Nobody does Beatles breakdowns like this man , simply the best i have ever come across anywhere the interweb included. Thanks for sharing your brilliant work.
I think the choice of Can't Buy Me Love for the frolic in the park scene can't be questioned.....that song was perfect. However, Cry Instead is still one of my strongest musical recollections from Hard Day's Night....joining Happy Just to Dance with You and I Should Have Known Better as favorite tracks associated with Hard Night film. All joyous and toe-tapping melodies, and distinctively The Beatles.
Yes, that's the operative word, magic. A lot of people made music, and some of it was very good. But only the Beatles made magic. How they did it is still not known. I bet they didn't even know.
"I'll Cry Instead" was also included on The Beatles' "Something New" album, their 3rd release on Capitol Records (it was released around the same time as "A Hard Days Night" movie, and "the official" soundtrack album were released). "Something New" was my first Beatles album and the very first album I'd own (I was around 8y/o at the time), so this song, and John's vocals, means a lot to me. Thank you for doing this breakdown of the song.
I’ve always loved this song even though it gets overshadowed by everything else they did. What makes this song so great is George’s guitar part. I had always assumed his part was more substantial but in reality it’s really just little bits and pieces. He puts the color into an otherwise black and white painting. Thanks Mike for deciphering the code of George.
Yet another fantastic Beatles lesson Mike! Let's face the facts that the Beatles were and always will be the greatest band in musical history. No other band even comes close IMHO! Anyway, hope that you have a great day and are doing well. 👍👍
I love this song. It was one my first favourite songs off my Dads Hard Days Night album. This was the first album I played as a kid. We used to thrash this song and a Hard Days night on the record player and practiced playing our own band as kids.
Can't wait to work on this using the tabs. You're the Rosetta Stone of Beatles music, Mike. What you're doing for Beatles devotees like me is beyond anything we could hope for. Thank you for all you do! ✌➕❤
Pure class Mike, thank you for your endeavours and efforts in recreating these Beatle classics and showing us the way to better our knowledge of Beatles guitar! James - 🎸 🎶
Thank you, Mike, for this great lesson. Music changed forever with The Beatles. I was 14 when I first heard The Beatles and knew there was something special going on.
Where would Lennon and McCartney have been without George Harrison’s memorable guitar parts. They added so much but are often so simple and relatively uncomplicated. Another great song, thanks. Be interesting Mike when you get around to Let it Be which one of George’s guitar solos you decide to play. For me the album version.
Mike merci and Thanks again. I think I'm basically lazy or that I have a too short attention span to work out these Beatle songs as you do. You are saving me hours of work. Great stuff.
Most excellent Mike! My audio memory is imprinted with all the songs on the "Something New" album, including my favorites, "I'll Cry Instead" and "When I Get Home".
This is great Mike. I have always loved how this song sounds and while all of the parts are needed there is just something else about George's parts that make this tune jump. The sound they were getting in those days is quite something - great guitar tones - in my opinion. Oh, and in the final, all parts together, video at the end a very special shout out to the tambourine part in the center. That was fabulous!
Yes. It is a simple chord structure. But George's part is quite indicrite. You did a great job with it. You've said it before, but it cannot be said enough that the things these boys were doing in the early 1960s were way beyond both their youth and the times. How many times do you see a bass player essentially backing the rhythm by playing two strings at once as McCartney did in that very short.part of I Want to Hold Your Hand ? I think they all were way ahead of their time, including I'll Cry Instead.
By the way, when bands pop this song out in their setlists - especially non-cover bands - this always fills the dance floors and audiences may hit their loudest-ever points.
Great cover! I was born in 1958, in NYC. My Mom's youngest sister, my Aunt Eileen went to college in 66'. And gave me some of her vinyls, mainly the Beatles and had most of those albums. Played along with " box" drums,. And in 1970 got my first cheap guitar. L.o.l...... one of there songs that sticks out in my mind, as far as playing it is " Day Tripper" Great break down Mike !
Absolutely love your stuff Mike. In 1964 I was mowing lawns to save the 15/6 to buy my Beatles EPs. One of my favourites is John's languid Gibson playing on "I'm Only Sleeping." Given the imminent new Revolver release - could you give it your treatment? Chris from Perth, Western Australia
Interesting oddity: The version of this song on the US (Capitol) album "Something New" contains an additional verse compared to the Parlophone album, accordingly the running time on the Capitol album is about 20 seconds longer. On the Parlophone album, the song structure is V1, V2, Chorus, V3, Chorus, V4. On the Capitol album, it's V1, V2, Chorus, V3, V4 (which is a repeat of V1), Chorus, V5.
Another great lesson, I know I keep suggesting these but I would love to see a lesson on Hey Bulldog (with an added section for McCartney's bass part just because it's definitely one of the coolest parts of the song in my opinion) and Anthology cuts like Free As A Bird, Real Love or If You've Got Trouble
As brilliant as always. The seeming simplicity of the song does not make the piece primitive or its analysis easy. All's at its typically very high level, no exclusions here either
one of my favorite quips from John was in Hard Days Night. The older stiff (certainly not Pauls granddad)says l fought a war for you lot and John says l bet your sorry you won
Sounds incredible 😍 Mike how John was inspired by fwbd. Yes a favorite early album.ill b watching listening 🎧 like how You play drums too . those lesson books didn't have the backstory.lol . thx.
