Cold showering for 6-months. Boost in will power, wakes me up, reduces electricity bill, and I don't feel hot and stuffy. 10/10 recommend. I didn't adapt to it gradually. Just went balls-to-the-wall style by using every ounce of willpower to jump right in and scold myself.
GamerBoy69 Shivering cold is alright. The water doesn't have to be ice cold but it should be colder than room temperature. You will shiver at first, but remember that you should only be in the shower for 10-15 minutes. With time you will get used to cold water and won't shiver anymore (at least not as much). The first few times are the hardest but there's a reason why the channel's name giving this advice is called "the art of manliness" .
OnePercentBetter me too...no gradual crap, i just jump in. the best way to beat the cold is by controlling your breathing, take deep breaths and that cold shower is easy.
I would say some good old Banjo or Metal. Obviously for something more melo like this, a manly Banjo tune would be most fitting, but metal is still manly as fuck
+Pastabilities I think that cold showers could have two very different effects depending on whether the body wants to wake up or sleep. Cold showers could augment whatever the body wants to do. I am not sure of the mechanistic principles of the same but I believe it is got to do with circadian rhythm of a person.
Took my first cold shower. I initially started out with a hot, then thought "what if I tried a cold shower", and yes, they are effective. I feel awesome.
I'm a bodybuilder and I started taking cold showers to recover from my workouts, but that is not why I'm writing this comment, I've always had really bad depression and I can't take anti depressants cuz the side effect are very strong for me. When I was going through my worst bout of depression I would take 45 min cold showers, they are the ONLY thing that kept me feeling ok during that time, I hate to think that I might have committed suicide without them. They also have almost completely eliminated all body acne I have lol. I even did an experiment where I showered one side of my body cold and the other side warm lol, and I was only breaking out on the one side lol. So yah my point is that anyone who thinks cold showers aren't beneficial needs to try em, I will take them everyday for the rest of my life.
Crescendo lol yah for the average person about 10 mins is perfect, that's why I said during my "worst" bout of depression. It seemed like the longer I was in there, the better I felt. I still to this day, put my phone in a bag, and watch funny videos in the shower lol, cuz I used to do it during the 45 min showers to take my mind off the cold and it just kinda stuck with me. My roommate thinks I'm weird cuz I'll be randomly laughing in the shower. 45 mins was the average back then, the longest one I ever took was 1 hour and 32 mins, clocked it on my phone.
wow great to hear that you're okay man.. im having some hard times with depression at this time and im sure gonna try it out after reading your comment. one question, did you notice getting better immediately after taking a cold shower or did it take you a while to get better?
hugh mungus thx man, no one understands the true agony of depression until they experience it. I fondly call it "the darkness", ya know when I was a teen i used to make fun of people that had it(manifested when I was about 19), what a fucking fool I was. Depression is part of the reason I got into bodybuilding, fitness and it's pursuits are the only thing that keep me going, it's the raft I cling to in my sea of despair lol, fitness has saved my life lol, that is for sure true. If you are having problems consistently then I would definitely look into that as well, it is better than anything. But of course to your question, I would say at least 10 mins for it to start relieving the depression, in COLD water, not no pussy shit lol. I SERIOUSLY recommend just putting your phone in a Ziploc bag and watch your favorite RU-vid channel, it will be unbearable at first lol, start with hot and switch to cold, don't just go straight in. Now I look forward to them lol, I say if you can make it a full 20 mins you will feel SO much better, sometimes I would take 3 to 4 a day when it was bad lol, but they do work. Just put on a 20 min video and start watching it and try to forget about the cold till the video ends. It will get easier with time, I take a 6 min warm and 15-20 min cold every morning and afternoon after work. The only time I notice the cold anymore is when it's the dead of winter lol, cuz that shit isn't far above freezing.
Section8dc Thanks for writing this man. I'm working on getting out of a depression and your story inspired me to take cold showers when I'm feeling like shit. I know nothing about you and it's none of my business but I do wonder if you work on getting out of your depression in other ways as well. Like therapy and self reflection and shit like that?
thank you very much for the information. i am 19 years old and all of this started happening to me just this year. so i'm very desperate to ''escape'' it as much as i can.
Definitely worth it ! I'm currently on my 5th day and see amazing improvements in my mood, confidence, skin, and hair. Now that I'm thinking about it, it's becoming an addiction xD
I stopped my life on its tracks for 2 years to try and deal with some internal issues (emotional/psychological). As I tried a bunch of stuff and read a lot of stuff, practical stuff like cold showers, waking early, taking walks/running (used to do that at the beach), journaling, eating fruit, lowering/stopping masturbation and porn consumption, reading/studying, being honest to myself, meditating after waking up/before sleeping and having a routine were among the top things that had perceptible effects. When I was doing all those things together, it was the time I felt the best on my whole life. It felt insanely good. I didn't manage to keep most of these up, because I was just testing them since I still had a lot of internal shit to sort out before focusing on the external. Now I'm ready to start making some external changes, and it's funny how most (if not all) things I tried are covered by your videos. A lot of great info on your channel, I wish you great success. Thanks!
+Gabeux I did all that you listed here, and I also let Jesus enter me. It felt heavenly good, especially since I'd stopped masturbation and porn consumption prior to accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior. BDSM is really great!
Basically the cold shower tricks your body into thinking it's under more danger or stress that it is. In turn it adjusts to a more dangerous situation which means making you healthier, manlier, more energetic, more able to deal with such situations.
+JackFknTwist1 I think they mean the fact that nobody initially really wants to take a cold shower, and when you try it out for the first time it's quite a shock. It takes a good amount of discipline to stick it out until you adjust to it.
I am 17 years old and have been taking cold showers for half a year. And have been reading and watching AoM for a year. I come back every so week and rewatch all the videos. I can say this has helped me immensely, just great bits of knowlege I wish I knew earlier in my life.
+Simon Belmont Hey, that sounds great. I´d like to start too with those practical changings in my life. My fear is or was that this is placebo in a way. So maybe the easiest way is just to do it :D Am I right ? How do you feel now? After what you've said, great! ^^ How is your hair and skin ? Greets Chris
Cold showers are awesome, I have felt more invigorated since taking cold showers, some days twice a day. Body shape has changed I guess from less fat cells. I am feeling a lot more healthier and happier.
inutiasha i know it's true. when i was a kid we lived in a house my dad was rebuilding. there were times we didn't have various things, like electricity, or hot water, or water of any kind! heat. and we lived in New Hampshire. 8 cords of fire wood to keep the house "bearable" during the winter. but whatever, i was just a kid and what did i know. to me it was all perfectly "normal." one of those rebuilds was to dig a new well. we had to truck in our water every few days or so using a 500 gallon tank used for collecting maple sap. (my dad was into sugar season and maple syrup, anyway...) every flush of the toilet, every drop of water, my dad was there like some nazi making sure we didn't waste any of it. i was introduced to the "navy shower." today this would be considered child abuse, but at the time my dad was like, you get in, turn on the water (cold), get wet, turn it off. then you stand there, shivering your ass off and soap up. once you're "clean" you turn the water back on (cold) and rinse off and once you're finished you turn the water back off again. it was fucking brutal! i got the ritual down in under 3 minutes. i shit you not. i wouldn't take another cold shower if my life depended on it ;-) lol
I am now on month two of cold only showers every morning and sometimes a second cold shower in the evening if I need that extra boost/punishment lol highly recommend cold showers 🚿
The timing of this video is epic for me and my family. Our hot water heater died this morning. It lost its life long battle to rust. Noe our family will be taking cold showers until Thursday. Thanks for helping us find the brighter side.
+Real Yes. Mass immigration into European countries combined with interracial breeding combined with low white-white couple birth rates = white people are getting fewer and fewer.
I'm not going to say cold showers were definitely the solution, but after three years of trying to conceive I started experimenting with natural ways to increase testosterone. Mostly this involved different workouts, a slight change in diet and cold showers. A few months later we found out we were pregnant, with identical twin boys :) Big thanks to Art of Manliness website for the posting about the benefits of cold showers a while back.
This Video CHANGED MY LIFE, I first watched this video on the day it was uploaded, and since then I have been taking cold showers. I can confirm all the benefits detailed in this video. Cold showers have been an amazing supplementation in my weight loss. I have lost over 120lb over the past year and taking cold showers have helped tremendously. I just don't feel like myself if I told wake up and go to sleep with a nice brisk of cold water in my day. I just wanted to give a huge THANKYOU to the "Art of Manliness" Team!
five years in the cold showers, started of a need to be clean, when our water boiler broke down, so i jumped in cold showers for a month or so, then i realised, that it has some good impact on my energy and did it everyday. Now i reveal all the benefits of it so thanks for the video
Hi Art of Manliness I just wanted you to know that after I watched this Video about 8 Month ago I started showering cold. Every Morning! Ever since I experienced some positive changes in my life: It has becom easier for me to get up in the morning. I feel more powerfull in the first hours of the day. I feel overall more warm the whole day (which is nice in winter but not sooo nice in summer). And the very best: My skin (neurodermatis) has become significantly better. Thats why i really wanted to thank you very much for this video, that has inspired me to change a little thing in my life, that has now turned out to be a not so little benefit for me. Thanks! -jimihenrik
Cold showers actually help me in the mornings. If I take warm showers, I tend to stay in the shower for 20-30 minutes. Cold showers expedite this process, since I don't particularly enjoy being in ice cold water for any more than 3-5 minutes.
Franco Selem YES! very true but also working up the nerve to turn on the showe thinking "fuccckk this is going to be cold" sometimes takes up about 2 min of my time. Eitherway much faster than a warm shower anyway
For 6 months of the year, lukewarm water is all I can get for a "cold shower". I would need a water chiller attached to the line to be able to get a cold shower. Phoenix is a hot place.
I take cold showers all the time. They never improve my mood because I just yell at my brother for flushing the toilet despite knowing I'm in the shower at 6 AM every single day.
Dloweification Same. I'm the cold one. Still my inevitable death comes soon. Because everything is so hard and meaningless. I love the freediving thing, but school killed my passion. Just makes my mood good in the mornings.
I watched this video after taking my first cold shower and I don't think I've ever focused on anything this well in my life. I feel so present and out of the haze that usually follows me around.
I started taking cold showers almost a month ago. I had never heard of the benefits until a friend mentioned it to me when I asked about ways to keep hair tame, and looking smoother with less frizz. The idea shocked me. I had never heard of it before. I researched it, and sure enough, lots of other people (and credible people) are saying the same thing. The very first day I took a cold shower, it was instantly noticeable that my skin was shining. It was very vibrant. My hair was very smooth and had no frizz. (I normally have very curly and frizzy hair.) That was enough for me. I hate my curls and frizzy hair. I dread stepping into ice cold water every day. But I do it because I dread the frizz in my hair a lot more. Cold showers have worked wonders for me. Even eliminated 90% of my very bad acne! With these incentives, I will make cold showers an every day part of my life. Never going back. P.S. Another thing that cold showers have done for me is dramatically increase my self control. If you can make yourself freeze every morning and every night in ice cold water, you can do anything. I no longer procrastinate in anything.
Tip: I found that jumping in head first is the way to go. I was never able to make much progress starting warm then dialing down. It may have to do with activation of the mammalian diving response as the cold water hits your face. I went from only doing 30 painful second of full cold to doing a regular 5 min shower.
you know what ? you are one of the best channels on youtube who explained VERY GOOD the cold shower whole benefits smartly and deeply. morning cold showers should be a daily routine for everyone
My Father never let me shower in hot water, not only because of the benefits listed but because It builds up character to jump head first into any situation. It is a very manly thing to do.
So thorough!! Thanks This had more info than all ten articles i read combined. Wim Hof should post this video on his website lol. Loved the part about the rats and the psychology(or biochemistry?) and anxiety and learned helplessness. Thanks!!
I also find it increases overall willpower, patience and similar virtues. I guess it's because if you can make yourself plunge under an ice cold shower, you can make yourself do anything.
Been taking cold showers since Im a small kid. Grandpa thought me that way and now tbh Im glad he did. Great Channel. Greetings and thanks for all the tips man.
I was so against cold showers when I recently started to hear about them being so beneficial. Yesterday when I took a shower I thought that I should have a go at it, and I must say that I now understand what the hype is all about. I took a cold shower this morning and I feel a difference in a great way. I'm definitely with it, and I will be doing this from now on 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I read the article you had on your site and I got to trying it right away. Its fucking amazing in SO many ways, I shit you not! Being black and all I've always had problems ashy ass skin, and when finding out more benefits I followed through and I haven't looked back and can't go without one. I've gotten to having just straight cold showers, I always feel so rejuvinated
When I went to military school we didn't have heated showers, which sucked at first but once I got used to it it helped a lot with energy and stuff. Great video :D
awesome video well captioned I thoroughly enjoyed it. I've been taking cold showers for nearly a week now and I agree with everything that you say in your video, I also hope that I can start growing facial hair and not just here in the process
I hate every moment under cold shower with passion.. BUT the after effects on me are unbelievable! Everything in this video is true. If you can stay under ice cold shower for like 2 or 3 minutes, you can do whatever fuck you wanna do during the day because you are a boss! That feeling of being largerst lion on savanah is guaranteed.
I just took a cold shower, I said to myself. I won't take a cold shower, I'll start this experiment tomorrow. My water changed on it's own and I felt great afterwards, serval minutes later and I feel really tired but relaxed, before I was very anxious and uptight. 10/10
Listen, I've been doing it for about a week. It's pretty awesome. Of course, my story is anecdotal but it works for me. It wakes me up and improves my mood throughout the day.
+Sevir Rosis Not mentioned in the video is that the sudden drop in temperature pushes blood pressure way up. So any susceptibility to strokes and you might not be able to climb out of that shower. Not emphasied enough is that showers should be brief. Ask any diver what happens when exposed to cold for too long. Yes they may be good when you are healthy and your circulatory system is sound but they wont be curing anything. Your dad aint so dumb. And remember, you just made yourself 'Son of Dumb'.
+Philip Jones What?.. That's like saying you shouldn't do cardiovascular exercises because it brings your blood pressure up, and therefore you might just then have a heart attack.
+SillyBehavior With cardiovascular exercise that even old people can do, you build up the pressure gently. In a shower the pressure jump is considerably quicker. Its the difference between making love with your wife and a stranger you just met. I'm not talking internal body cooling here, which is why divers spend so much keeping warm but the initial shock. Most of us can walk in to a cold shower with no issue. Above a certain age then you need to check with you doctor. Otherwise if the cold makes you feel faint then take it steady. Hate to think of my mum dragging me senseless out of the shower.
I actually was excited to take cold showers at first, than it turned into me having to force myself to turn the lever to blue, but its totally worth it! I get more energy than a cup of coffee afterwards
started 2 days ago and I have found a new love for cold showers. It gives me so much energy in the morning it's unexplainable and it lasts throughout the day. I will admit my first day I felt like my soul was yanked out my body and I was struggling to catch my breath but once I got over it it was the greatest feeling.
I tried my FIRST cold shower today and hilariously recorded the experience. Check it out!: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-INYhnDRg1R0.html
After watching this very same video 2 weeks ago, I have had a cold shower every day since. I can totally vouch for the following benefits: -Muscle recovery -Mood Improvement -Softer, smoother, better looking skin -Amazing, soft, shiny, bouncy hair. -Heightened 'mojo' -Simultaneosuly awakening and relaxing. Strangely. After a few days, you don't need to force yourself. You become totally addicted and find yourself joyfully dropping the temperature like a weirdo to as low as possible. Do it people!
Just perfect the mood you set ,when ur telling the information , probably the background music helping to set that mood, Bt whatever it is , Ur vedios are enjoyable with plenty of good info :D
I tried it this morning. It is invigorating and I understand how it could help with depression as the feeling makes me feel giddy like it's a good shock to the body.
Very nice what a perfect way of explaining helping Great work Best wishes really enjoyed watching you are great actor nice human being and above all helping the people Weldone
What humans want tends not to be a reliable guide to what they need. Cold showers tend to be more beneficial the less attractive they seem. In traditional high latitudes cultures, from the Scandinavian Artic to the Patagonian Subantarctic, there was a major decline in populations which adopted western ideas around heating and clothing. In Patagonia, missionaries persuaded what they mistook for their "flock" that it was sinful (and ineffectual) to follow their usual dress code (nudity) given that it was fecking cold. It turns out that wet clothing was far more problematic to survival than nudity in a windy part of the world where it ALWAYS rains. They had no way to get clothing dry because there were no modern building materials, and no access to electricity or fossil fuels, and entire populations died out as a result. The reason coldness is good when it's in the form of a cold shower is that it is episodic. Having your body heat wicked away 24/7/365 by wet clothing exposed to fast moving cold air is not episodic, and not survivable.
positively surprised! reading the title and channel name I prepared for random weirdness but instead found another interesting science/knowledge channel. thanks!
I like standing under the shower, flip it to the coldest setting, and splash! It is kinda unbearable for the first 10 seconds, then somehow you start to like it...
Art of Manliness I usually shower at around 37°C and end a minute with 30°C, which is pretty cold but nice. But to get the full effect, I should get down to ~18 or 20°C?
Koskain Anglophile Cold is a relative term, therefore I'm asking what would be a useful definition of cold in this case. There has got to be some (imaginative) graph of effect vs. temperature.
Vincent Keltjens I consider 18 - 20°C a mild summer day. Maybe it's because I am from Germany or because I live in Canada, but my room temperature is 18°C... So yeah, you should take a shower that is colder than room temperature (and I'm not talking wussy 23°C room temperature, as it is common in the U.S.). When I was a child I frequently went swimming in the Baltic sea which is usually around 15°C, which is pretty nice and easy to get used to. I consider everything above that to be warm.
I advise to start with a normal temperature shower then bring the heat down. It's much less shocking and feels nicer, and is easier to get into a habit of doing.
thats fine i guess but i find it way more beneficial to start cold. the build up and nervousness of jumping in a cold shower truly tests your mental strengthm
