Taxes were very high in the UK at that time especially for people making money. The Beatles paying over 90 per cent of their earnings to the Treasury. Paul McCartney usually played bass but he played lead on this song. The cover for Revolver was created by German-born bassist and artist Klaus Voormann, one of the Beatles' oldest friends from their time in Hamburg during the early 1960s. Voormann's artwork was part line drawing and part collage, using photographs mostly taken over 1964-65 by Robert Freeman.

The Beatles were paying 19.3 shillings a pound when they wrote this. There are 20 shillings to a pound. Paul said George couldn't play that guitar riff at full speed so they played and recorded it at half speed, he also said George did learn to play it at full speed. They only spent two days on the song in the studio.

"Brushing up on my history of America" I think the word you are looking for is CIVICS. Used to the taught in schools as a mandatory class. In America, it is the executive branch that is responsible for collecting taxes and the actual spending whereas congress makes the laws (budget) that determines what we spend it on, and what the tax structure - for income tax - will be. It is the power of the House of Representatives to create a budget, but since the Senate has to pass it as well and the President has to sign the law, in practice it is a negotiation between all parties until one is presented to the House.

The inspiration was the theme from "Batman". The cover was designed by Klaus Voormann from Germany. A good musician, bassist for the very successful band "Manfred Mann" and a special friend of the Beatles. He won a Grammy for the cover. He is one of the numerous people, referred to as the 5th Beatle. Taxman was not part of the Beatles' live repertoire. Soon after the release of Revolver, the Beatles ended their live tours, which were accompanied by much hysteria and threats to the band. Especially this year, 1966.
@dannygriffith6185

The inspiration more likely came from the 1965 Motown hit "Shotgun" by Junior Walker & the All Stars.

@braudabo
@braudabo 3 месяца назад
@@smartenuphumans The series went on air in January 1966. The Beatles began working on Taxman in April 1966. It's entirely possible, that this one-liner was an inspiration. It's also conceivable, that Jr. Walker's Shotgun played a role. It was from time to time the case, not just with the Beatles, that a passage or a riff from an existing song was taken, to create one of their own. An example: Watch your step by Bobby Parker, from whom Lennon got his inspiration for I feel fine. There are more. It's also hard to assume, that people like the Beatles, who had an open ear for everything, didn't know the Batman theme or the Jr.Walker-Track. If I'm wrong about anything, I'd be happy to be corrected.
@smartenuphumans
@smartenuphumans 3 месяца назад
@@braudabo sigh! The Jr Walker track was music not TV, which meant it raveled faster, and had about 7 years for Lennon to discover. ..Beatles began recording Revolver in April '66 to early June - Taxman being one of the early recordings. Now in 1966 less than half of America owned a TV, and the practice of watching TV was done an hour or two a week, and not a daily event outside of maybe the news hour - think of the internet in the 1990's. In all fairness, TV was considered by many to a "bad influence" back in 1966. The show Batman had mega low ratings in it's first year, then finally appeared in Britain a few months later in June of 1966, after the Revolver recordings were all but wrapped up. In January to late February of '66, Harrison was on his honeymoon in Greece, and the other Beatles had daily busy schedules with appearances, and interviews, as they were at the height of Beatlemania and this meant flying around Europe to fulfil these contract obligations, plus had to squeeze in rehearsals for their upcoming Japan tour, plus McCartney was in the studio working with another artist (can't remember who) - all between Jan-April of 1966. So they had four months during this busy time where they could have heard the theme song from a low rated unpopular American TV show, during a time when TV's weren't the number 1 media platform. This means someone would have had to record the song on 8 mm tape in America, fly across to England and give it to someone to give to The Beatles, and then The Beatles would have had to be interested enough to listen to this nothing TV theme of a television show, then Harrison would have to be convinced to incorporate it into his song knowing the copywrite laws but not caring and willing to ruin The Beatles mega success. All within a few weeks. Could have that happened, sure, but highly highly doubtful. You can't think of "today's" technology practices, as it was tremendously different 60 years ago.
@braudabo
@braudabo 3 месяца назад
@@smartenuphumansThe Beatles were actually extremely inactive in the first three months of 1966. Yes, Harrison and Boyd got married, Starr and McCartney, who was probably also doing something with Peter+Gordon during this phase, traveled and they had several parties in this time... And there were certainly days, when the Beatles acted incognito. But I have no idea, how that worked out in detail. But: during this time, Brian Epstein traveled to the USA several times (January, 2x in March) to plan the tours. Also the upcoming one in Japan. Incidentally, there was no preparation whatsoever for the concerts in Germany and Japan - that's what some of them sounded like... It cannot be ruled out, that Harrison was presented with the Batman theme, however and wherever - or that he simply heard on the radio. By the way, if one were really mean, one could accuse Harrison of thinking in 1970, I made it with Taxman (or Shotgun), so I try the same with He's so fine by the Chiffons for My sweet Lord... Shotgun, recorded in 1964, was released in 1965 and has nothing to do with Lennon. I think, you meant Watch your step? Basically, it's all secondary. In the history of music there are definitely songs from 40, 50 years earlier, I don't know, that could also be associated with these tracks. But that doesn't change the fact, that the Beatles produced a hot track, that can still be enjoyed today.

I can tell that you are going to be a lot of fun to watch and as far as what to do next you've already got good ideas there's only $210 songs my vote is do them all. A fun film to watch and get a sense of the personalities of The Beatles and a look at how their lives were during the early years is “A Hard Days Night.” It was made before they became more political and the songs are more lighthearted. For a serious look at the overall history of The Beatles and the time period, check out the 3-part documentary that came out in 2021 “Get Back” directed by Peter Jackson (director of Lord of the Rings trilogy) which used the most advanced techniques to clean up footage shot from the 1950s to the present. Although it is long, it is exceptionally fascinating and has the best version of the famous “rooftop concert” they performed in January 1969.

We vote on politicians who reflect our priorities and values, both as individuals and as members of a nation of citizens. Those politicians are responsible for spending -- per taxes -- priorities and policies. So, since I am a Democrat, I want to vote for someone who knows, intellectually (he or she is smart) and morally (he or she is a good person), what spending priorities should be administered. They do the work of the people -- all of us, not just the super-wealthy -- and we grow and improve our society accordingly. We should elect respectable, reliable, competent people to represent us in the work of our American society and national priorities. And then, every two or four years, hold them accountable for the work they did or did not do.
