Was enjoying the video until you started throwing your political opinions at us the end that's a shame and completely unnecessary.

I didn't think it was controversial to say that Imperial Japan fucking sucked. Ask anybody from China, Korea or Vietnam what they think about the "glorious empire of Japan" and I guarantee what they'll say is far worse than what I said in this video. War is perhaps the most political thing to have ever existed. To brush over that is a disservice to the millions of people who died at the hands of the Japanese less than a century ago.

@@golfshores97 Yeah I've gotta say I'm pretty tired of people insisting gun videos be "not political" when talking about a world war where 55+ million people died because of the rise of fascism. Like, an entire war was fought and won because the global far right was fucking terrible. I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen some wehraboo in the comments of a Kar98k gun video say that they wish the Axis won and get like 50 upvotes, and anytime somebody says that the Soviets should have been exterminated because they were """communists""" (despite being largely responsible for crushing Nazi Germany) they get like 1000 upvotes. Right-wingers invading every gun video with their toxic politics need to fuck off. There's a difference between being apolitical and getting mad when somebody (gasp!) says that Imperial Japan was not, in fact, cool and good.

really informative, quite jealous of those family heirlooms my only suggestion would be to invest in an action camera and head-rig to mount it on, so when comparing firing the gun(s) in video games to RL we can compare the 'view' so to speak.
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 4 года назад
Haha thanks. I've considered those GoPros and whatnot, it's just like a $400 purchase to get a view of the gun that isn't even technically looking down the iron sights (since the camera is above the eyes). Someday I'll get one, but it's pretty low on my priority list tbh.

Came here from Reddit. I liked the video. Might want to give people a heads up about the last ditch Type 99s. They are rough in terms of fit and finish often with rough machining and hastily applied or entirely absent finishes. Mine doesn't have an adjustable rear sight, but rather a hastily cut (or if they did it by hand with a file, not so hastily) peep sight. The knurling on the safety isn't there. It also has a wooden butt plate nailed on. Most critically though, lots of them are not safe to shoot. Metallurgy and heat treatment was iffy and touching off a full power 7.7mm cartridge could make it explode in your face. Oddly enough, my last ditch type 99 still has the chrysanthemum on the receiver.
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 4 года назад
Thanks. I've heard some conflicting things about the safety of last ditch Type 99s but the modern consensus seems to be that the vast majority are perfectly safe to shoot as long as the user doesn't overload it the ammo. They only really go kaboom if you use the smoothbore training rifles. The standard infantry ones look a bit rough like you said, but I don't the manufacturers skimped on the pressure bearing components much. Of course any time anybody buys an old gun it's best to get them checked out. Especially since virtually all of the rifles have mismatched bolts that could cause headspacing issues.
@DriveCarToBar
@DriveCarToBar 4 года назад
@@geoechidna Interesting. I'd heard that the real issue was heat treat, which can be hard for a smaller workshop to get right. That's the issue that most older guns, like old revolvers, have with modern ammo. 45 Colt for example can be loaded to approach some of the modern magnum cartridges, but if you try to fire it in a vintage Colt Single Action Army, you can damage the gun or worse, have a catastrophic cylinder failure. An updated, modern cylinder and some new parts in the lockwork would allow you to shoot modern ammo in an old gun...but then it's not vintage anymore. Same story with the last ditch Type 99s. I guess I could take a file to some of the parts on mine and see what kind of hardness I get out of it. A decently hard rifle would indicate that it has had some heat treatment and the alloy of the steel is at least safe to shoot, assuming it took the heat treatment. I do have a really nice Type 44 that is a real pleasure to shoot except for the ammo cost.
@DriveCarToBar
@DriveCarToBar 4 года назад
@@geoechidna I do know that the short length of pull on the stock is a big cause for complaint among us larger framed westerners. A slip on recoil pad that adds an extra inch or so of length, makes them a whole lot nicer to shoot. I'm going to do some more research though about shooting my later rough Type 99. I'd actually like to shoot it if I could. The fear of trashing a mum-intact rifle has always been the biggest concern with it. It's one of the few things I got from my grandfather when he passed on and I'd hate to destroy it.
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 4 года назад
Yeah if it's an heirloom Type 99 last ditch I'd definitely exercise the same caution that you are. If you're really worried and have some disposable income, I'd take it to a gunsmith and have them check it out. They should know if it's safe or not. Hope you're eventually able to shoot it! :D

The type 99 had the strongest action in ww2 and a great rifle. The down side is ammo, its out there but very expensive. I happen to have the long version of the type 99. They only made a few thousand of the type 99 long rifle and i happen to find one, boy i was lucky. The one you have is the type 99 short rifle they are great guns i see them around. No mine is just like it but missing the dust cover,aircraft sights and the monopod everything else is there. I think its a little bit longer than the Mosin Nagant 91/30 its long. I seen your other video about the No4 Mk1 Enfield thumbs up for that. I am more into Enfields than anything else i own 8 Lee Enfield rifles.The sad thing is sometime in the future i will stop getting them because the price is just not worth it. I know a few area's that will still give good deals but they will not be around forever lol. These old guns are awesome but very worn down and beat. I seen some with shot out bores or badly pitted and they still ask top dollar. I see mostly Enfields, Mausers,Mosin 91/30 and the SKS, they are common in my area but some people want to much. There was a guy asking $1000 for a Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 and he couldn't move it for 4 and a half years until he finally sold it. Who ever got that rifle got burned i can get one around $300 easy lol

The sight is the same sights on the "Last Ditch" models. They changed them to a peep.sight.
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 3 года назад
Judging from DICE’s previous actions that wasn’t their intention. The in-game model is a midwar variant that still has the tangent sight with elevation slider. DICE embellishes a lot of how these sights actually look because the “IRL” sights are somewhat harder to use and the BF community tends to whine very hard about them and refuse to use them. To meet players halfway, DICE often open up the sights on these guns past what you could actually see. The M1 has a giant rear aperture that was bigger than any rifles’ in reality and the open sights rifles like the Kar98k and Krag have massively deep V and U-notches that are much easier to use than the real thing. BF1 has the same thing. This wasn’t a case about using a last-ditch sight; the Type 99’s aperture hole in BFV was widened purely for playability.

@geoechidna
@geoechidna 3 года назад
I mean I didn't say they were "inaccurate", but most are 3 MOA+ rifles, par for the course during WWII for service rifles. The K31 and 96 Mausers are way more precise. I researched Type 99s for years and being tack drivers is not something I've ever read about one of these. The Japanese didn't even specially select them for accuracy when making sniper rifles. They're reasonably accurate for their time but nothing special. Still great guns, though.

You have a fantastic looking rifle that comes with significant family history. Treasure it. Glad to hear your grandfather made it back home. It looks like he took care of it and thank God it didn't get sporterized! If you don't mind me asking, did the rifle always not have a cleaning rod? I know the bolts got mismatched, the dust covers lost when they were brought over, but I see a lot of Arisakas without cleaning rods for some reason and I can't find out why this is even on non, last ditch rifles.
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 4 года назад
Thanks! As for the cleaning rod being missing, Ian from Forgotten Weapons said in one of his videos that the reality was that the Arisakas were all pretty much completely disassembled and thrown into a box on a ship at the end of the war. When time came to actually go home, many soldiers just took a partly assembled rifle. That's why dust covers, monopods and AA sights as well a cleaning rods are often missing.

@@geoechidna I wonder if it isn't the same for all rifles and depends on who brought them or what ship, etc. For example, mine has the screws staked and they have clearly never moved since being being assembled (though the previous owner very clearly tried with inappropriate means, much to my dismay). I hear a lot of different stories as to what was done with these rifles and I have to wonder if there simply was no standard method of transport and may have differed even from ship to ship for all I know. In regards to the monopod and anti aircraft sight, they were mostly omitted on most new rifles from 1943 to 1945. This is especially evident on the so called "Last Ditch" Arisakas which only featured a plain iron sight. The upper handguard and even the Chrisanthemum on the safety was also omitted. I have a Type 99 made around 1944 that is very much spartan in appearance but still fires quite well. It's also surprisingly accurate despite all the cut corners.

Yeah, but most of the functional rifles would have still had them even by the end of the war. My guess is DICE either just got lazy on either their research or wasn’t really pressed for time. Most Type 99s on the collector’s market have these things missing as well.

Yeah it’s the milsurp curse. When stuff is super common people tend to be rough with them or modify them. People are finally starting to realize these things aren’t cheap garbage, so hopefully the era of butchering these things is over now that they’re worth actual money.

I thought the game did quite a good job with how the rear sight looks, at least in reference to how the human eye adjusts to the sights. How the camera captures the sight picture is not at all how the human eye captures it.
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 4 года назад
I see what you're saying but it's still way too thin. I just went back and checked; even with how the human eye creates a ghost ring it's still far thinner on both the model and when aiming down the sights in BFV than it is IRL.
@ArnhemKnight88
@ArnhemKnight88 4 года назад
@@geoechidna It'd definitely be better if the ring was made blurry in the game, as it would be in real life... but that would appease the gamer crowd so well, which is why most rear sights are much more open compared to their real life counterparts. It gets to look sharp, and be open lol. Honestly, the only game I've ever seen do it right are the old Brothers in Arms games on PS2 and Xbox.
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 4 года назад
@@ArnhemKnight88 I agree, every time I think about mostly-realistic shooting mechanics in a WWII game I think of Brothers in Arms for the PS2, XB, and PC. Aiming was really fucking hard in that game, but that's how it kind of is. Hell Let Loose is also a pretty good approximation of realistic shooting mechanics. I haven't played since they updated the ballistics model, but its supposedly even better now. I absolutely understand why DICE modeled sights like they did, but honestly I think gamers would adapt pretty fast to "realistic" sight pictures. Gamers often spend hundreds of hour of their lives playing BF games; they could handle it. I guarantee using correctly modeled open sights in a video game would still be easier than IRL.

What stripper clips are you using? My yugo clips will not work in my type 99
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 4 года назад
I'm using Swedish Mauser clips, which work perfectly in the Type 99, M1903, and in general most non-98 pattern rifles of that era. The 98 clips (german, yugo, etc) are too small for most of these things sadly. Swedish Mauser clips are extremely smooth with the Type 99 in particular.

Props to you for actually knowing the bit about the dust cover. Men issued rifles with dust covers usually kept them, and they don't rattle at all when mounted properly. I think the monopod, AA sights, and dust cover being quickly axed when Japan shifted to ease-of-production Type 99 models one the war started helped contribute to this myth, as many in the later year would be found having never been issued with covers.
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 3 года назад
Yeah wartime production simplifications, postwar disassembly during transport back the the States and veterans just throwing the things away or losing them over the years are all reasons why Type 99s are not often found with dust covers. It’s pretty infuriating how often people repeat the myth that Japanese soldiers (that were part of the strictest military in the world) would discard them because they didn’t feel like it; nah, they’d get their asses beat by their COs. Same with the M1 pong myths, once one guy says something 50 people on the internet become doctorate-level experts on the subject lol. I think only lately have the major myths been getting more pushback.
