1) it was a cover from a 1962 Isley Bros. record 2) John hated singing it because it ripped his voice to shreds Nonetheless, John kicked @$$ and the rest of the band also took it to new heights
(A comment for casual Beatles listeners, as all hardcore fans like so many of us already know this). I believe they did two takes as I recall (I'd have to consult Lewisohn's Sessions book to be sure on that). But in the marathon session where not the entire (as is frequently stated) but the bulk of the "Please Please Me" album was recorded, they consciously elected to do "Twist and Shout" last. That may seem counter intuitive as it seems like you want to get that one while everyone is fresh and energetic. (But energy was coming in pills in those days anyway). The reason the track was held until last is because, as they learned so well during their Hamburg residencies, a "give it your all" take by Lennon would absolutely shred his voice. As I recall, and it's been years since I read the book, the take from the album is take one. A second take was undertaken, or that is my belief, but by the time that got underway, John was not physically capable of singing with the quality that they had already captured in take one. If you listen to, say the Hollywood Bowl shows, or any number of bootlegs off of the 1964 and 1965 tours, they actually opened with this one, and John did a nice job with that as a show opener, but it never has that tearing flesh quality to the vocal as the album version did, because he still had a whole show ahead of him. On occasion, the live version was shortened, and I suspect that was to preserve John's vocal integrity. It is worth noting this is not take one...and the vocals at least sound live. They vary from the album to a degree. Now this was in the days they frequently did entirely live television and radio performances, so check out the "Please Please Me" album version for the Lennon vocal take in question.
@@juanguatemala4874 yeah I think most who find themselves here are big enough fans to know the Isleys did it first. But, just as my comment was intended as background for those who are not rabid fanatics as I am, I appreciate your remark. Someone has to educate the more novice listeners. With best wishes, sir.
I remember listening to this for our 6th grade end of the year party at the roller rink in Austin, Texas. Man it sounded so great!! Of course, this was the height of Beatlemania!! Still it's one of my favorite Beatles songs and I know they didn't ride it but they did such a great cover of it 😊
Everytime i see the Beatle's twist and shout performance, i can't help feeling dominant presence of John Lennon. Little bit different from the original record, john's vocal performance is superb and cool, and the way he smiles and grins is so charming that it's irresistible. Colorized, the Beatles looks much lively and cool.
Obviously, they were miming on the film. Total lack of microphones and guitar cables. However, the audio isn't from the studio recording, so they may well have made a 'live' take for this TV show. That was something they did quite a lot.
@@peterliston1697 That does make sense. As a Beatles fan I'm sure you know the Swedish TV show they did where they actually played live. On that performance McCartney's microphone and Harrison's guitar were too low in the mix, which is one of the things that the production staff and Brian Epstein would want to avoid.
The raw energy they had back then immediately made me a Beatles fan. I was 7. I know they had some good stuff later but their early stuff is what grabbed me the best.
I like listening to this early clip of the Beatles, their early days still perfecting their individual playing styles and mixing in together including their singing and harmonising together. 🎉
I read somewhere where John said they were very average musicians but together they were magic. I think that sums them up the best. They are magic, one of the. Great vocals on any Beatles record but the band is magic. How can this be 60 years old?
SEE My Husband send me the Black and white video ( no the first time is a long story) but i decided to look the source, the program itself, and i find it...in colour Woao but bam the date of the uploading: My Birthday, concidence? I don't think so. You know when the song ends John look at camera with the most promesing face ever, he was so happy there. Love it for it. Makes me happy always this video, no matter if is B&W or with colors.
I still remember being a grade schooler in the late 80s and watching Ferris Bueller for the first time on VHS and saying to my mom, "He's a really good singer!" And she told me without gloating as boomers are prone to, "That's The Beatles, honey."
Paul ain’t CRAP here hahaha, just some pretty guy going woo behind the nice deeper cues of George. He’s like fourth guy in this stage. But boy did that change very soon. (I’m messing with ya guys hehe)
I am inclined to agree. Ringo is barely tapping his kit. And the guitars don’t look plugged in. Sometimes mics hung overhead for tv shows but I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. Maybe the audio was recorded during the sound check and they decided to lip sync.
@@Quiverbow1 The words quiver and bow are tools used by The Green Arrow of DC comics he is also a member of The Justice League of America 🇺🇸 the same as Superman,Batman,Wonder Woman and others belong to. Hope you see how your name had me thinking you were a Green Arrow fan 🤔
I think it's mimed to a pre recorded tape as it is different to the record but the guitars aren't plugged in. Be that as it may, it's one of the best television videos as it shows Lennon up close.
0:48 wow....u can actually hear his voice crack.......damn John was the best ROCK N ROLL singer ever i think...........he wasnt in the Robert Plant/DIO league, but as for 3 chord rock n roll? pheew he was the BEST
