What about the On-One Rocky Road? A titanium Bikepacking bike with a carbon fork and sram 12sp for not much over £1000. It’s hard to know why this bike is being completely ignored, except it’s British!

Nice list. I am going to advocate for the Salsa Beargrease as a Fat option. I actually have mine currently set up 29+ with Surly Corner Bar (and some aero bars), it is SO good! Incredibly versatile four season bike.

I used a Specialized Chisel for the Idaho Hot Springs Tour last June. Great value for an entry level bike.

Pretty hyped on my Fearless Warlock. Was able to score one “used” from a guy that rode it under 500 miles on rail trails. I’ve since ridden it on a mix of gravel, easy trails and even some chunky mountain bike trails. It’s handled it all. Climbs well, is comfortable on trail, responsive enough on road, and feels confident when loaded down.

Cool bikes! I ride a Surly Krampus 29+ on Knards 20mi a day bike commuting through a variably crappy bike unfriendly route in the Chicagoland area. I like to pretend I'm on a tour or I'm practicing for one. Love the versatility, not nearly as slow as a fat bike. After years riding it I can roll 17-19mph just like any other MTB. Sure it can be a beast in the wind, but it makes me feel like a hero when I ride my efficient 38c grav grav and it reminds me to stop rushing through life. 29+ forever!!

I’ve been riding a M/L Chromag Surface Voyager since last summer. It’s super versatile yet progressive. I’ve been riding tech single track with the dropouts pushed forward, and fire road epics with the dropouts pushed back.

The updated Stanton Sherpa looks like a good bike for backcountry xc & with decent enough frame space for bikepacking with a bikepacking fork(like the Bombtrack BPS). I also like the Fenrir after 16 months of riding Otso's Waheela S. Like their flip-chip design & how it rides; so an Otso with clearance for 29+ & slacker hta sounds real fun.

I really wanted a Jones plus, but getting one into Canada last summer was impossible so I ended up with a Surly ECR 27+ (29ers were sold out). It’s doing the job.

A Ritchey Ascent, Tom Ritchey knows more than most about getting the best out of atube set. I can't wait any longer for a test/review so have ordered one and it's due into wholesaler in a few weeks. I'm building it up with a mix of Shimano GRX and XT Di2 groupset, wheels are going to be 2.6"× 29"er

I love my 2021 Spesh Chisel. It's about as fast down the tracks as a gravel/CX bike, yet can handle some rowdy trails. It's alloy, so not as precious about it taking a knock or two and climbs like a mother... Got some well fitting bags, but not had chance to take it for a long expo yet. It's a rocket though.

I really enjoyed this review of the best bikes of 2021. I am starting to get into bikepacking and trying to make the most informative choice on a rig. I really like the Priority 6x, which is a belt drive bike that was designed by Ryan Van Duzer. What it is your opinion on belt drive bikes? I know you channel is primary focused on chain drive bikes. Hi my question is in regards to the fork. As most of the bikes in your video has solid forks great for mounting points but how would the ride be like on say a gravel bike or hard tail with solid fork behind a Mr Ripply on the track in the video. Can a solid fork go down places where the Trek 1120 goes. I personally prefer hard tails because of the straight bar but want to get into adventure bikepacking so no tar roads only tracks and I’m in Norway. Thx looking forward on your pro opinion 🚵‍♀️

Well I built up my own 2011/2012 Voodoo Bizango 29er for bikepacking using a second hand frame. Rear sliding dropouts, it could be adapted to a hub gear, and I'm surprised there aren't custom parts for those as it could be converted to 12mm rear axle, and theoretically a belt drive as it's twin sliding bolt rails, and keeping to an old but common hub width would make it easier to find parts when touring abroad. I built my own wheels using 32h hubs Shimano rear/Novatec front with Mavic rims, and new 120mm RockShox fork up front, bought from someone refitting a new bike. Fitted MTB style 104 hollow-tech cranks, a Zee rear derailleur and narrow wide chain ring. And the best parts I could find from a local manufacturer which is Superstar Components, which includes some fittings like clamps and pedals. Got Rockbros bags on it and it does what I need it to. No point spending a fortune on a bike you have to nanny.

Chumba Stella Ti with Fox 34 Stepcast, Industry Nine wheels, Wolf Tooth and Thomson bits, Jones H-bar securing the XT parts together. Add a Brooks B-17 for the butt. With i-30 rims you can run 2.25" - 2.6" tires in the Stella frame to cover most terrain.

Was looking at the 1120 Trek with the racks. Bikes all set up to go. I don't like guessing what rack fits where, brakes sticking, squashing and rearanging cables. I'm not too brand specific, just a fan of no headaches. Agreed your last statements on the balance shocks & travel. My current bikepacking is an old Specialized FSR XC Pro with 120 in front & 100 or so in back (I think it has two mounting positions in back 90/75: you ever see this?) Anyway it rides plush & decent with those fasttrack tires & I have a pump that does the shocks & tires...good bike...but heavy, and the cables are a headache, and the 3x never shifts good up fron t

One bike that people easily pass up and I really understand why....the pricepoint lacks some value, but it's the Ridley Kanzo A. It's not a bike I own, but I do own the Ridley X-trail which is exactly the same frame just lacking the refresh of GRX, gravel bars and a slight upgrade to the wheels. Where people sleep on this is that it's an aluminum frame that you don't have to worry about scratching up with bikepacking gear, but the more important feature is that it swallows 700x50 or 27.5x2.3 with no problems. The front triangle is massive even on a size small (which is what I own) and I can fit a half frame bag and 2 water bottles inside the frame and mount a 3rd under the downtube. It's really an overlooked bike that is quite simple but is actually quite good!

While I’m still awaiting my steel Tout Terrain Outback XPlore 275 with Pinion gearbox and Gates Carbon Drive, I picked up a (barely) used steel Tout Terrain Metropolitan with Rohloff hub and Gates Carbon Drive. It’s probably safe to say that the chain-driven derailleur bikes in my existing quiver will be the last I ever buy. I’m a belt-drive convert. I briefly considered a Tumbleweed with Rohloff a while back, but discarded that idea when I became aware of Tumbleweed’s stance on belts. Call it irreconcilable differences.

Hi Samuel, thanks for watching. So it sounds like you are doing more road. You could consider a road based geo bike with larger tire clearance. There are so many bikes out there and your budget will play a big factor. The Palago Stavanger would work really well for you, or another option could be the Surly Midnight Special.

Yesterday I posted a comment that is not here today. I can only guess that it was deleted because I left a link to the website where I bought my bike. I'll not mention the brand or post the link today. I will say that I received it the first of April this year. It is a bikepacking specific bicycle with 29" wheels, a Wren air suspension fork, a Pinion C1.12 gearbox and Gates Carbon Drive. It is a hardtail and has many braze ons for adding gear. Tektro hydraulic brakes. It is a joy to ride, have loved every minute of it. I would really like to know why my comment from yesterday was deleted. Was it the link? You asked at the end of the video for comments about what bikes looked great in 2021. Mine looked and still looks great in 2021. Thanks for sharing...........

Marlin frames are great but the longevity of components drops a lot from a 1000-1500 bike to less than 1000. You could bike pack on your bike and have a great time though. I’d suggest getting a thick pair of grips because the forks on a marlin dont absorb tons of vibrations and your hands will hurt after an hour,

It went together easily in less than an hour. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

My 2018 Surly Karate Monkey with Moloko bars; bars make bike So versitile (!). Steel by far, is the best for any purpose if you don't have Titanium money. Aluminium is too harsh of a feel; esp. on an all-day/bikepacking rig (!). Drop-bars Only belong on road or CX bikes; Lame for true mtb./bikepacking use and not enough bar to hold onto in rough terrain (e.g. rock gardens, nasty jeep-roads, etc.) and a weird hand position... Lastly, F.S. bikes are lousy for bikepacking, no room in the front triangle and no eyelets on the frame for front and rear racks (Practical items deemed 'uncool' by bike fashionistas who are also masochists...).

@earthstick 2 года назад
I don’t see the point of these shallow drop bars. May as well use bullhorn bars and fit the break levers on the end of the bullhorns. All the benefits of riding on the hoods and the best access to breaks. Someone needs to make wide bullhorns with a 31.8/25.4 clamp section, internal cable routing, long reach, 20mm i.d. ends. 50+ cms wide.

The proper answer for the best entry-level bike is the bike you can get your hands on. If a mountain bike from Wal-Mart is all you can afford, then that is the perfect bike for you. Just get out there and enjoy your life. If you want to upgrade later, you can save up for it. And if anyone on the trail is a jerk about you having a Wal-Mart bike, that just means that even when they are out in nature doing what they say they enjoy, they are still miserable.

True , but Walmart tend to break all the time . I say test out the bike on a short trail first before you go to long trails , because the last thing you want is breaking down in the middle of a long trail .👍

@Shampoo Less11 true that. But very few people are entering bikepacking ready to take on the great divide.
