I still use my Apple Thunderbolt Displays. Was considering upgrading but after I looked at the new Studio Display it's not that much better to justify spending $1600. Even as a video editor and color grading. It would add more screen real-estate and brightness, but for video color correcting and sharpness, it's really not as big of a difference as I thought it would be. I plan on keeping what I have longer, maybe upgrade if Apple makes a 32' Studio Display or an HDR 120Hz display. If you already have one, I don't think it's really worth upgrading unless you really need it.

I'm using my 2010 24" Apple Cinema Display (mini display port connection not Thunderbolt) with my 2020 MBP M1 13". I connect both to an OWC Thunderbolt dock. The 24" Apple Cinema Display connects via a mini display port to USB-C adapter--which I purchased for about $14. I purchased the 24" Apple Cinema Display in 2010 for around $600 and it's still going strong. Couldn't be happier.

I agree with you 100 percent. I own the larger 2010, 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) Display and it has been working great for about 12-years. A couple of years ago wanted to buy a M-1 "Mac Studio" and made an appointment at my local Apple retail store to learn how to connect my display. I carried the 27-inch Cinema Display into the store and none of the Apple employees knew how to make it work with a "Mac Studio". Learned weeks later on RU-vid that, all I needed was just like you stated a mini display port to USB "C" adapter which, I now have. But, Apple, Inc. lost the sell of a new "Mac Studio" (smile...smile).

I have new M1 Mac Studio and this Thunderbolt display works perfectly with all controls working. No need to download anything for control. Only thing required is the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 (USB C) adapter, which you show. I bought this display of course used last year on FB Marketplace. Not one scratch on it. After a month bought another one, an extra in case something happens to it (as insurance). For potential buyers, marks rub off with a cloth that is wet very lightly. I learnt about cleaning this display on another RU-vid video here.

I have 2 of these using a MacBook Air M1 and they are fantastic. I have dual display setup and clamshell my M1. Since the M1 doesn't support dual display, I got a Dell D6000 docking station with display link (you need the display link software) and One of the monitors is thunderbolt and the other has mini display port which is converted to HDMI and connects to the Dell docking station, the specs are the same it's just the connector that differs. All controls work and having the camera built in is a big bonus as well as a wireless keyboard and track pad give me a clean set up. I just disconnect the 2 USB-C's when I travel and off I go, when reconnected everything starts right back up (the second display takes a few seconds to be recognized).

If you NEED 4K/5K then by all means do that, but if you're using a computer for general office tasks (email, Web, word processing, etc) then 2K is plenty good. I bought my TB Display a couple years ago. It was a late production like-new and in the box for about $220usd. Used it with my MBP 15” 2015 and now with a MBP 14” M1 with the TB 2-3 adapter. With the M1 all the display settings and MacOS work perfectly. Positives; an APPLE design which is still beautiful and modern looking, superb build quality all metal and glass, very good sounding build-in speakers and the webcam is ‘good enough,’ legacy ports are actually useful for me with older accessories (and the MBP M1 has enough USB-c ports), even an Ethernet port, so with the one display to computer cable makes it clean in use. The display itself is still a high contrast with excellent color. Wish it was brighter in a daylight room, and the reflections are there, but in a dimmer light or at night it really looks great. At 2K or 1440p it is not the sharpest and if looking the individual pix can be noticed, but at normal view distance not so much so, it is sharp enough. No height adjustment, so a stand or just something under it, the angle adjustment is enough. For the price, build and view quality, it still is a very good option.

It aged awesome. The design beats 9/10 modern monitors. I wish it priced 100$ in my region, but it's closer to $300 and I actually don't need a monitor at all)

Awesome monitor, the only two draw backs is that it’s not that bright and it dissipates heats. Other than that, it’s an awesome display 👍🏽

I recently bought one for my M1 Pro MBP and it works perfectly. Even the system brightness setting works straight from the keyboard, although I was baffled to realise that while having the Thunderbolt Display plugged I can only adjust the internal screen brightness by hitting ctrl + brightness keys (F1/F2) on my external Bluetooth Apple keyboard (and vice versa with the integrated keyboard). So is this functionality broken in Ventura? I'm still running Monterey

Will this work (with adapter) from Thunderbolt 4 on a new M2 to the old Thunderbolt monitor?

Just picked one up off Facebook marketplace for $150. Looks great, but sadly does not work with my x1 carbon gen 12 with thunderbolt 4, even with the Apple adapter. My plan was to switch between that laptop and a Mac mini. Frankly, the lack of controls on the display is a little frustrating, especially trying to get this thing to turn on when using it on a pc. Kinda wished it just had a power button and multiple inputs.

I have had this monitor since 2011. I have replaced the original laptop and now run a 16" 2019 Mac Pro. I bought the adaptor and all worked well, till now. The Thunderbolt cable that runs to the adaptor is starting to fail. Barely move it and it "shorts out" causing the screens to die / recover / die and so on. I want to replace that Thunderbolt cable, but it seems to be built in, as I cant get it to unplug from the back of the monitor. A little worried to pull REAL hard on it to get it out. Does it unplug from the back? Would live to replace that cable. We are high volume wedding photographers and have never had a problem with this monster..Thanks for the video. Well done.

it does not unplug from the back, to replace the faulty cable it it is necessary to open the monitor (is easier than it seems according to the tutorials about this) the irony is that the inside end of the cable is just plugged to the circuit board

If you plan to build a dual monitor setup with old Thunderbolt displays, you should take into account that the devices almost all have different brightness levels due to their age. Over the last few years I've had about 7 Thunderbolt displays and the brightness has been between 3,900 (almost yellow image) and 5,900 (pretty good white) lux. Apparently the displays burn out over the years depending on how heavily they're used. I measured 6,500 lux during the iMac 5K DIY monitor conversion.

Hi there. I have a mid 2012 macbook pro and a Thunderbolt Display A1407 I got used from Craigslist. It's in beautiful shape, but . . . it won't power on. It did at first but after not using it for several months I tried to use it and nothing. Dead. Black. Any wisdom? Both are surely outdated as far as getting help from a Genius Bar. I just need a genius comment to save the day for me. thanks in advance.

Yesterday I bought a 2020 MacMini with the M1 chip. I found a great deal on the Thunderbolt display, circa 2013, I had Apple look up the serial number. But the tech support people told me that this monitor is not compatible with the MacMini with the M1 chip. It had to be a 2019 or earlier. I found two videos that talked about a Cable Matter HDMI to Display port adapter, but in reference to using two monitors with the Mac Mini. Your solution is much simpler. But they warned of voltage output in the two monitor solution and the Cable Matters adapter solving that. Do you think the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 will work with the MacMini M1. Its a much more elegant solution and I agree with you about having it be an Apple product vs a more modern different brand. Thanks

This is precisely the setup I'm using (M1 mini, Thunderbolt display, T3-T2 adapter), and it works perfectly: it's exactly as if I were sitting in front of my old 2012 iMac 27" (but of course, SO much faster!). I'm afraid your tech support people are very wrong in this case!

Has anyone found a way to connect this display to HDMI? I love my old monitor but the new MacBooks removed one of the valuable USB C ports and replaced it with HDMI, which I rarely use. I hate having to swap drives in and out all day, so if anyone has come across this and found a solve, I'd love to hear it

Came across this because my 2012 display appears to have died on me, I can attest that it does (or did lol) work pretty seamlessly with the 2021 macbook pro. I just upgraded macboook late last year, but wasn't ready to drop $1500 on a new display. It works as long as it's connected to power. As I was watching, I was like oh, funny... I have a flexispot desk... and then a few minutes later, oh look.... Vegas. 😜 Know anyone local that can tell me if it's repairable?

You should be able to go to Settings: Displays: then two windows should pop up, one for the Cinema Display and one for your Mac. You can adjust brightness from there.

I would totally use one of those displays because I remember it when those came out those were Untouchable for people that were poor like myself and still today I'm poor so if anybody would love to send me a screen of such precedence I would love it LOL. I still appreciate your video from a few months ago talking about getting the Apple iPhone 11 and I would love to find one of those too but those are really hard to find because just like your video said they're Bulletproof and very reliable why would you change it's one of those Niche things that just become just that untouchable. Thank you brother for all your good videos
