The oldest church in Suno (Italy) was built in 530 on top of an old pagan temple, then rebuilt in the 10th century and already mentioned as the central church of the whole plain in the 11th century. The church dedicated to the martyr saint Genesius has a very high Romanesque bell tower, built in 1100 and then raised in 1519. The bell tower houses a bell that rings a B flat note.
On 22 April 2012, lightning struck the bell tower, considerably damaging the structure. The lightning bolt, after striking the iron cross, had penetrated the structure and descended to within a few metres of the ground, ripping through the entire masonry and demolishing a large part of the east and north sides. The tower was secured and patiently rebuilt in its missing part, reinforcing the cracks that had also been created in the intact part. The tower was inaugurated in spring 2014.
The huge three-aisled church with imposing vaults was restored in 1347, when large windows were opened to allow proper lighting of the church. The restoration in 1733 changed the church to a Baroque style, a few years before it lost its title to the new church built in the centre of the village, dedicated to the Trinity at the direct wish of the Bishop of Novara. This transfer meant that the saints buried here were transferred in solemn procession to the new church. The parish was badly restored in the 19th century, when the ancient baptistery, the façade and the choir were barbarously demolished. Of the magnificent old building, only a piece of the vault and an exceptional 15th century fresco survived.
