The best thing my FLGS did was to bring in ProAcryl, specifically the Ninjon and VincieV custom colors - seriously, you guys are amazing. PS, I'll be cosplaying as Darrell at Adepticon next year.
Paints are one of those things that you know you don't need but when you see a brand you haven't tried or a color you like but from a diffent brand you just want to try them and getting one or two isn't satisfying enough Makes me feel better about my paint racks though This was a fun video :)
I feel like Miniac used to very deliberately ape Alton Brown's style. Pulling out illustrative charts and giving a basic overview of the physical processes in things like airbrushing. I kind of miss that, but I guess there's only so much you can go over in that style.
Two Thin Coats are my current go to for almost anything I'm painting unless I have a pro acryl equivalent. Great colors similar to citadel but in a much better dropper bottle and a better price for what you get. I have wanted to try AK paints but they are not easy to track down here in Maine.
Michigan Toy Soldier has the AK paints AND they often have weekend sales. Might be good to wait for one of those sales and use that new coupon. They also have a ton of art books and other tools.
The more paints I own, the worse I feel about not painting as much as I should. This is a good enough reason for me to buy more and more paints! And I'm jealous of your 1700+ pretty paints!
Golden SoFlat has more colors now, I love that paint :). Have you tried the new Vallejo Game colors? Their new formula paints like a breeze, I'm quite impressed tbh.
And I thought I was a huge paint goblin . Seriously, I love collecting paint, any color that is pretty, I want it. We are like dragons and paint is our treasure hoard. Also nice new tat
I'm like the anti of this. Been painting since early 1990s. Always got rid of old ranges, when I moved on. The last time was from Vallejo (minus the metallics) to Kimera. I donated all of my working Vallejos to a friend. I now have just a few focused specials from Golden and other manufacturers. The only thing I haven't gotten rid of is original Citadel washes from the late 1990s (if memory serves), but I rarely use them now, as Kimera and Golden do it for me. It's exactly as you said, an artsy way of painting, but it works for me (I have about 35 years of painting with water colours now, so).
Where did you get those paint shelves from? Was it something else converted to paint shelf or did you found those somewhere online? I'm really like the ones from: 7:50, 9:00, 11:50, 14:30. Also will your AK shelf from 17:20, be able to hold many citadel pots? Thanks for any info! 👋
I absolutely love the AK 3rd gen, Ive been transitioning to them from Vallejo Model Color, only downside is that the dropper part of the bottles almost always cracks and makes a mess. Some vibrant colors for the new Vallejo Game Color are pretty cool, and the Xpress line although small in range, is great and dries very mat. Vallejo also has a less known range, Mecha Colors, intended for airbrush, but the steel metallics work wonder by brush, their primmers are nice too, a bit satin. You have some hidden gems too in the Vallejo Airbrush paints, such as a Black Metallic.
AK 3rd gem, Kimera and scale 75 are all people need. I legit vouch by that. AK 3rd gen is like other stuff but ten times better. kimera is just very solid for what it does and scale 75 is different yet excellent when mastered, beyond anything imo. (scalecolor i'm talking about mainly).
I'm just glad there's people with larger hoards than me. I was tempted to back the recent UltraKryl Kickstarter, but denied myself after realizing I just backed 5 full different sets on various Kickstarters over 2 years and still have only used about 5% of them. I wonder what Vincent V and Barbatos Rex hoards look like? They must have rooms full.
I didn't back that one due to the timeline. 2024 isn't that far away but I have enough paints to last me until '24 and if I hear good things about them, I'll pick them up off the rack.
As someone who use Scalecolor artist range in almost every project i like that i know what consistency im getting every time and dont have to violently shake my bottles before every use.
I have the full range but have barely touched them yet. The first try was a bust so went back to ProAcryl for now. I need to sit down and work with them and learn to use them. My main goal with them was to actually use them thicker and go for more of a sketch/"painterly" style, but also need more practice for that. Also they have some amazing colours!
@@derekgarcia3069 they definitely require a little more work to make right. I would watch some Craftworld Studio videos they are big users of that range.
I cannot second this enough. Scalecolor's Artist Smooth range are the only paints I own (including Warcolours, Citadel, Golden, AK, Vallejo, and Daler Rowney) that transfer/blend so smoothly right out of the tube that it's almost like I can feel it *through* the brush (in a good way!) They're like painting with butter (again, in a good way!) Their only downside is that you can't-or at least shouldn't attempt to-airbrush them.
@@derekgarcia3069give them a try. I find the best way to use them is to 'massage' your thinner or water into the paint on wet palette. They have a lot of fine pigment and this needs to get flowing.
Scalecolor heavy body paints are actually my favourite mini paints. I do a lot of colour mixing and they have the best magenta I've found. I'm honestly at the point where Id rather thicker paints. It just works better for how I paint. and for airbrushing I still go back to army painter paints.
I feel like I would get decision fatigue when trying to paint with this many paints. Which is why I've given away 90% of my paints. I kept my inks and artist paints for airbrushing, and a set of craft paints for dry brushing or terrain making. All of my other paints are artist oil paints. Oil paints have made me enjoy painting because acrylic paints were not super fun (if you aren't having fun painting, try oils. they are so much fun to paint with).
@Ninjon - Would love to know more about your paint racks! Especially those that would fit Reaper / AK. They look like 3d print. I cut alot of PVC pipe to create vertical storage. Cheap but gets old. Thanks for your Proacryl set btw. They have more paints in their range hitting retail real soon so you'll need more room for them. I do love P3 but only have an armful. Just got some army painter. Not what I expected and dissapointed. I don't think I will ever be a speedpainter!
The biggest upside to tube paints is that you don't get air into your paint when used. Bottle paint will dry in the pot faster and faster the less paint remains. If i had the option all my paints would come in tubes since most paints needs to be thinned anyways.
Ninjon never less than watchable. You can tell the confidence he has in the interest of his audience by the way he gets his full sponsor messaging done before he even gets going. And he's right.
This honestly helps. Giving permission to just paint a thing, and for it not to be a Golden Demon award winner is a thing I sometimes just need to hear.
I am late to this but I REALLY liked your video about your Favorite paints. I found some really nice gems. On tjis list you mentioned spirit blue, poison green, leather brown and dark shade. What made your opinion shift from one extrem to the other? Kinda suprised hearing that j
This does make me feel better about my (much smaller) paint collection! Even if you don't use them, I think it's still pretty cool to have as a collection.
Someone deleted my comment :O You can purchase Kimera paints individually. Either from their website or in some shops. It is available in our local shop in hungary for example. About the last questions. I feel like we have too many paints. I have recently moved over almost exclusively to Kimera paints. I kept my old paints as well and use some (like nuln oil) and have some cherri picked ones, like AK 3rd gen metal paints. But I try to limit my palette as I do not actually need so many colours. It is fine to mix my own and I really wanted to learn colour theory. Kimera paints are cheap compared to other brands if you factor in how much is in one bottle. They are one of the cheapest ones out there and you have a lot of milage with one pot. But man the consistency is all over the place :D I might later get some more AK paints as I tend to enjoy them a lot. Much better than several paints in the GW range. I'll also still keep some GW around as there are neat ones I tend not to find elsewhere. Like the specialty ones for effects.
You have Citadel hexpads, the new version, with the fancy latcht on top. That still is the new version of Citadel paints for me. I have the full collection of hexpads with screw tops.
Not telling you what to do, but if you hypothetically started a second channel featuring exclusively Daryl doing Daryl stuff, I would religiously watch each of those videos as soon as they drop.
You sir, are not alone. I have at least 6 different paint ranges ( a few here , a whole range there etc.), and a large-ish double door closet filled with models( mostly Tank models as that was the last obsession). I will say , 3d printing has saved me from being buried under a "Tsunami of Grey". Now I just have to save up for a 10Tb RAID server to hold all the "Digital Grey" that I have. I think I still have a kidney left...
Question about the so-flat, I think some of their colors, like yellow from the box set, use toxic pigments. Have you ever seen this as being a problem for anyone beyond maybe avid-brush-lickers? Like for playing and etc.
I keep a spare, unopened pot for all my paints, so if I run-out mid session I know there's always a replacement at hand. Now, I exclusively use Kimera, so that's just 13 extra pots.
Fellow paint hoarder here. I find myself migrating towards the Scale 75 Artist colours more and more. Yes, they have to be thinned down, but BUT!. If you are like me and only have about 30min per day for painting, they hold up SUPER well on the wet palette. I load my palette for the week on Monday, and by Sunday, they are just the right consistency for those final glazes. No other brand comes close in this regard. It also helps that they mix well due to the limited pigments.
Pretty much my same favorite Pro Acryl paints, except for ivory and magenta. I love sneaking in magenta when I can, especially in contrast to the jade. But ivory was the first bottle of their paint I needed to replace, I tend to use it instead of white 90% of the time I want white. I also found myself using the transparent orange a lot more often than I expected.
I love using ScaleColor Artist paints. They have amazing matte finish, lovely colours, and they mix nicely. And the biggest advantage for me is that I don't have to shake them. I injured my hand a few years ago and if I overwork it, it hurts and I can't paint. Not having to shake bottles (and things like vibrating shakers are not any better for me) extends the time I can paint by a lot. So I almost exclusively paint with the ScaleColor Artist paints and don't mind having to thin them down. It helped me learn what consistencies I like for painting.
I'm going to be honest, I've only ever used Reaper, Citadel/Games Workshop, Army Painter, and Vallejo. I use Vallejo most often, but Reaper is probably my favorite for paint behavior, supply, and versatility (brush, airbrush, toothpick.) However, Vallejo smells like cotton candy through an airbrush and taste the best. IYKYK
I found it worked best for me to try the same 2-3 colors in a bunch of different lines to figure out the main line I liked the best. Then of course you have the washes + metallics, etc, but you know... can't solve every problem in a day.
So glad to see I am not the only one with a horde of paints on my desk. I thought I was bad with 356 paints and counting. It’s so bad I use the app “Model Colors”on my iPhone so don’t buy doubles. Works with my tracking my pile of shame too! 😂
I have spent a lot of time and money collecting various acrylics, oils, acrylic and alcohol inks, powder pigments, pastels and acrylic paint pens whilst preparing to setup my own hobby channel. But the thing I have invested the most in is creating my own line of paints, contrast paints, washes (oil and acrylic) and effects paints. My channel will be focused on budget DIY solutions for the hobby sphere. Creating my own paints allows me to perfect and tailor my paints to my liking.
Lovely. If you want something glorious to ad to you collection. Admittedly excessively difficult to get your hands on. Look out for - Rohrer & Klingner Antique Ink. All the colours are lovely as they look like the colours we like on miniatures and not the very singel pigment standard palette usually found in ink ranges.
As a beginner it would be really cool to hear your thoughts on what paints to get at different budget ranges like 50$, 100$, 200$ because I'm honestly super lost and intimidated by the amount of choices and not-so-insignificant cost of each paint bottle
The AK Interactive "Anime Figures" set is a great starter for their paints, grab some of that Vallejo Aluminium and you're good to go for a lot of painting. Though I do love the Vallejo Express colours: Cardinal Purpple, Gloomy Violet, Plasma Red and Mystic Blue and my Citadel Garaghak's Sewer and Black Legion are always at hand. I'm also a big fan of Reaper's Polished Bone, Aged Bone, Blonde Traid set and Fair Flesh traid, the last of which works great with GW's Seraphim Sepia. And I definitely don't have your paint problem, but then I haven't collected sets because someone sent them to me either. :)
I agree with your stand on AK interactive. Most consistent major paint line in the market. I adore their intense colours. I'll try the pastel tubes then. Cheers
I'm not so much a paint hoarder as I am a model hoarder. I've supported multiple patreon groups for STL files, bought random cool models I've seen, and have backed multiple kickstarters with at least 200 models per product...
I own the entire Monument collection as my base, then I get some recommended paints from other ranges to fit specific purposes. One I love is Snakebite Leather Contrast from citadel.
I also have a number of paints that is somewhat overwhelming. I find getting myself to focus on using a single line to learn that brand's strength is really difficult. I mix them into my lines I'm confident with, but that eventually pulls me back to my regular paints. Is there a method to testing new colors to ensure you use what you bought? I also find some just will never be used and I'll need to donate them if I won't use them and can free up space for those I do. Vallejo, Reaper MSP, Scale 75, and Citadel are my go to. AP, contrast and speed paints, p3, and warcolor are ones I tend to avoid.
I was a pure citadel guy for years. it's what I learned on and knew colors for. but my flgs has ak and man it's become my go to. so smooth, so matte, but coverage is great.
Started with vallejo model color set. It was ok, but not all the colors mix how you would expect. e.g. you get grey/brown etc. I thus switched to soFlats, which are expensive. Or at least some of them are. You do get more paint though. I don't understand the Kimira paints, or the fancy scale 75 paints. soFlats are readily available from a lot of art stores, including blicks. I'm not a good painter, but it's really fun using just a few paints and mixing. I really enjoy working witht he Phthalo green and blue. The quinacridone magenta is awesome. If I was going to buy a new set today, if I was starting out, I would get proAcryl paints. I also like to use DW inks more than I should. I blame Vincy V......
Really great stuff as always. Between this and your latest "cleaning house" vid, it's great to learn from someone who has tried soooo many paints out there. I've started looking at AK and Pro Acryl only, and it's overwhelming! You mentioned in this vid that you could probably get away with 25-30 paints from AK and be set...care to make a vid about those 25-30 paints? Amazing stuff sir!
I also backed Nocturna and it's the worst kickstarter product I've backed. Complete and utter garbage. I've used them as a basecoat to rundown urban environment terrain pieces since the colors and consistency get obscured from all the weathering.
Only 1848 bottles of paint? That's cute...Let's see: I have both old and new Reaper, the entire Army Painter line including Speedpaint 1.0 and 2.0, Secret Weapon, GW (I still have some Go-Fasta Red that hasnt dried out), P3, Scale 75, Vallejo, GW contrast (but not all of them) Cote d' Arms, I even have a few pots of Armory Paints laying around somewhere...And I'm thinking of buying the Nostalgia '94 line from Warcolours 😅
I have a sh!tload of paint, but you win 😂 Complete sets: Pro Arcyl, Kimera, AP Air, AP Warpaints, AP Speedpaint ver 1, Liquitex ink. Lots of the Citadel colors. Though I'm getting rid of AP since the other brands are so much better, mainly sticking to Pro Acryl and Kimera.
Sorry to say Jon, I'm not even in triple figures for paint, and theix of colours is kinda dreadful. As a frustrated obsessive compulsive, your lovely racks make me very happy and there's no judgement from me, other than not javing them ALL PROUDLY ON DISPLAY!!
Man If only Raid would make some of their characters into STL files... And then have RU-vid hobbyists paint them. That would be an insane add for their brand. HINT HINT
Sad, I have more paints than you do. Sigh. I agree 100% concerning Warcolours, Nocturna and Army Painter. I recently gave away 98% of my Games Worshops paints, as I just never used them (excepts the washes and contrasts). Never liked Vallejo. Love the new AK, Golden SoFlat, P3 (hard to get in Australia), 2 Thin Coasts, ProAcryl and Kimera. Quite like the Scale 75s still. However, my 'everyday go to's are still Reaper (been using them since they first came out in the early 90s) and D&W FW Inks - the one range I could not do without.
I have to say, the new formulation & bottles for Vallejo Game Color have been perfection for me. The new VGC Dead White gives Pro Acryl's Titanium White a run for its money!
Back when I started miniature painting about 3 years ago, I got some pretty sweet deals on some Army Painter Warpaints for 1,20€ per bottle (an online store I used closed up and cleared inventory at 50-60% discounts). Some paints I still use on a regular basis but like half of them are TERRIBLE. When AP came out with the Speedpaints, I got the starter set and switched over to painting slapchop-style almost exclusively. I'm more of a tabletop gamer than a painter so a quick way to make my minis look good enough on the table was fine for me. After watching some of your videos, I decided to grab some AK 3rd Gen bottles for colors I needed more of and I haven't looked back. I've gone back to painting the classic way for now!
This makes me feel slightly better about my overflowing paint racks. I'm a sucker for Scale 75 and AK, I'm currently using the Scale 75 Artist acrylics on a little Butterfly-Frog and I love how easily and smoothly they mix.
I keep a majority of my paints in a Fireball whiskey plastic bucket, but I've outgrown it fairly quickly... in terms of paint numbers. Just have to get another bucket of shooters I suppose...
Hehehehe, and here I am, a long time armor modeller, with MUCH smaller paint everyday collection! Buuuuut, they are ALL shades of brown, gray and green. Especially green. Green everywhere. *sobs*
Thanks for sharing 👍. When you got to the Pro Acryl range my wife thought I was going crazy because I was audibly agreeing with you that they are all great, I use Olive Flesh all the time oh and Dark Ivory is great too.
1. Oh, good another P3 enjoyer. :D Coal Black is oddly versatile. 2. Not tried the "normal" Scale 75 paints, but their metallics are easily the best I've ever played with.
At a certain point, set design is a consideration and having 17 3/4 paints just looks derpy when having 29375939 paints nicely organized looks “artsy”. At least that there’s a level of mania involved that adds pseudo-credibility. 😂
I've been in the hobby for a few years I've mostly used CItadel paints and have a couple Vallejo colors mostly White and Sky Blue, anyone have some good recommendations without breaking the bank? I was eyeing the Army Painter 2.0 speed paint line but wasn't sure if it was worth it.
Man can i relate. I paint mini's, busts, scale models of all kinds (air, armour, scifi, auto etc) so have soooo many paints etc. Entire Minitaire, AK Real Color, Vallejo Model Air and large amounts of Tamiya Acrylic, Tamiya LP, P3, Citadel Contrast, Ammo Acrylics (man they are rubbish), AK Acrylics and so much more. I have just moved to a nice drawer based storage system to free up bench space and it means i have 90% of my psints and most used supplies within reach. So many worse things to spend ya $$ on.
Yeah, I have way too many paints. I have not counted them, but I know I have almost the full range of citadel paints. I do have the full range of new shades and contrast paints. I have some Reaper, Kimera, Army Painter and Vallejo paints. Plus Oils and pigments... After watching your video, I now what more paints. lol
Yeah, you definitely are not alone. I have more minis, and models in 1/72 - 1/16th scale than I will ever be able to build or paint. But if ANYONE tells my wife, we ARE going to have some issues!!!
After years of collecting and using paint, the easiest thing to do is bulk sell the paints you barely use. It clears and eases the mind, it also creates space for the paints you do use. But Ninjon, you could do a give away for the paints you don't use. 😁 (Army painter or your vallejo paints ☝️) No scale modeller/miniature painter collects too many models, tools or paints. Are they out there? #sarcasm
I feel like donating your lesser- or never-used paints to some kids at your FLGS would be the move. Like, the Army Painter paint sets that live in isolation from the rest of your hoard, that would make a young someone estatic to receive. Same goes for the Scale75 you're moving out and the like. Hell, even the Nocturnum and the weird tube paints would be better used in the hands of someone who otherwise wouldn't have paints to work with. The upside for you in all this, aside from helping young or poor artists get their start, is that you'd have more room in your dragon's lair for future paint ranges! Seek help. But maybe not Darryl's help, though he tries.
Nooo, you dislike warcolour 😢. I love them, the gel feels good when painting. And when aplied as layers for example greeb 5-1 they make amazing vibrant and "deep" colors without visible layer shifts.
