The Lamborghini Countach is the car that ushered in the modern supercar era. It popularized the now iconic wedge design that was synonymous with supercars of the 1970s and 1980s. It also made the cab forward design language popular as well. There were quite a few versions of the Lamborghini Countach that were produced, the first model was the LP400. It had a smooth, sleek design that certainly stood out at the time, but it was the aggressive looking LP400S that most will remember. That model featured the wider tires, flared wheel arches, and optional rear wing that is the signature look of the Lamborghini Countach.
The vehicles also used an experimental periscope instead of a rear view mirror because you couldn’t see out of the back. Today, the LP400 version of the Lamborghini Countach is available for an average of $1 million, while the LP400S goes from $450,000 to nearly a million. The next evolution of the Countach came with the LP500S, which had a bigger engine and an upgraded interior. It was followed by the LP5000QV or QuattroValvole, which had a European carbureted version called the downdraft or DD.
There was also the U.S. version that was produced to meet American emission and safety standards, which included huge safety bumpers that most American owners promptly removed or didn’t order in the first place. A smart move, since those bumpers were not exactly flattering; they ruined all of the meticulously designed curves and angles of one of the world’s premier supercars. Fortunately, the Lamborghini Countach is exempt from modern safety standards, so the purity of its original design remains, which means that it is available from Curated in all of its legendary, iconic glory.
We are Curated mission is to pair the world’s greatest automobiles with the world’s greatest collections.

Peter Dron's 1990 book (Crowood Auto Classics, Lamborghini Countach The Complete Story, ISBN 1 85223 361 3) is about as definitive as it gets. As to production numbers, well good luck with that; even Lamborghini don't have definitive records. My personal favourites are the very first Perisocopio on XWXs and the 5000QV on purely visual grounds. But there is an argument for the 25 Anniversario as the best resolved, best driving car and of course for being Horacio Pagani's first production essay. Says something that even 45 years on any of them will stop traffic!

My jaw hit the floor when you showed the green Countach. I don't think I've ever seen one in that color before. As a teen I had a poster that had all the Lamborghini's made up to that time with the 25th anniversary in the middle. I was the same kid growing up as I was also researching everthing I could find on Lamborghini and Ferrari. Thank you.

The low body cars are physically lower than the later cars which grow 3+ inches in hight of body, not just suspension road hight. Important detail that takes the two cars side by side to see it’s a major difference and value to those desiring the pure original car and those wanting a car they can actually fit in if a driver is what’s desired. Showing the side by side would make a good video as only 1 by Harry I have seen to date in his awesome Lambo 12 timeline video.

I use to do the same thing as a kid, I would read books, magazunes, owners manuals just to get knowledge from those type of cars.

Great fact the qv in the European market was still on carbs, 6 webers, and had a much better sound with pops I think it had a little bit more power too. The American model had 420bhp and the European had 455bhp

Awesome history lesson. The extra images / vids much appreciated. A request: Here's hoping that one of your Curated TV vignettes (or a Q&A segment?) will profile more deeply the improbable Canadian connection to Lamborghinis, via Walter Wolf. '...these cars, going back in history are... maybe the most important Countachs ever made...' How cool is that!? Be well, keep sharing your passion and sneaker collection!

Thanks for making this video on the history of the Countach. I loved the filming and your passion. From my research, is the LP500S the same car as the LP5000S that you mention? I was looking at the Lamborghini registry which seems to suggest it is www.lamborghiniregistry.com/Forums/CountachLP500S.php. Anthony Prichard’s book on Lamborghini states the following models, years and production numbres. LP400 (1974-78 150 made); LP400S (1978-82 237 made); LP500S (1982-85 321 made); QV (1985-1990 618 made - but has he included the 25th Anniversary in these numbers?) I read the correction on why the “low body” cars were called the low body. Lastly, was the Countach Evoluzione actually destroyed in crash testing? I’ve only seen photos of it. Please keep posting more Lamborghini content. Best wishes from the UK.

I have a member in my facebook group "Old School Lambos" who has a copy of the original production schedule that was drawn by Ferruccio himself.

The low body wasn’t just lower because the car was slammed there is less head room in them too so the body was lower too.

The low body cars were called that because of the roof not the suspension

Low Body cars had Both, Lower Suspension by 3 centimeters and a Lower Roof line, also by 3 centimeters (1.18 inches). - These were the last of the Series 2 cars and the very last one made had Vin. # 1121310. So I'm sorry to say you are absolutely wrong in your statement!!!

Would rather have a Ferrari modena for 100K......if I was going to spend that kind of money, a mid late 90's Diablo.
