These microphones are rated at 20dB (A) probably work ok in a public environment, but not the choice for quiet scenarios, they would be a waste of money for any serious field recording, the rode NT5 with 14dB self noise would be the low end budget option, not this.

As a drummer, I know lewitt for the drum kit mics set, and thoses are really designed to be placed as overhead on drums For field recording, it seams to me that they're a bit harsh on the high, wich is good for cymbals, but can be a bit aggresive for more mechanical sounds

Wow !! The Austrian lewitt LCT 040 are an excellent choice for their great value for money !! We can hear a very little distorsion in the high frequency probably coming from the preampli of the Tascam DR 60D mark 2. Lewitt are now my next purchase !! Thanks for your video.

Looking up the specs for those mics they have 20dBA self noise. Fine for noisy environments like London but I suspect not so good for quieter locations.

i am about to do the same thing. i will use the t.bone SC140 stereo pair. they are advertized with 9,2 dB(A) self noise. marketing aside they maybe have 10 or 11 which should be great even for silent situations. a set for 99 each also seems cheap to me. i will test them and then tell you if they actually great or crap. also there is another not that cheap option, the SE Elekronics SE8 stereo set, 369€ maybe it helps.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. Someone else also suggested the LCT 040 match pair but since these are sold as instrument microphones I was wondering if they would be good at picking up signals from a larger distance when used outdoors. Your walk through London made me decide these are great mics, that piece with the street musician was a real WOW. At first I thought you added a bit of music in the studio so I had to go back twice to look and listen again. The water sounds at Sloane Square give a good indication of what the Lewitts can do. The Tascam DR-60DMkii is a great recorder. I have this one for a few years now and love it, great microphone inputs with very low noise which is perfect when I need to crank up the preamps a bit too much to get a good sound level. When I bought this one, the Zoom recorders had more noise on the preamps

Thanks for the great video mate, Do you think this setup will provide better sound than using a H5 or a H8. I am looking to do more run and gun but also want noise free crispy ambient sounds, any tips are appreciated 🙏
@TheCameraManReviews
@TheCameraManReviews 2 года назад
The real gem in this set up is the Lewitt mics, they are incredible. Now I would say that they would perform better than any build-in mics on a recorder, like the H5 or H8 ones, but then again if the lewitt's were plug into the H5 or H8, that would be some set-up. The Tascam used in this video, the Dr60-Mkii does produce incredibly clean audio. Its pre amp are amazing. But its interface and build isnt the best. It takes 4 AA batteries as standard, and when using the Lewitt Mics with it, the 4 batteries would last approx. 15minutes (AWFUL). So you do need a battery bank, adding to the weight of the set-up. This set-up for me produces incredible audio results for the cost. I guess if I could afford to go for a better field recorder then I would. But its not essential. GOOD LUCK! and let me know what you choose.

But the LCT 040 are only 14.6 mV/Pa sensitivity, and self noise high at 20dB, so probably not good enough for ambient sounds in nature ? On paper they could do with better specs for nature sounds, but urban soundscapes should be fine. Thx for clip

Tascam is great but for the quiet source recordings it have too much of a noise. For recording road traffic, speech or loud sounds is fine but if you start to record ambience like, birds, wind in the forest or water stream sound, bonfire etc it will add noise to the recording and for professional production is a big NO because you won't be able to remove this in the post-production process. If you have a tip on how to avoid the white noise while mic gain is only halfway then let me know. Rising a gain introduces more noise but if you don't do this then you will have a quiet recording whereas if you add compression and limiter in post-production it will also bring this (quiet but significant white noise) that Tascam produces when recording is ON. So it seems like Tascam will only record loud sounds in quality that can be used professionally. I would love to hear your thoughts about this. Maybe there trick that can be done to avoid this in recordings with Tascam. Let me know, Many thanks!
@walkandcamera
@walkandcamera 6 месяцев назад
Not bad... But you should have used some separation between the two microphones. Better yet, put them in a binaural setup (no idea how you would do that...). The only problem was that there was little directionality to the sound, I couldn't tell what was coming from the left and what was coming from the right.

This may well be the best budget option, but there are vastly better microphones for the job tbh. Have a look into the Sennheiser MKH8000 series. Or the similar Schoeps. Honestly I find this a bit muddy and washy, the lewitts are a bit overwhelmed in this situation. Defo a great option for a hobbiest though.

Great settup and video. One thing though, how did you deal with handling noise from the cables? I have similar microphones and tried this settup and I got great audio besides all the handling noise which ruined the recording. Not too worried because it was just a test at home.

@@TheCameraManReviews, nature ambience, birds, insects etc. When you close to the sound and the sound is loud (lige nightingale song in spring or grasshoppers in summer) - there is no issues. But in quiet locations self noise is very notable. I use tascam dr-100 MK3 with buit-in mics and Clippy XLR EM272 with this recorder. Clippys is much better, but still not ideal. Very nice setup, but I have a question about how well the setup will do for mobile field recording on a nature walk. I am trying to record nature sounds while hiking and looking for a setup that will capture the ambient sounds, such as birds, insects, and streams, without capturing my footsteps while moving at a typical hiking pace. I intend to have a Lavalier mic for my vlog voice recording, and I plan to have an assistant carry that field audio rig. In post-production, I will layer the ambient audio under the voice audio to get an immersive experience but without the annoyance of the footsteps for 120 km while trekking to Mt. Everest Base Camp.

Hello does it fit the windscreen rode ws8 to lct 040 because I see that the diameter of lct is 22.86mm and the diameter of ws8 is 20mm, also ws9 is 22mm. Please can you help me because I wanna buy a good windscreen for my lct

It certainly does, it is a tad tight, but the rode windscreens have a rubber O ring that stretches. And what is great is the LCT 040's have a gap that the o ring fits in nicely.

If you are in a city, probably what is called RF noise. You need to shield your cables.

The best ambient audio field recording set up? Absolutely not. Not even close. A good budget option. Sure. How ever those mics do sound decent and I'd have no issue using that audio in a professional setting.
@laflamme7782
@laflamme7782 Год назад
Even thou this is a year old video, your setup is really not the "best setup ever", whether you are on a budget or not. Microphones are way too noisy and the recorder is not really that good. You can get better mics (even cheapo tbone sc140 are better) and better recorder (even zoom h6 is better) for the same price as your setup. I felt like saying this, cause titles like this mislead people...

Those are not the best microphones and you're not using the best AD converter, so no.

I don't believe you that this is the best setup ever, your recordings don't sound that good to me. Many microphones will sound better than your recordings.
