When I was a Christian, I was watching "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" and one day, a particular scene made me think more seriously about my religion. It was the scene when Linus says, "Oops, I meant _when_ he comes! I'm doomed! One little slip-up like that can cause the Great Pumpkin to pass you by..." I remember thinking, "That poor fool! He believes in a fictional creature and when it inevitably doesn't grant his wishes, he's just going to say he didn't believe hard enough. Because conveniently, if it doesn't show up, he must've did something wrong..." Then I thought, "Wait a minute, that sounds a lot like Christianity..." Charlie Brown played a surprisingly big role in my deconversion.

As I deconstruct I constantly think about my time as a full blown hyper charismatic worship leader (with my husband) along with being a “boss babe” in It Works. It all ended when I had to have an emergency c section due to my daughter dying in my womb and I was in organ failure. My upline messaged me to keep posting about “my experience” so my social media would skyrocket/more sales and my pastor kept telling my husband and me that our “amazing testimony” of living through this TRAUMA will be so good to share when we have our first Sunday back(and share on social media to bring lost souls through the church doors). I was in survival mode for myself and my daughter and my husband literally almost lost us (in his words: “my world”). We began questioning and lining up how flipping manipulative it all was. All of it. My daughter was in the NICU for two months and was born at 1 and a half pounds. She’s a freaking rockstar at 5 years old now and we are free from that church and religion of manipulation.

On the topic of “you’re a worthless piece of poo”, I found it remarkable that the Barbies in Barbieland would accept compliments and awards with “thank you” and “I worked really hard so I deserve this”, contrasted with Kendom and Barbies giving Ken credit for Barbie’s accomplishments. People taking credit for their own hard work vs giving it to God/patriarchy.

It was over 50 years ago when I was in college, I had my first discussion with a Libertarian, Ayn Rand devotee. I kept going back to the Spaceship Earth analogy/wise stewardship. "There are natural iimits. There is only so much stuff." And he kept telling me that resources are limitless, bound only by our ingenuity, hard work, and economic freedom. Then I served a mission in Germany, and there was way too much Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People. While watching this video, it suddenly occurred to me that MLMs are the bastard child of libertarian economics and evangelical philosophy. Everyone is a temporarily embarrassed millionaire.

I had a friend go all Mormon, and I found out via his Fbook page. I hadn't heard from them for a few months when some mutual friends told me I "gotta check out [their] page! It's crazy!" - so I did, and I thought it was a joke cos it was just so... extra. (Like another friend who had the Subaru logo tattooed on his pec, full colour. So extra! Not in a good way. Super blown out, too.) But sadly, it was no joke; that once-agnostic friend had settled on heccn _Mormonism,_ of all the Jesus religions to pick. And became so... annoying? Naturally, they felt like they'd got everything figured out, but somehow ⛬ moved on from ig their "secular" past, nvm the religious & agnostic friends among us. (Though tbf not Mormon cos... no offence, but wut.) They were already "seriously" dating a cryptid (heh inside joke) & apparently, so heard on the grapevine, they were soon married - all within months after the "rebirth". That friend was just gone - made it clear with deafening silence that I & others were solidly a part of "the past" - but I do hope it went well for them. Even though they dropped us like that, and all cos they picked a crappy neo-religion. At least our faith-battling minister friend was cool. He went to seminary school, & it did shut down the sillier arguments that often went to "how do _you_ know?!" Like that _Xmas_ is not "erasing Christ"; it's literally just shorthand for _Christmas,_ even/especially for religious students. He said, "You have no idea how much it helped in our note-taking to just put 'X' in place of every time it says 'Christ'! Also, 'GOD' isn't capitalised like that anymore; it's just 'God' now." We may have played silly with the last bit & bugged him with questions like, "So it's just 'god' now? OK! god it is!" (He clearly meant "GOD" is now written as "God".) That one annoyed him, cos we were annoying about it. "You _know_ what I mean! Fine, you know why? I went to seminary school!" Anyway. There's nothing like reconnecting with an old friend reaching out to you on Fbook. And there's nothing like when you realise they never gave a hoot and just wanted your money &/or soul for their crappy MLM &/or religion.

I've had so many family members that have fallen into the MLM trap and they really just wanted to make ends meet. These companies prey on poor women and offer them a get rich quick option that they desperately want to be true so they can get out of really tough financial predicaments. Unfortunately, it's not just stay at home moms who are bored that fall for these scams and they have devastating outcomes for those who really need the money the most.

Ok, I'm just a few minutes in, but I have to preemptively chime in. It's apparent to me that the connection between religious beliefs, MLM's, and being a woman are overwhelming. My mother was an evangelical born again xtian, and so was my ex-wife. My mother did Rubbermaid (yes, they were an MLM before going retail). Avon, Jafra, Amway, and Party Lite Candles. My ex-wife did Princess House Crystal, Herbalife, Melaluca, and Party Lite. They both "invested" thousands of dollars in these ventures only to lose it all and end up with garages and storage areas packed with useless product. The connection of both of them also "investing" thousands in "seed faith" money to tv evangelists to end up with no financial return, but stacks of unread religious literature also. This is so freaking wild. I wonder why men are not as vulnerable to these scams? Edit: Oh, I forgot Mary Kay. My wife was obsessed with getting the pink Cadillac. I was like, "Why would you want to drive a big ass Pepto Bismol bottle?"

@VeronicaCorningstone
@VeronicaCorningstone Год назад
I think it is also due to the evangelical world's pressure (mileage varies between different denominations) to be a stay-at-home mom and avoid higher education. One-income with multiple kids isn't necessarily a feasible financial plan in the current economy. The MLMs capitalize on that desire to stay home with kids by pitching this as the perfect bridge between bringing in extra income and being a "godly" mother.

I think it's because men are expected and supported to get real jobs with real money outputs, and to handle and thus understandfamily finances. Women deprived of the training (I once got resume help from someone who thought my partner's mattered more because he was the man.) And opportunity ie. Housewives, are more likely to look into MLMs as ways around the restrictions or easier ways they can manage. Then surprise, the person not taught about finance and business falls into a scam.

I think you missed the purpose of the first step of the 12 steps. (I'm not in 12-step myself, and when I needed support, I specifically created a group that did not use the 12-step model, so this is not coming from a true believer in 12-step.) It was originally for alcoholics who are usually using alcohol as a way of controlling their emotions and often also believe they can control their consumption of alcohol. This does not work well for most alcoholics. They had to "admit they were powerless over alcohol" (which in other groups is made into "powerless over their addiction" and "powerless over the abuse"). I agree that the wording can be unfortunate, and is especially bad for people who are already too submissive. (Note that this is not the original target of AA -- back in the day, they tended to be more outwardly abusive alcoholics rather than submissive codependents.) In any case, the intention, the meaning, of the 12 steps, especially the first, is that they have to stop using the addiction or other avoidance behavior as a way of trying to control their emotions. I often see the 1st step as similar in spirit to "the Tao that can be known is not the Tao" in Taoism. It's to let go of the driving surface-consciousness part of the mind and allow deeper parts of the self, including the emotions they're avoiding with the addictive behavior, to come up. It's to get past the arrogance that makes people unable and unwilling to get help. They had to admit that they were powerless over their addiction and ask for help. Originally they said "from God"; then they changed that to "from a higher power"; and I think a lot of people now translate that again to mean, as I am saying, "from submerged parts of their self." It's not about just wallowing in shame and being pathetic.

Everything else is valid BUT: MLMs, as you’ve noted, target SAH moms, and a lot with smaller kids. Many WAH jobs require at minimum silence while you work, but almost all require that kids are not present/watched by someone else while you work. Plus, you have dedicated hours of on-camera training, and some require you to be on camera while you work. MLMs allow more flexibility in schedules and having kids present, which is why so many moms gravitate toward them. It’s really not as simple as getting a headset. If it were, sooo many more would be doing that. Saying from experience. *edit to say, experience from WAH, not MLMs

I think another big reason there’s so much membership overlap between high control religions and mlms is because when you’re in one of these churches, you outsource character judgements to the church. I grew up in a strict religious household and saw this all the time. If you see someone in church a lot, you just take it for granted that they’re a good person and wouldn’t try to take advantage of you. If someone seems smart in Bible study and can quote a lot of scripture off the dome, then they’re a smart person and they wouldn’t fall for a scam. If someone has a lot of nice clothes to wear to church or is able to donate a lot of money to the church, then you just assume that they’re financially stable. The big one that I see all the time with my family members is assuming that someone is doing things right if they’ve been married for a long time and have a lot of kids. My parents literally always vote for the Republican with the most kids, cos if they’ve got that many kids, they’re a good person. So those red flags that tell most people “this person is shady and you don’t wanna go into business with them” just don’t register. There’s no reason to distrust the woman who says she made a lot of money selling essential oils because she’s part of the in group and she wears pretty dresses, so she must be telling you the truth that she’s rich. There’s no reason to distrust the person who says getting into an mlm was good for their marriage cos they have so many children that their marriage must be doing great. Mlms take advantage of that same church naïveté that makes people leave their kids with creepy youth pastors or makes people handwave away credible accuasations of people mismanaging church resources.

💖 to Trevor for staying on track with the teetolal. (And 💖 to Damien for also being awesome!) And you're right: you're strong, and stronger than you think. I'm so glad that you're safely out of & away from the Church, and that pernicious mindset y'all mentioned of having to take yourself _down_ a peg and "accept" that you're nothing without God (and He gets all the credit for your wins, but bad stuff is your own fault &/or Satan?!). As y'all said, it's so prevalent in religion, especially the Xtian Church, and a cornerstone for most AA programs, but it's self-defeating and harmful. Plus, a lot of people who do AA/NA basically become members of the [X] Anonymous "Church", set up to fail and to feel such more guilt for any misstep along the way, but also drawn to coming back again & again. It's no wonder that so many ex-addicts become "born-again" Christians, notably those who have been in prison c/o _heavy_ proselytising (on top of all the other indignities prisoners are faced with). And I have to note, on the topic of prisons: the USA contains 5% of the world's population, yet it boasts 20% of the world's prison population. That's the highest in the entire world, per capita & otherwise, more than any other country, more than "Big C" (where over a BILLION people live!) "We're number 1!" they love to brag. ...I know that this a Canadian podcast, but I also know that statistically many USians are watching, and also, this isn't just a US problem; it's a worldwide problem, and should be known worldwide. Colonialism's tentacles still creep the planet to this day.

I was a producer and recruiter early on, so I was being pushed to be what they called the rabbit of the group. But because I’d have enough experience with toxic relationships and the church, I quickly spotted the gaslighting when they finally allowed the veil to come down. The way they sell these conferences is your business won’t go anywhere unless you’re there. Of course I didn’t believe that and it was Covid, so it was all online. Amway is run by the DeVos family, evangelical promoters of school choice and other problematic doctrines. Betsy DeVos was secretary of education under 45. Not to mention her problematic brother, Erik Prince, America’s Prigozhin and founder of Blackwater.

Hoooooly shiit that young living video. I watched way too much of that video (its like a car crash!) and you did not prepare me for the two guys getting up and singing, too. The comments on there are a hilarious combination though.

TBH the start of that YL song is actually decent, musically speaking. But I couldn't keep a straight face once the boys started playing and singing.

I'm sitting here listening to this and getting triggered 😂 I realize why I turned down so many things b.c church was enough of a MLM!! The more y'all brought up examples of what these MLMs do the more triggered I got!! For church I've done these productions which I learned a lot on HOW to put together the productions...which helped me develop as a professional...thts a bit different..but this is like: OMG...I can't!!😫😫😫😫 If this don't deconstruct folks, nothing will!!!😫😫😫😫

The way you're talking about how religion is used by a lot of people and takes away from their own autonomy and also like, I would say "overdoing" "humility" by acknowledging we're all limited in our own ways it feels like a really gross perversion of or replacement for actual community healing and support. Community care is so lacking in our culture it's like people will instead turn toward some fictionalized idea of a "higher power" (and possibly whatever community they can get from their church) because they don't actually have other people to turn to who will help them heal.

37:12 i have had that moment when im conversing with someone and everytime i make a point my brain finds a way to see the nuance in said comment so i add the nuance to the statement i had juat made. Then the person im conversing with DIDN'T need all that extra data set cuz they aggreed with you before the added info. Next thing that comes out is either a music lyric or a line of dialogue from a movie. It took years to understand why people i interacted with would reply in such a manner. I thought it was like a dis on my thought process. Since its yall and im out of thr equation i understand why a friend would response with some😢so off the wall its like they were not listening too and intentionally ignored you.....

I watched the video of the one, and I honestly think the three singers were lip sinking, her voice was too good, that takes years of training, and the guy kept moving away from their mikes, I could be wrong, but I think it was fake.

Saying "essential oils are useless" is basically saying the plant that the oil is from is useless too. Y'all need a Black person on this show desperately. Y'all sometimes just be saying anything.

@@hackman669 This is a song called Technochrist by Luxt. Given the name of the song. I assume it's about a like a futuristic version of Christ judging humanity because these are human behaviors. probably sins. who knows. but it's an interesting song and I've thought about it multiple ways. could also be about an antichrist. it's open to interpretation. but it definitely has religious themes.
