Yes the Beatles were getting taxed 95% in the UK in the 60's. The song has a subtle dig at British Members of Parliament Heath & Wilson. Paul, always the bass guitarist performs the really heavy guitar solo in the middle outlining his multi talents.

At the time George wrote this (late ‘65-early ‘66), the Beatles realized on paper they were millionaires but also realized their profits were being eaten up by the UK tax system. At that time, there were 20 schillings in one Pound Sterling, and due to the Beatles being in the upper tax bracket (similar to America’s “top 20 percent”), they were being taxed at a rate of 19 schilling 6 pence per One pound Sterling. So the cash they could keep was almost nothing. Britain has since changed their monetary system and tax rates but it was a time when you saw a lot of British rock stars - The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, after they broke up all the Beatles in their solo careers - leave the Uk to record in French and American recording studios to avoid British taxes.

One of my favorite George Harrison songs. It Rocks! The wild guitar solo is by Paul McCartney. And, yes, this song is a screed against the taxing authorities in the UK. The song is about the ridiculousness of it all.

A lot of artists left England in the mid to late 60's and early 70's to avoid paying up to 90% taxes.

One of my favorite of all their songs. Written and sung by George Harrison. And yes, the Beatles were taxed at some points 95% by England. Absolutely totally ridiculous. they brought England so much fame, and for them to do that to them was absolutely a crime!,

In 1980 The Jam got a UK chart number one with a song called Start, which is very reminiscent to Taxman. Intentionally, I believe. It utilises the same bass and quitar riff.

UK taxes back then we're much heaver back then . ( income tax ) and capital gains tax .. ( inheritance tax ,aka dath taxes) I think they list 75 percent in taxes
