7:36 this is the heart of the issue, right? And it really appears that you are talking about EQ here. There is so much nuance to this topic, that nobody seems to be able to explain the value of a preamp in a meaningful way. Think about it, nobody needs an explanation of a Wah pedal, fuzz, chorus, envelope filter, synth, flange, vibrato, or EQ! If preamps only offer compression, overdrive, EQ, gain, increased volume, what's the point?? All those things are either on the amp, on the bass or on individual pedals that offer more versatility. The audience will never notice the preamp live. Recording is another issue, but all that can be done to a clean direct signal by the DAW. Am I missing something?

im still trying to figure this out at the moment i dont really see the point of DI, pre amp or compression. it seems like bro science. i understand having a pre amp for another EQ to turn on and off but with the compressor thing why would someone wanna hinder there ability to do dynamics.

When I started to play gigs with backline amps I started to use a Sansamp. I send the XLR signal to the PA and use the amp as a stage monitor.

same. some FOH engineers look at me funny when I tell them to pull the bass signal from my DI and not the amp. but every time afterwards they go on about how massive the tone was. when I do flying gigs or small gigs I just bring the sans amp. perfect little rig. thanks for watching.

So true! I have the Behringer BDI 21 as my pre-amp and I must say what a shaper these things are!

Interesting for sure. I'm not using anything like this right now but I'm probably going to start.

Great video - The band said the GK112 has to go mainly because of the bleeding into all the mics - This video helps me make my decisions

I've played a few shows where the backline has been shared between the bands and the sound guy only wants to use the DI from amp, If I have to do this, then I will always stick the Amp DI to pre EQ so I can mess with the amp settings without effecting my FOH signal. Sound guys used to be scared of my old Warwick head as the DI signal was so hot.

yea all that sounds good. I usually try to set the amp flat (maybe drop the bass a little) and then send my preamp output in the input of the amp. that way they are getting as close to my signal as I can without them pulling a direct DI. I did a casino gig up in NY where I didn't even have an amp. my signal came from the DI to FOH and then i heard everything from monitors and subs. it was probably one of the best sounding venues I ever played at.

So if you are at home and you are using that board are you going into the front of the amp or return? sorry trying to understand this stuff im very fresh to this
@ShawnCav

if im home and recording with that board or more specifically that Preamp I will typically take an XLR and go right into an interface into the computer. if im just looking to play through my amp I will take the 1/4" output and run it into the front of the amp because thats the coloring I want to the signal. if I wanted to avoid having any coloring from the amp itself I would use the return in the back of the head and bypass all the amp settings outside of just the volume control. but Id recommend just going through the front of the amp to get started.

@@ShawnCav oh ok so either way is ok just more preference but if you want the true stage some you go direct to interface or to return to avoid the amps preamp

You're not alone in not understanding, and I am very much not new to this. Preamps are really nonsense.

The sansamp is the original OG bass driver DI. Even a $500 darkglass doesnt quite have the mojo the sansamp does
