He and Lennon both as well as the Beatles in general were genius at harmonizing. I agree totally with you on this. I love the song which song wrote on his own...but Paul's contribution in playing drums and the bass are great and his harmonizing at the end just adds a heavy bit of icing to the cake. I just love his harmonizing at the end of the song. And I'm not a big McCarthney fan either. Still...his bass playing on this song is amazing and his drumming works. It's a great song and John and Paul once again display their genius in how the were able to immediately record with just themselves doing it all. Peace.

Paul's famous Hoffner bass. When they first came to the U.S. and were on Ed Sullivan (old black and white TV in the early '60's; I'm 69 now!) I was just a kid who liked them a lot. I later in my teens became a big fan. Anyhow, I often wandered why Paul played his guitar on the "opposite side" of everyone else. Someone told me he was a "leftie" and that's how lefties play a guitar. A few years later and and still a big fan, I almost wore out my 8 track tape (anyone remember those?) of "Abbey Road".

This song was recorded without George Harrison (who was on holiday) and Ringo Starr (who was filming The Magic Christian). McCartney recalls that Lennon had a sudden inspiration for the song and had suggested that the two of them should record it immediately, without waiting for the other Beatles to return. Geoff Emerick's book (after describing how dire some sessions were): "On this one day, they reverted to being two old school chums, all the nastiness of recent months swept under the rug... It was a great session, one of those magic times when everything went right and nothing went wrong. The whole record was completed in just a few hours, from start to finish, including the mix --- just like the good old days.... they made for a great two-man band. It was so refreshing to see Paul and John in good spirits and not arguing."

The beatles, the best in 1964 and the best in 2022. I still listen to their music all the time. They are just as relevant today as they were in the 60's. Their message of peace and love will never be obsolete. Its timeless. Love and peace is what everyone wants. Love u Beatles.

You're John Lennon, you have all these disagreements with Paul, relationship at an all time low, etc... but then when there's music to be made he records your song with you playing all these instruments, godlike vocal armonies and makes the song sound great. How can you not love this guy? it's impossible. I totally love John and his music, but Paul deserves sooo much credit. Genius isn't a big enough word to describe Paul's talent.

Two of the four Beatles recorded this song. Knocked it out as a single during the Abbey Road sessions, but not on Abbey Road. There was no end to their creativity, even up to the end.

@@tgray119 Yes, but John wanted to move into his cathartic and social commentary stage and he could not do that in the Beatles. Look at John solo work and it's much more personal and insightful in terms of the human condition. The entire plastic Ono band record, was Written following intensive and eEmotionally disturbing "primal scream therapy". In the Beatles, John's work is highly original maverick, Artistically and structurally brilliant both lyrically and musically, but surface level, in terms of semantic depth. In fact "all" of the Beatles work except nowhere man, in my life, yesterday, and a couple of others was brilliant in its originality, genre spanning, execution (on the ear) and structural innovation, but not particularly authentic, or deep in its Semantics This is a Criticism that Lou Reed made in the early Seventies of the Beatles. He Called their music "garbage", because it wasn't really saying anything authentic, just like he called everyone's music garbage 🤣 except the Velvet Underground. Although, you may say who is he to say anything, as a banal artist, but one thing you can't say about Lou is that he wasn't authentic, or writing from his soule, even though the results were not easy on the ear. Within a decade of their solo work, he called "mother" 1 of the greatest tracks ever written and played A rendition of "jealous guy" at the John Lennon tribute concert. Lou had entirely changed his opinion on John's body of work, if no one else's

The fact that this damn fine record reached #8 in the U.S. in June of '69 despite not being played in several large markets (because of the "Christ" thing) shows conclusively that the Beatles still had enough oomph and togetherness to make Abbey Road, which they did in the wake of this record. Imagine, some people thought the party was well and truly over in June of '69. Hilarious.

@@GrosvnerMcaffrey Well they did, kind of. When they did the anthology series in 1994, Paul, George and Ringo came together and added instrumental and vocal overdubs to two John songs, Free As A Bird and Real Love. So basically it was like a Beatles reunion and a tribute to John, even though he was gone, his voice was still there. Also Ringo and Paul later did a cover of John’s song “Grow Old With Me”. They were originally thinking of doing this for the anthology but sadly decided not to go through with it.
