It is _the_ fan made music video. I was so excited when he said he was going to talk about a Kendrick song most have never even heard, but then he said Cartoons and Cereal and I was like "I just played that yesterday😂" Probably the reason this video popped up in my feed
Such a good fuckin' song; one of my favorites released in the last 15 years easy. I have to space it out so I do NOT overplay it like my own personal radio hell.
Wow, I've had that same snare problem in a sample. I was able to cut it out and place basically mini cuts in its place, but it never came out like i really wanted it to. So, with this technique for Cartoons, I'ma have to revisit it haha. Thanks, Navie, as usual!
@@NavieDstep splitting? perhaps you meant stem? If so, yeah, I haven't tried that yet.. lol I'm iffy on using any ai stuff.. I may at some point, though. cheers!
WILEEEE COYTE WILEEEEE COYOOOTEE, i remember when i first discovered this song and i agree with the statement in the beginning "people who've heard it all agree it was better than goodkid" i never knew it was that rare
Yep. How I see it, many folk who were huge fans of Kendrick sort of grew apart from his music, and there's a bunch of new artists that spawned from Damn and Mr Morale
Guarantee if you from Cali you know this .. was playing way back in high school born 95 this one of TDE best songs from that ERA along with Blessed and Say Wassup
@beners blessed is crazyyy good lotta people forget about it and what pisses me off is that there are some songs from that Q album on spotify but not blessed? Wtf!?
I've definitely heard this one many times and it has always had a special place in my heart. I also really enjoyed The Spiteful Chant which I think also ended up having sample clearance problems iirc. Anyway, thanks so much for doing a deep dive on the production for this! ❤
I heard Cartoons and Cereal many years ago and it was by far one of my favorite songs by him. In fact, I think I heard it when I was first learning about his music. I love how you break all the elements down to a science. Makes me appreciate the song and his music even more!
I didn't know about this song until today. It's still not my favourite Kendrick cut, but I can definitely appreciate the inventive production. It's a shame that the original artist wouldn't clear this song for him.
I always loved this song, cause I had it when downloading music was still a thing, but the last couple years when I started using spotify, I almost completely forgot this song. You just brought it back to me, and this is insane.
That sample at 4:48 is also used recently in Trae tha truth - Sware I'm . Love that sample it's exactly like you said very melancholic puts me in a whole vibe!
Bombay used this same sample for Blu - The Return a couple of years later. It's amazing how whole ideas, concepts and songs can come from such a short snippet.
I remember when this song dropped. It was like an atomic bomb in my playlist lmao. On REPEAT. Such an incredible track. What a great breakdown too. Would've never imagined the sample was from that source.
As soon as you first said the words “cartoons and cereal” I liked the video. It’s my favourite Kendrick song and so many people don’t know about it I also agree that if this song properly got put out there, it would be on top for real
never in my life would i have thought that i could be on the part of youtube where i discover karim benzema breaking down music production, but here i am, good video
I still remember when I first heard this song back in the day. I downloaded it on my PSP and listened to it over and over and over, still hits to this day!
I have most definitely heard the song and Gunplay lyrics are his best I've heard from him when I realized it was him I was so happy that he was on the track he really out did himself
this song definetly on you tube him and gun play i love diffrent thats what i strive too do out the box i no it word 4 word i think g play spit the best verse of his career
@@NavieD thats crazy im a dj not really a song spin i no how too get good copy dj jazzy mitch he has every song ever made lol this guy runs his entire house wifi on 3g phone
huh, once I realized this was about Cartoons and Cereal I figured this was just gonna be "sample didn't clear", which is the case lol, but it was really dope seeing the recreation of the beat and going in-depth on how the sample was used. cool video
Having Cartoons and Cereal as the opening track would have just added and made it even better. It would be cohesive to the story too but there obviously would be a time jump from this to Sherane storyline. But it would have been one of the best intros to an already GOAT hip hop album!
My man love the video. Could you do something similar for my favorite Kid Cudi song which was also never released? Do it Alone - Kid Cudi. Much love and respect for what you do. 🔥
Didn't hear about this song until this video! But after checking the Kendrick Tracker, there's a version with updated mixing made closer to the release of gkmc! Def recommend checking it out.
It’s on SoundCloud . I was the first person out of my whole friend group to find out about tde in 2010/2011. And when I showed people cartoons and cereal, they were fucking mind blown . That one and Rigamortus. It’s in high quality too on SC.
Damn I remember this song, I heard it so long ago before I even knew who kendrick was. I've heard it several times since, but never new the same and couldnt find it anywhere. So thank you for the name.
Yo, that music video with bugs bunny and coyote on the thumbnail was the first time I listened to that song... eleven years ago. Still listening to this day. And I'm from Brazil.
the greatest thing about artists is that we never get their current self. we're always interacting with their past. even surprise albums are never where they're at in that moment. even if the album rollout makes it seem like "this is who i am right now" and the album is succeeding. Their mind is always way ahead onto the next project at all times.
@@Kanyewestbiggestfan123 yeah better to not know about it and not have it be officially released than the other way around.. crazy as it is I think it slots in perfectly as a MMATBS closer (as much as I like Mirrors).
Man from the moment I heard the song at 13 I knew it’d never be big but it’s be that song with a cult following for it’s under appreciation. I knew I couldn’t be the only one who thought it was special I’m glad we all experienced it together 💪🏽💪🏽
I remember hearing this song on a fan made video about 10 years ago. Listened to it a bunch since then but I knew Kendrick was gonna be huge. Does anyone know anything about a Tupac Joint ft. Kendrick or Picture Me Rollin’ ft. Kendrick? Are they both fan made?
literally heard this back in the day in the trap. girl was over bumpin it and i was like who dat? she said Kendrick. I already heard of him from drakes take care album. i remembered cause he used that intro voice in that song too
This song is very nostalgic to me. It was actually the first song I heard by him at the end of 8th grade. Remember riding in my friend’s older brother’s car at night smoking blunts blasting it on his subs. First times smoking too lmao.
Cartoons and Cereal and Lookout for Detox were great. There was a lot of hype before Good Kid Mad City and those two songs built a lot of fans anticipation what was coming next post section 80 was going to slap. that and the dr. dre cosign were huge
I absolutely love this song and i see the similarities in its themes to gkmc but i still really struggle to see where it would have fit into the story and overall narrative of the album so I'm kinda glad it just gets to live on its own as a "iykyk" fan favorite and gkmc stays perfect as it is
