There are plenty of ways to get people on your side when they don't seem to like you. The 'Benjamin Franklin Effect' is but one of them. It basically argues that if you do something kind for a person who dislikes you, the person is presented with an experience of cognitive dissonance. If you acted in such a way so as to compliment this person, then they must have done something positive for you. People only tend to do favours for people they like. If they did you this favour, then why should you still harbour negative feelings towards them?
Thus, attitudes change.
However, in the context of groupthink and a striving towards power and control, there are things that could get out of hand. The clinical counsellor, Simon Brown explains.

I completely agree with Simon's point of view on free expression and debate as being extremely important, yet underrated. I'm saving the full podcast video to watch later. Thanks for all the great work you do!
