The province of Zeeland consists of a number of large islands in the South-West of The Netherlands. Part-2 of this film shows the more pleasant times when its inhabitants engage in all sorts of community games, more than a century ago in 1919. Popular community activities and games were haymaking, decorating horses, "ringsteken" (poking a stick through a ring while on horseback or on a horse and cart), "bolderen" (almost a cross between curling and the French "Jeu de Boules") and archery, but in a way that you have probably never seen before.
The province of Zeeland consists of a number of large islands in the South-West of The Netherlands. Part-1 of this film shows the simple and hard rural life of its inhabitants more than a century ago in 1919. At the time nearly all of them wore the traditional dress.
Characteristic are the two small golden reflectors that are worn at the side of the women's caps.
Zeeland has had a long fight with the sea. It was flooded often during many centuries until in the 1960's the Dutch government executed the "Delta plan" which involved closing-off the waters between the islands from the sea by means of large dams and huge sea locks.
Music: 'Dawn Mist', 'Whales Of The North', Through The Mist'' by the great Ukrainean composer Vadim Krakhma.

Is it strange that I'm in my mid 30s.. a guy and just got teary-eyed watching this? No! Not at all. Why? Because people were united and personally involved with eachother in ways that I honestly don't see happening for us again. Especially after this psychological war we've been facing and with the social dilemma. I feel like I'm witnessing everything deteriorating and it really saddens me. These people were ALIVE and attached with themselves... its not like that now. That's why I got tears cuz, I feel like I'm living in the wrong time period cuz my heart n mind seeks the simplicity and life as seen in this video.

when you think about it, those kids lived through so many world changes. WW1, WW2, radio, tv, internet, mobile phones, technology, even if they lived at least 80 years they would still be alive in 2000, 1919 was just 7 years after Titanic so the 8 years olds even lived through that.

@@alwaysright2420 I'm afraid not, just prior to this date there were wide scale potato riots due to food shortages. Then at this time due to Germany being one of the Netherlands main trading partners and the huge economic unrest there it caused a large economic depression after then end of WW1 Because of this the Netherland didn't recover until 1925 when Germany was on the up. Of course this didn't last long as the great depression followed very shortly. Leading to more strikes, protests, rent strikes and even a naval mutiny.

@Blæck Løtus in as gentle a way as possible, people are not good narrators of their own history and anecdotes are not data. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people emmigrated from the Netherlands in this time period to find better lives elsewhere. If you want an example of people remembering their pasts through rose tinted spectacles here is a personal one: If you asked my Grandma years later what she thought of WW2 she would say it was great time and everyone got along. How ever if you read her letters from the time period they paint an entirely different picture due to food shortages and her fiancé at the time dying in combat and people being snide gossips fighting over the smallest thing.

I often find myself longing for a simple society like the one shown in this video. The weight of our present day world is crushing me. Edit: However, I can also see that it was the naivete and ambition of that past world that eventually lead to the chaos in which we currently live.

Nicely put. They were blissfully unaware, yes, and also still living in communion with each other, and that looks like heaven to us. Future generation will presumably look at us that way. that being said, I find looking at their faces and gestures fascinating. The way they carry themselves. So grounded and restrained yet full of life, it give me the sensation of having lost something.

@@Pepijnisdebom My mother's side is from that corner of the country. They were decent down to earth people, but also dangerously superstitious. My great grandmother was under suspicion of being a witch. And she was still alive a little while after WW2. My mother described her as an exceptionally sweet lady, from the area of Goeree-Overflakkee. She was "het swarte wief". Dark black hair, dark dark eyes, and dainty, clearly a witch.

@@Pepijnisdebom Guess the thing back then was, that you know why you get up in the morning and you know what you did the day when you go back to sleep. Nobody shoveld the problems of the whole world by media into your home (and eventually blame you for things, you are not slightly responsible for) and live was much more simple. Of course, no modern medicine, a really shorter live span than today and as a villager you wouldnt see much from the world. But i would say, in things of mental health those people had a better live than we do.

Internet and modern technology truely degenerates our way of life. Sure, life may be easier and it was never easier to express yourself, but let's be honest, most people nowadays just consume. They consume games, videos, films, series, twich. None of this is fulfilling your life. People back then had a whole different way of living together, learning directly from each other, playing together, working with your family members. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I grew up in the 21st century without wars, hunger and poverty in Europe and we have a lot of traditions in my winegrowing village and young people still participate in all kind of events which is great. But what about people in cities? Sometimes I feel like people are just living through the internet, hunting for Instagram fame and stalking their role models through all kind of social media, forgetting to live their own life even though they believe they're living it to the fullest. Just because you consume fancy stuff, own expensive cell phones or buy stuff some influencer told you to buy, doesn't mean you're living.

As beautiful as our collective society is nowadays there's no doubt that technology, corporatism, and globalism have replaced all the unique cultures of the world. Any given country is significantly more alike than it is uniquely different nowadays. The surviving pockets of pure unadulterated culture like this are largely only found in the rural parts of the world now
