No one had ever put the amount of work into a three minute pop song that Brian Wilson put into recording and producing this track. He was pushing the limits of the recording technology of his time, and he took pop and rock production to an entirely different level with this "pocket symphony."

This song has long been considered one of the most important and innovative songs in music history. It was literally spliced (tape cut with a razor blade, and spliced) together . It was made from numerous sessions, and from different studios, to get the desired effects.

Magical time. The Beatles were pushing boundaries and the Beach Boys were in competition with them. Gone was the simple verse chorus verse chorus verse chorus format.

According to THE BEATLES, "Good Vibrations" and "God Only Knows" by THE BEACH BOYS are the two most beautiful songs to have been composed and recorded in the history of pop rock. Thanks.

This song uses the theremin - an unusual instrument - to get that weird wailing sound. If you're not familiar with it, you move your hand through an electromagnetic field, and that adjusts the tones. If you're curious about it, I believe they show it being played in a performance video of this song. This song was produced in the era where the Beatles and Beach Boys kind of felt a friendly competition, and they were in the process moving from commercial teeny bopper music into new creative places. The Beatles were also in friendly competition with The Who and the Rolling Stones.

This version of Theremin is controlled with a dial instead of the hand being moved. It's called Electro-theremin

The "BAND" actually playing the music here is called the "WRECKING CREW". They are a Hollywood group of studio musicians that did tracks for movies, TV, and a lot of LA rock acts. They did the music for the show "The Monkees". The Beach boys learned to play this in concerts and they did the singing. But, all the music is played a studio band and not the group. They did all the Beach boys music until the end of the 60s.

The Beatles and the Beach Boys were constantly pushing and inspiring each other on to greater heights. This song inspired the creation of "Strawberry Fields" . . . . . . Paul McCartney's favorite album was "Pet Sounds" and his favorite song is "God Only Knows" . . . . .

Brian Wilson was competing with the Beatles, and the Beatles noticed and competed right back. Compare this song with “Come Together”. And the music world was never the same. Great review, Ace! Compare Rubber Soul to Pet Sounds-two of the most innovative albums in history.

Just like the Beatles, you need to hear their earlier recordings to appreciate their rapid evolution. Surfer Girl, I Get Around, Little Deuce Coup, Help Me Rhonda, Fun, Fun, Fun, Don't Worry, Baby. Their early songs were about cars, girls, and surfing, but are all great songs with their famous harmonies and catchy tunes. By the time this was released, we were blown away by the different direction that Brian Wilson was taking, but loved it.

That whistling instrument is called a Theremin , a box with an attenae which has pitch & sound controls . It works by waving your hand in front of it. Jimmy Page used it for the song , Whole Lotta Love . Tracii Guns of L.A. Guns also used for their song , Malaria

This was a huge hit in the late '60's. It was totally different from typical rock music because it had so many separate, unique sections in it. And notice the contrapuntal section at the end! Listen to it again. It will grow on you.

Good Vibrations was one of the biggest songs of 1966, and hit Number 1 in the USA, UK and Australia. Funny enough this is only a few months after God Only Knows which was a B-side to the also excellent Wouldn't It Be Nice (Check out Pet Sounds in it's totality for a great audio experience as well as The Smile Sessions). The photos on both songs are a few years older than the songs, the Beach Boys went from being a surf pop/rock harmony group with increasing sophistication as the decade rolled on.

It took 6 months to record over dozens of sessions. Some would last a few minutes, others would last hours. The instrument (Electro Theremin) that makes the spooky sounds was a $50,000 investment, and was the only song it was used on. It took 24 musicians a total of 90 hours to record all of the different tracks, and was then spliced together using razor blades, then compacted to around 3 minutes. Capitol records footed the bill and wound up with one of the most iconic tracks in rock and roll history.

Other Beach Boys songs to check out-surfer Girl, Warmth Of The sun, wouldn't It Be Nice and Dance Dance Dance. Good Vibrations was in response to the Beatles album Rubber Soul thinking they had to up their game which they did with the album Pet Sounds in 1966 which this song comes from. In response, Paul mcCartney was inspired to up their game (Beatles) thus the Sgt. Pepper album in 1967. Bands were in constant competition with each other which meant songs were being crafted at a higher level.

Simply the greatest, most ambitious song ever recorded by the Beach Boys, and probably by any American group in rock and roll history. Simply a landmark song. The music landscape changed with the release of this single. Listen to the complex harmonies and multiple parts that have been layered together, and then remember that this was produced long before computers and when multi-track tape machines were at their very genesis. They might have had FOUR tracks, max, to work with. Not like today where they can use an unlimited number of tracks on a computer running Pro Tools or Logic Pro. This kind of complex arrangement of rock 'n roll songs was just not done in 1966 except by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and by the Beatles. But in a competive volley between the two groups, this certainly sent the ball back into the Beatles' court.. It's also worth nothing that the entire backing track was played by The Wrecking Crew, the core group of Los Angeles studio musicians that played on literally HUNDREDS of hit songs in the '60s and '70s. You really should rent the movie "The Wrecking Crew" to further your music education. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--ZgBexrZvM0.htmlsi=OjoOKWKbAH05OsIA

I really feel this group is something your expected to like. My generation was close to this period. I used to get a ride home in 11th grade. He would blast it from the parking lot to my door daily. I always felt embarrassed. This group is ok in certain situations but not. "Kokomo" is a good song.

Early days of radio (until the late 60s) ALL songs HAD to be less than 3.5 minutes long or the advertisers would not allow the playing. No radio station thought they could survive going more than 3 minutes without a commercial. The Beatles were the first band to gather enough clout to start stretching that.
