I'm fairly sure Iris was introduced as from Kansas City Missouri. She does have my vote since I was also raised in the Kansas City metro area. Iris has a very unusual voice, and it took me some time to appreciate her musical talent. I consider Iris as a very under rated talent. This song would not be an easy one to like, no matter who was singing it!
See for a few people the jury is out on Iris. Like Peter Turner (also from the UK) I am a rabid fan and urge you to check out her back catalogue. Paul Heaton clearly rated her. For songs that more than stack up against even the mighty Beautiful South's canon, check out "Sing The Delta" album. For me, her masterpiece.
Eeko Warrior the south are a band made of different voices . Voices you either love or hate but in each of them they are so different . Iris has the querkiest of all voices . Heaven knows where it comes from . Even she seems mythed by it . Just look at that darling expression when she pulls it out the bag.
This is just beautiful, and for those saying it’s not as good as the original etc etc you must realise she was a guest on the show and then The Beautiful South sung one of Iris’s song.
Just be grateful, you critics, you are witnessing Iris DeMent at her most versatile, beautiful singing, not easy. She will be as big as Dylan and get a Nobel Peace Prize within ten years. Peter Turner, UK, England, Peak District Hinterland.
Oh yes, she definitely did get the sensitivity of the song……….she sings it in the most movingly tearful voice, brimming with emotion. Try listening again, even with your eyes closed & feel the break in her voice, she’s holding back the tears, but only just. Absolutely beautiful.
Awful, truly horrendous vocals and butchering of the lyrics. If she can't sing it properly and use the correct words she should leave it alone altogether, she murdered it.
I used to feel the same way when I first got into folk at the age of 9 or 10. You are missing the point surely. What is singing it properly? The beauty is in the difference. In my opinion anyway.
@@ImpartialDawn In the bonus behind the scenes footage included at the end of the old VHS tape of this concert Dave Hemingway says she wasn't familiar with the song and didn't feel comfortable singing the original lyric. In other words she's a prude who missed the entire point of the song, did the show for the easy paycheque and the band didn't have the balls to tell her not to bother. Should have asked Briana if she wanted to come back or had Jacqui sing it herself.
You mustn’t be feeling the subtleties of the way she sings this song……..she perfectly expresses the poignancy and pain, along with regret. That’s what the song is about isn’t it? It’s not meant to be sweet, or jolly.
@@margaretrickelton6073 I understand the song completely. With this woman sings like an alley cat who is dying a terrible death. She cannot sing it has nothing to do with the way she sings. She has a terrible singing voice and needs to stay the F away from any beautiful South song.
