....the Grand National of 1977....as covered by the BBC....and Rummy completes his hat-trick.......in comprehensive style.......what a record.....3 wins and 2 seconds in 5 runs....no doubt the King of Aintree.....
Never get tired of seeing this. The greatest of them all. He jumped those fences tremendously well. He clearly loved Aintree. Even when leading the parade for all these years after you could see he knew where he was. The place lit him up. Will never ever forget him. What an inspiration he was.....No words are fit enough to describe him and the memories he has given us
@@mattday8208 Liverpool quite rightly reveres Bill Shankly (One of the truly Great Managers, Characters and Humans!)and the Beatles of course! .But Southport has it's own version of Pegasus!.."Red Rum" the Legend!
The magnificent Red Rum.So brave and fantastic jumper.Churchtown Boy was going really well and Rummy looked like he'd given all he could but one slight mistake at the second last and Rummy put 15 lengths between him and Churchtown Boy.It gets better every time I watch it.
I just watched the greatest grand national horse of all time once more ..I'm a grown man and remember visiting my dad in hospital dying of cancer with his radio shouting come on Rummie..still cry everytime I watch that race
I know right, this was the first time i have watched it since my Dad passed and when he jumped that last fence i have never heard a crowd so loud at a race course they literally roared him on, and i can still see my Dad running round the lounge going nuts! Beautiful memories but what a horse for me i dont think there will ever be another.👍🐴🐴🐴
Laura O Brien Hi Laura, yes if it had been on this year Tiger roll would be trying to win it 3 years in a row but who knows he might be back next year not sure yet. They did do the 2020 virtual Grand national and he came 4th what a great horse though!
@@lauraobrien5686 Tiger Roll is a fantastic little horse in the mould of Rummy, but I doubt even he could have achieved what the greatest Red Rum did over those momentous fences all those years ago.
My favorite moment in sports history. But you cannot beat the commentary which sums it all up. "The 12 year old RedRum coming along in great style... The crowd willing him along. You've never heard the likes of it at Liverpool..." It is fitting that they buried Red Rum at the finish line at Aintree. Legend.
Every time I watch Red Rums national victories I get very emotional. The fences on the Aintree course now are nothing like they were then. I don't think there will be another horse like him. 5 times he ran it and never fell! A true hero, love him.
"...They're willing him home now!" Like Kenneth Wolstenholme's "They think it's all over..." is one of the most iconic commentaries in sporting history. Superb stuff.
Oh my the memories of Rummy & Peter O’Sullivan’s commentary “you’ve never heard anything like like it in Liverpool “ never the likes to be heard again in my lifetime
After this Grand National, Boom Docker was sent to my old Trainer Michael Masson to help coax him back into jumping and I was given the task of schooling him! We just did it quietly by popping him over the some straw bales then over the hurdles and then finally we took him off to Plumpton to school him over the fences and I still get goose bumps when I remember coming up to the first fence and expecting him to put in another couple of strides like all the other horses around me but he just took off into the air and I thought we're not gonna make it but he landed as far the other side as he took off from and all I really had to do was sit tight over the rest of the fences! He was by far the best jumper I ever sat on and will never forget him and will always wonder what might have been had he not refused in 77? But then again if he'd had kept going, I would never have got to ride him!
Hard to say what made him refuse,he was jumping brilliantly,as he obviously did for you.Now the previous year he had been brought down at 2nd bechers but i think if he would have made it that far he would have got a place,i dont think he would have beat Red Rum,hard to say about Churchtown Boy but im sure hed have got 3rd.Shame he refused though,it always leaves you wondering
"It's hats off for a tremendous reception you've never heard one like it at Liverpool! ... Red Rum wins the National!" Such great commentary saluting such a legendary horse. Both Rummy and O'Sullevan were the best. Unforgettable.
Sometime in the early 70's, I remember a smoked filled front room, cricket , and my dad screaming for Red Rum to win . Magnificent horse. One of the few joys of the 70's.
I'd actually forgotten about Churchtown Boy, and I live up Churchtown now! Always loved horses, but never be another like Rummy!....3 TIMES!, and he had laminitis!!! What Ginger achieved from that small stable yard was bloody incredible! ..used to see them all going for a gallop on Birkdale beach.... beautiful.
He's coming home to a tremendous reception you've never heard the likes of it at Liverpool RED RUM WINS the national.tell me that is not the greatest line in sport
Never be a Horse like Rummy, always will be the best National horse ever. 3 1sts and 2 2nds, Peters commentary, the crowd when jumping the last. always tear in my eye.
+Andy Sutton ..and not forgetting his record-breaking performance in '74 when winning the Grand National AND the Scottish Grand National in just one season!
Excellent memories from my childhood. You can imagine what Boom Docker was thinking when he refused at the 17th.... "sod this, I ain't going around again" lol.
Sebastian IV (1st time) and Andy Pandy (2nd) both fell at Bechers. Completed the course apart from the last 2 fences which they ran around and led rummy up to the line. A Scottish National and a Whitbread winner as guard of honour?
He's getting a tremendous reception you've never heard the likes of it at Liverpool RED RUM WINS THE NATIONAL wow makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up what a true legend rummy was
I was a Red Rum fun when I was six. I remember sitting at home with with a bottle of dandelion and burdock and a box of maltesers. When Churchtown boy loomed up behind him I was terrified he was going to get beat. He just popped it as if it wasn't there. The crowd Road and I just burst out in tears. There will never be another day like it in sporting history and I wasn't even a racing fan.god bless you tummy. You will always be in my heart
My first ever bet courtesy of dad, 10p wim Red Rum 1976 national, second then 1977 same bet same horse, win.. I was only 11, but it hooked me onto NH racing. What a fabulous horse he was.
Every time I watch it,the performance gets more remarkable. The weight he was carrying, his age and general form. But Rummy loved it.He seems to be really enjoying himself and showing them how it's done. Probably the greatest performance of all time.I will never forget Rummy.
This is the greatest horse of all time in any race in any era! We are privilege. He beat over 200 horses in 5 races and finished second twice on ground he didnt like! We will never see his like again! It is quite simply remarkable! For people who question him he beat a dual gold cup winner and one of the greatest horses of all time receiving two stone then giving the same back! this will never be ever repeated in our lifetime Red Rum is immortal forever!
The best I was there moment in my life. Even though I had backed Andy Pandy. When he fell at bechers the whole crowd sensed it was Red Rums race and the whole crowd roared him home
If he hadn’t fallen at Becher’s then Andy Pandy would have changed history! Remember how far clear he was? And full of running too. His trainer Fred Rimell had earlier said that his mount would win the National if he could jump Becher’s twice. Andy Pandy went on to win the Whitbread Gold Cup a few weeks later at 4/1. I know! I backed him with everything I had!
Watched this loads - as he approaches the lasts few lengths as the crowd cheers it always brings tears to my eyes. Something about Red Rum evoked so much love. He was a beautifully special race horse - and a True Hero. God bless that splendid gee gee !! Greatest National winner ever !! God loves him. May he rest in peace. Rxxxxx
+Riki Newton Same here, Riki! However many times I watch, I'm always bawling by the penultimate fence! The unforgettable Rummy. His amazingly brilliant victories will never likely be equalled, let alone surpassed! :)
Eyecatcher (a filly, I think) was also third in 1976 and, then, ridden by three times National winner Brian Fletcher. If I recall rightly your dad was called Chris Read?
burnleyfan11965 She was an aintree regular running 3rd in the 76 and 77 Nationals. She started in the 73 Foxhunters with a 6th. In the 74 and 75 Tophams she fell and unseated and came back in for the 78 topham but was brought down.
This brings back happy memories seeing this GN again. Some old favourites in there: The Pilgarlic, Boomdocker, Spanish Steps, etc. Julian Wilson's commentary at Beechers "...and Andy Pandy is down!" is also up there with memorable lines. Used to organise the family sweepstake for the race as a 11 year old. Happy times.
I'm a huge sports fan but not really horse racing fan but this is the only sporting occasion that leaves me with tears in my eyes. Great commentary as well.
R.I.P Sir Peter. legend commentary will be missed. Thank you for your commentaries on the races. This was the best. you calling in the best National horse home.
It's interesting if you watch his win in '74, very sparse crowds along the rails on the run-in compared to here. He really did help save the race in it's darkest days.
What a fabulous beast. !! And a tremendous moment that brings tears to ones eyes. An historic victory - for an amazing (g)race horse. Redrum - A True Legend !! Peace !! Rxx
Something special about these creatures called horse super super go red rum a legend forever never to be forgotten timeless will always live deep in our hearts, A brave and courageous beautiful horse that only comes once in a lifetime 5 times he ran the National wining 3 what an amazing achievement even till this day we are amazed by him really glad able to see him on youtube and appreciate what a wonderful horse he was
Brilliant commentary rip sir Peter osullivan and rip Julian Wilson.. There virtually the only ones left in the 1977 grand national no one will ever witness such a great grand national only will ever be one red rum the greatest horse and the greatest commentator sir p osullivan
Rummy was special, wasn't he?! He had the biggest heart of any racing horse, and he loved hearing the crowd. Many of those whom don't bet always follow the national, and Rummy played his part in that. There's not many who don't know about the great horse in the UK. He set a record never to be broken.
Helene Millar Most definitely! No racehorse is more loved, and he loved his crowd back. I loved the way he'd prick his ears on the final straight, Rummy knew he was special and well loved. I went to 2011 National, and standing near his grave while seeing Ballabriggs romp home and imagining Rummy gave me chills. His aura is still felt there after all these years. Not to discredit other legendary horses, but I suppose it's that reason as to why Aintree has the privilege of being the burial place of the only, and its most valued, racehorse.
I've yet to have the honour of visiting Rummy's final resting place, but it's definitely on my 'to-do' list for next year! As you say, a very fitting place for such a well-loved and most illustrious Aintree performer to be buried, his head of course, facing the winning post. God bless the King of Aintree!
Of 3 horses that stick in my mind with there story's simula styles, red rum and Seabiscuit match up as they both inspired hope to a nation and had some sort of foot/leg complaint and were slightly smaller than the average horse, and secretariat and red rum share a unbelievable race record and there poseing ability and charisma and grace all 3 match in simula ways regardless of debate the only difference is red rum would of really given the two Americans a run for there money because the two Americans did not have jumps rummy did have jumps
Just got myself a photo of Tommy and Rummy going over the final fence in the the 77. Used to have some photos which Billy Ellison, one of the stable lads gave me, but sadly , lost them during one of my many house moves😢 Got a Rummy t shirt in the mail soon as well ✊💙Loved that horse, and love the National!!!
..reached over 100K views....thanks for all your comments regarding this piece of British racing history...long live the memory of this iconic horse...
RED RUM IS JUST PHENOMENAL BOTH ON AND OFF THE TRACK.GREAT RIDE BY TOMMY. BUT WHAT A RACE CALL OF THE FINAL TWO (2)FENCES BY PETER O,SULLIVAN. GOOSEBUMPS..!!😍😍
I've just watched this for the second time in my life, the first time was 1977 on the day, I was a 9 year old boy and remember the talk of rummie winning, I'll never forget the roar of the crowd when he cleared the last fence, rummie was a real one off, a legend never to be forgotten.
Red Rum is the only racehorse in history to have won at 5 furlongs and 4 and half miles and both at the same track !! His first race ever was a 5 furlong seller on the flat at Aintree which he won and then he switched codes and eventually won the national three times :)
A historic achievement from a legend of a horse accompanied by words William Shakespeare would have been proud of from a master commentator. Together they bring a tear to my eye every time I see it.
Loved that horse! My great granny lived round the corner from Ginger's yard, so I used to go round there a lot. Rummy was quite a cocky horse, but liked people and mints. I was on Aughton Road for all his home comings .
2014 Becher + Sefton, 41 runners, 6 miles, 39 fences, 1 faller and regrettably 1 fatality with a flat injury. As the late Josh Gifford said, "they have ripped the guts out of the fences".
Red Rum to have runs and wins like he did the 'Grand National'. Red Rum will always be adored and remembered. The time this horse ran that race and course was so much more difficult.
The greatest Grand National horse ever, he loved the people and the fame. He was at Blackpool and other events. Thousands of people would pay him and he never bothered. RIP Rummy.
Red Rum's achievement will never be equalled. He really was the most magnificent Aintree horse.Everything about the National better back then. The fences, the commentary and the race as a spectacle was so much better.
I also have tears when watching it, not sure why, just something unlike all other horses winning. I think it must be the rags to riches and the little horse who could melded in with our childhoods.
Still get emotional watching this not only for the great Red Rum winning his 3rd Grand National but Sir Peter O' Sullevan commentry as well sends chills down my spine
A true legend..........to "this" day etc.........I was nearly 10 when he won his 3rd GN........Everyone "around" the TV Shop window..."Glued" to it.....Cheers at the end of race "Well deserved". When people talk about him even "now"..Every time....Its "he was-brilliant"........He "certainly has "never" been forgotten in any shape or form...Good for him. x x x x
Just watched this for the first time in 30 odd years, We were proud to own and train Forest King ( who also finished that day) We bought him for £125 as a trekking horse, the year before he won 9 on the trot and 12 out of 14 starts, The national was not to be but I cannot think of a better horse to be beaten by. when I look back at that now, I’m taken with just how brutal the old Aintree fences were. It was a hard hard old test of man and horse, hats off.!
Always have a tear in my eye when I watch Red Rum win this race, what a magnificent horse, so much respect for him and Tommy Stack who respected him by not using the whip.
Really, Winter Rain was killed at Bechers first time round and Zetas Son at Valentines second time. As much as I adored Red Rum I am glad the fences are easier. I don't get pleasure from seeing horses thrashing about on the ground. Look at the film again and you will see a very distressed Winter Rain lying on the floor. Rummy's record will never be bettered despite the easier course; he was unique, the perfect Aintree horse
Rosalind Mercer 100% REALLY! No one wants to see fatalities. However, what you have ended up with today is a speedy showjump thats never been so dangerous where horses and jockeys sprint around without respect for the soft obstacles. Lets be clear about this. The most shocking fatalities are seen over hurdlinf obstacles - not much different to the current fances. What many people including the BHA fail to mention is the number of fatalities since 1990 far outweigh the 23 years prior to the modifications made. Remember the years 1961,62,63,64,65,66,68,69,71,72,72,76,80,81,82,85,86,88? Big fields, big stiff fences and importantly all fatality free.
Gary Gordon....yep.....the falls you do get in the National nowadays are momentum falls....caused by speed....the horses brush through these flimsy fences and their unchecked forward momentum causes them to topple over ..the old stiffer fences negated this momentum....sad to say that the old style National horse that could jump anything but lacked basic speed would stand no chance now....remember Red Marauder, Earth Summit and Just So...its not the race it was and certainly not the race it was meant to be...RIP...
chatham43..totally concur with your comments....however just to be pedantic the '68 National did regrettably have a fatality...Champion Prince at the water....but no fatalities in '74...or '78...
chatham43 Thank you for the correction. I recall there was a pile up at the water including Foinavon. I think Wikipedia should be updated to record Champion Prince's fate as there is currently no mention.
Am 54 now so was very young when red rum won his 1st but i remember that race and red rum was so beautiful and he took them fences like he did it every week not once a year.Been watching all the famous horses ive seen in my lifetime and there have been so many greats down the years and i miss them horses like red rum west tip and the great dessie DESERT ORCHID brings a tear of both joy and sadness because i love them and miss them horses.
This is the only race I ever bet on and I had my biggest bet ever on Andy Pandy, and was gutted when it fell while coasting it. But I still roared Red Rum home with a tear in my eye. What a legend.
