As an artist and long time anime lover, what a comforting and informative video on a subject I have _never_ seen someone tackle before. As soon as I saw the title I was like "Holy shit, I've never heard anyone talk about this topic. 5 hours? Sign me up" Edit: your use of _Skyward_ Sword music combined with your explanation of the castle floating into the sky (1:20:07) was not lost on me. The art itself is beautiful, but your commentary adds such a heart evoking appreciation for everything that you come across. You encapsulate some of the feelings one can only experience through how passionate you go into depth over even the smaller things. Especially since you approach things more like someone who's talking to a friend than a textbook essay, in my opinion at least. If anything concerning art catches my interest, you'd be the first person I'd think of to listen to speak about it. Thank you so much for the time you put into these, you're a cool internet dude

It's wild, I was *just* thinking about this topic yesterday. Some 90's anime will have a budget of ¥27 and a coughdrop, yet they always hit it out of the park when it comes to backgrounds. And then you have the opposite end of the spectrum, like Akira, which if the entire film was just two hours of backgrounds, it would still be a must-watch.
@wolfochungo
@wolfochungo 6 месяцев назад
this video was like a curated tour through anime's history. hearing someone talk about stuff i care about so passionately, and so many new recommendations is dope. I've barely touched stuff from before the 90's besides ghibli so I'm happy to add so much stuff to my watch list. I've been working in animation, both anime and western stuff, for a while, and knowing the non-industry audience can care so much about this sort of stuff is genuinely pretty inspiring. I know the lineage of animators fairly well, but next to nothing about background artists aside from the most well known examples like Kazuo Oga. Really cool to learn about these artists. Great video, and Laputa is also my favorite ghibli movie.

When I was little, I had yet to discover anime but I remember being obsessed with the backgrounds of my favorite animated kid's shows. Backgrounds are surprisingly involved. Take a character's bedroom for instance. What can we tell about them from the mess (or lack of mess) in the room? What are their toys like? Their books? I can't think of Cardcaptor Sakura's house without thinking about her cute alarm clock or her stuffed animal collection. As a kid, I would draw highly detailed backgrounds to give my characters all the things they would need to be comfortable. It sounds strange, but I wanted my backgrounds to nurture my characters. I still cannot watch a show or play a video game without taking a moment simply to appreciate the environment.

as an italian i have to say that Marco absolutely nails 1800s Genoa, it's clearly based on the descriptions in the novel and the research is amazing. I believe this experience was also very important to myazaki for the making of Porco Rosso, where, even without the same accuracy in the architecture and landscapes because of his onirical style, he's able to immortalize the general vibe perfectly

The energy that comes from these spaces with the music scope that you have created is absolutely beautiful. It's funny that you have made so many different works of art seem like just a stop on a long and ongoing narrative that feels so human and so expressive. The video may be 5 hours, but it still doesn't feel long enough. I just want to linger in these spaces, sitting for just a moment until I am ready to come back up for air. Hollow Knight is one of my favourite games, and your inclusion of it's music is magical. The toxic jungle section in Nausica pairing up with the fungal wastes is so impactful. Of course, Angel's Egg is obvious, but you still made it so impactful. Ya'harguls music in Berserk's eclipse is so so good. What is fascinating for me is that, as someone who grew up in Austria, out of all the Animation depicting the Alps, and just the rough area I grew up in, Heidi does it the best. Hells, I grew up on the series. It is fascinating that someone living on the other side of the planet, in a completey disconnected culture, can grasp what the Alps mean, the Heart of them, and put them to screen better than any animation before or after it.

I literally gasped when I saw this was an almost 5 hour video about anime backgrounds. That's an instant subscribe. I'm only like an hour in and I can't believe there's so much more. This is like going to a dinner expecting a cup of grocery store pudding and getting creme brulée instead. This is the yummy dessert of RU-vid videos. Thank you so much. Also it's Spirited Away Holy fuck im not even a kanye listener but using Lights Flashing for the Akira intro was such a cool move. Also ever since i was 8 and saw the video for Feel Good Inc i have also made that connection to Castle in the Sky!! Ive never heard anyone else say that before so that was awesome.

Tight transitions and pacing that gave everything adequate room in our minds.... A perfectly curated auditory landscape that sent chills down my spine (not to mention using songs whose titles thematically fit?)... An analysis of each work based solely on it's background art and how the story is told through that art is such a raw and unique video topic. It demonstrates a real love for the art form, represents niche works combined with the more popular, and discusses them in a way that makes me not only want to watch every show on this list, but makes me confront the love and talent behind the plot and characters. You've got such a keen eye for varied aesthetics and present them in such a cozy way. No criticism as is the nature in the video essay DNA, just love and admiration. You've seriously made me think differently about art. Every one of your uploads is great, but this has got to be your best work. Incredibly well done. Now time to go watch some anime!

Your videos always bring me back to the pure passion and admiration I've had ever since first starting to get into the medium around 10 years ago when I was 11-12yo and still in primary school. That absolute joy and wonder that I had experienced throughout highschool by getting deeper and deeper into everything that manga and anime had to offer. Thank you.

The influence that many of these backgrounds and aesthetics had on live-action cinema is really cool too. Probably my favorite example is how Cowboy Bebop was largely inspired by Blade Runner, but then went on to have its art direction be influential to Blade Runner's reboot, and then finally coming full circle and having Shinichiro Watanabe (Bebop's director) truly get his flowers by directing first an OVA and then a full anime series set in the blade runner universe.

Ok ok! So as someone who grew up with Heidi and spent some time in Scandinavia and Italy, both Heidi and 3000 Leagues are just phenomenal when it comes to capturing the feeling of those respective locales. 3000 Leagues, specifically. Does such a wonderful job of capturing coastal Italy. Holy cow. The way the towns climb the hills toward the skyline. The way the alleys twist and turn and you can almost smell the mustiness of the darkened corners that have existed in shadow for centuries. What really got me was that one shot of the hanging laundry. But it wasn’t the laundry that caught my attention (and my nostalgia). It was the building in the background. That combination. Of cracked, stuccoed building with salt-worn green shutters. That’s so quintessential Italian coast to me. Ghibli did an incredible job on the details in 3000 Leagues especially. (I’m very blessed to have been able to spend such time in such beautiful locations, and have such happy memories of it.)

I finally finished the video (I couldn't do anything else while watching because I didn't want to miss anything so it took some time) and now I find myself tearing up over a name I didn't know about four days ago. Your goal of making people appreciate anime backgrounds and the names behind them is undoubtedly reached. Before this video, out of the main people you talked about, the only name I knew was Oga and that's only because I was lucky enough to visit a Studio Ghibli exhibition nine years ago. I'm lost for words to express what this video made me feel. Thank you for spending so much time making it. I wouldn't be surprised if it inspires people into becoming background artists.

The care you put into this video is insane. Not only do you provide such thorough analysis, but your editing as well deserves its own praise. You could have easily just kept the green screen cut out in the corner, but you moved it to fit the context of certain backgrounds and even put a BUBBLE OVER YOUR HEAD when you were underwater. Your passion for creating videos is evident. Also got to mention your music choices. Such an amazing selection from a variety of media, and you paired each anime with background music that pair perfectly with the themes you discuss. Like I already said, your passion is evident. Keep up the incredible work!

I share a special connection with Mushishi because my aunt (who has passed away a while ago) showed me it when I was new to anime and i remember the countless cozy summer nights and cold winters I’ve sat in my room watching Ginko explore the beautiful countrysides and atmospheric landscapes of Japan with the immensely immersive ost to pair with it. It’s almost as otherworldly as getting high for the first time and I genuinely hold that series close to my heart because of how much I watched it as a kid with my aunt and its episodic format similar to my other favourite animes like cowboy bebop, samurai champloo etc. Practically all of the series you mentioned in this 4 hour passion project of yours explores and kinda reminds me why I’ve always been an anime old head and gravitated towards those shows because the backgrounds and art styles they had really are on a different level that even with the beautiful animation we get nowadays doesn’t really replicate that well at least in my opinion. Also I may not comment much on ur channel that much because I usually have everything you put on in the background while I’m working or grinding a video game or studying or something random but man I just wanna say thank you for everything you do and create because there’s not many places where I can find people that share my vast knowledge and weird interests with. its always a treat to stop by at this lovely pitstop when my life gets stressful or boring, untill next time my fellow internet friend 👍

I just finished the 1990's section, and I have to tell you this video has already had such a profound impact on me. I've heard of many of the older titles but i did not understand the through-lines of the artists and the evolution of the art itself... Watching this video i generated a list of movies and shows i'm excited to watch that were just names in articles I've read before. But most importantly, your presentation on these gorgeous backgrounds gave me the words to express what it is about anime that i've loved for so long. I think cinema is art in it's own right, but i've never been drawn to it the way I've been drawn to anime. Anime encapsulates so many forms of art and presents them so beautifully. Every pink sky and sunset I could close my eyes and see perfectly clear, every bush and tree drawn in Mononoke i feel as though i could reach out and touch it. My favorite show growing up was Revolutionary Girl Utena... And the feelings i had watching that show were (and are) so perfectly etched into my brain. I did not know Kobayashi's name before today but I will never forget it after this video. His watercolor style influenced me on my own art journey and I had no idea. I found out after looking up his name that last year in NYC they had an exhibition for him in November, and now I will be desperate to find more information about how and where i can see his works up close. This video has changed me, and I'm so thankful you made it. And another thing, the use of zelda, final fantasy, chrono music, and god so many other incredible VIBE BANGERS has truly enhanced the experience for me. Your cute chrono logo and the adorable editing you do.. i'm having a blast. Thank you again.

This video was in one word inspiring. Hi this is my first time at the pitstop, I'm a 14-year-old professional artist, musician, and depressed teenager (trust me its relevant later in this comment). For the last few years I've had an immense hunger to create something beautiful but I've never had the right "vibezzzzz" until I watched this video. With this hunger I've created so much but nothing that truly expressed how I feel the isolation, and hopelessness, then the light at the end of the tunnel but within 3 days of watching (I might add every minute of) this video I've started production on my own independent animated short film. ITS CRAZY, and all I can do is say thank you. If you want me to send it to you when Im done I can idk.

Excellent work as always, IP. I know this video was probably super tiring, but I think the results were definitely worth it. I hope you’re proud of yourself for this one, my guy. This was a video and a half. I have a ton I want to say, but I’ll just keep it to the main bits. Your use of music in this video (and, honestly, all of your videos) is, by far, my favorite thing about your work, man. First of all, the absolute staggering range of genres and artists you use is just… oh my god. One minute, I’m vibing to the blissful tones of the Breath of the Wild soundtrack. The next minute, you put on some haunting Nier sounds. Then you hit me with that Nujabes… and then, out of NOWHERE, I’m like “did this man just… start playing Frank Ocean?” And THEN you hit me with Meek Milly during a segment about the WIND RISES?? Bro, you had me buzzing the entire video just trying to guess what the heck you were gonna bump next. And all of that music just lifted the actual subject matter of the video to new heights. There were points where I didn’t know where a song might have come from, so I honestly assumed that was just the soundtrack playing in whatever scene you were showing, they fit THAT well with what was one being shown. Another thing I adore about the video was how you used references. I’m not just gushing about the member berries just because. I mean, the way you would describe the beauty of a background by, say, explaining how you would want to explore the castle in Lupin III like it was a Dark Souls area. The backgrounds already spoke for themselves, and your writing made them even more breathtaking. But using references like that and going in DETAIL with them got me hype like we’re friends talking at a sleepover. It was just so… I dunno, human? So human that it made this video feel that much more cozy. I don’t want take up too much of your time, man, but for real. You’re a goated one. I have absolutely no problem with officially saying that you are, without a doubt, one of my favorite artists right now. Not content creators. Artist. Anything that inspires me to want to get up and start creating in the middle of the night is art in my book. This video, and all of your others (especially that Twilight Princess one, that one was emaculate) has cemented you into my mind forever. Keep going man. You got something truly special here, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

Yo man thank you so much for this comment honestly one of the most heartfelt and genuine nice comments I’ve ever received. Truly humbled by it thank you so much! And I always love to hear ppl geekin over the music choices lol I spend a lot of time choosing songs lol like the dreams and nightmares meek mill beat got hit with copyright at first and I had to muffle it out a lot to fit in and reuploaded the vid just to keep that song in because it was way too important to the narrative of the video cause wind rises backgrounds deal a lot with dreams and how they become sorta nightmares and so the song was too fitting for that lol once again thank you for the comment and the love man!

straight up this video is absolute fire! I expected you to mention the Cowboy Bebop movie too! It has even more of the "mix of cultures" in the backgrounds with an entire part of the movie being Spike just asking people about the person hes looking for and everyone has these different styles and te backgrounds change so many times that it almost feels like different countries at points but always with some areas that make you recognize that he's still at the same planet! but your video is extremely detailed on your research! absolute masterpiece of an video essay
