is the ever pressing initial question: it’s vital).

My thoughts exactly. And we need another Caesar in our age. How weird it is to love someone dead for 2000 years.. And yeah, i think if Caesar wouldve ruled for another few decades he would have restored true democracy. But no, he had to die like the rock star he is at the height of his power....

@@archdukefranzferdinand567 you might be right, sadly. Just watched the new civilis video and caesar comes off as a jerk. But romes Republican system before wasnt exactly great either, and I've always had the impression caesar was a populist. Meaning he did things the populace, instead of the monied elite, wanted. I still think we need reform today from someone like him. And since the repubs have stacked the supreme court etc, something like this might come to pass. I kind of feel like Caesar's "At Munda I fought for my life" quote was sort of a hyperbolic way of him memorializing his friend. Like, he was a tyrant and everything, but from how Caesar would conduct himself militarily, it strikes me as a quote that was intended to give high honor more to Labienus than to praise himself. Maybe I just like the sentimentality and tragic components of that thought though.
@RenegadeVile
@RenegadeVile 4 года назад
Caesar didn't generally speak ill of his foes anyway, politically or otherwise. Only those he really, really had severe grievances with. Maybe in private he talkes more shit, but publically, being respectful of enemies played into his policy of clemency towards opponents in the civl war. After all, it's reasonable to think he would not have killed Pompey and instead brought him back to Rome.

Julius is going to start executing people in Rome like a maniac, Brutus Snow is going to stab him for it to save what's left of the republic, and maybe the world. Octavian (which wasn't Octavian anymore, he was now Augusts) having done nothing noteworthy until that point took the throne. The republic was never restored, Rome turned into an empire with brothels instead of ports. Cleopatra ruled Egypt as the queen in the south that no one gave a shit about. The soldiers that served under Julius were not important enough to the story to have their own ending. They never found anything west to Europe, America isn't in their story at all. Overall the story of Rome was thrilling and interesting, but they just decided to finish it too fast through Julius, a well-loved character to madness and treason, and finish the entire story like it was never built-up. They teleported the characters from Rome to Africa to the Middle East to Spain while the first season gave us years of focus around Rome and Gall. And the Lebinus arc - from the moment Julius marched to Rome, his "equal" Lebinus was out to get him. Lebinus is coming they said... He died in 1 fight by not watching the enemy jump at him from behind. We're making a petition for a re-write of the story. To tell God that this ending doesn't do justice to the rest of the story.

I never understood how people could claim the conquest of Gaul was Ceaser's greatest achievement. One thing that makes it difficult to judge generalship through history is you rarely ever get an apples to apples comparison. Ceaser vs Gual is a conflict with drastically different experience, resources, and really just about everything. Ceaser in the Roman Civil War is multiple battles between armies that are designed, trained, and equipped similarly, where one of the few differences in each conflict is the quality of leadership on the battlefield. It's those fights, the fact that he won against other experienced and respected leaders, often with fewer troops and a worse position, that prove Ceaser deserves his reputation.

We remember the Gallic Wars better than the civil war probably because Caesar wrote about them himself in order to propagandize his victories. He would have had a harder time aggrandizing himself by pointing to the times he fought fellow Romans--as the video on his triumphs pointed out--so they aren't as well remembered by us now because Caesar (and his successors' later propagandists, I would assume) wouldn't brag about them. And also because we're all map painters at heart, and Gaul is a rather huge chunk of land to add to the Roman map.

I think there's a good chance that Caesar and Labienus are still on even ground when you include both quality and quantity in an equation. Let's say if Labienus raise 10 legions (judging from numbers of red squares), I think all of them are new while Caesar's entire army are mostly experienced or veterans nearing their end of 'tour'. I think that's why Caesar reacted and moved fast as possible before Labienus finished training those new legions to standard Roman level of battle effectiveness. I think that's why Caesar went for slugfest, gambling on quality while knowing that Labienus would simply won't fall for any of his maneuvers or tricks as both have fought together for years. It paid off as flanks defeated their counterparts.

It would have been rather difficult to conquer Gaul as a corpse laying on the banks of the Sabis. Caesar might have had a knack for bouncing back from situations that would likely ended the career of any other commander, but rising from the grave was likely beyond him...

I actually wish HC went back and covered the gap in their period between the Second Punic War and Cicero. There's a ton of interesting stuff there, not only militarily, but sociopolitically, which is the main reason I love HC (it doesn't only cover battles, but also the historical context). Stuff like expansion into Iberia and Greece, rising inequality due to influx of slaves and loss of land by small farmers, the Gracci brothers, Marius and Sulla. All this sets the context which eroded republicanism and allowed strongmen like Caesar to emerge in the first place.

No it wasn't really, after the death of the roman middle class and the rise of the land owning aristocrat class and mass slave system, which caused the reforms of Marius and the armies of proletariats more loyal to their general than rome, the republic was doomed. Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Caesar... eventually it had to happen, so it's incorrect, the further you advance in the timeline the less likely it was for the republic to survive.

It's indicative of Caesar's superior military instinct that he gets into action right away, with the few troops he has. Not wait and raise more troops like Pompey and others did. Because by the time those troops would be ready for battle, the moment could already have passed.

Labienus is that hero you've been using in so many fights in the main campaign that later on unexpectedly but logically becomes an enemy and disappears for a while, then after you defeated A LOT of your other enemies he shows up and threatens everything you've gained, and you are so hyped for the battle with him and it's super intense but you push throught it, and when he perishes you feel no joy but the bittersweet peace.

Another awesome video from my favourite RU-vidr. I always wondered what happened to Labienus. Now I know thank you👍 Wish he'd said more about Caesar's March to Spain. I read they did 1500 miles in less than a month. So if that's true and they did 1500 miles in say 27 days, that's an amazing 55 miles a day. In sandles, carrying everything and building a defensive structure at the end of each day. I walked 100 miles in 6 days and it almost broke me, my knees and feet!
