The Gewehr 98 was a bolt-action rifle was designed by Peter Paul Mauser and adopted by the German military in 1898. It was considered to be the ultimate evolution of the Mauser action and even today most commercial bolt-action rifles derive their bolt design from the Gewehr 98. It was strong, robust, and smooth, and was a master class of rifle design. Most nations on earth ended up buying, licensing, or otherwise ripping off Mauser designs, and they were the most common rifles in the world until the advent of the AK.
The Battlefield 1 depiction of the G98 might not be amazingly realistic, but the weapon in-game is satisfying to use and is a highly effective weapon for the Scout class.
