I bought a 2006 Key West 1720 that was never waxed or covered ever and was a chalky queen. I tried using compound and glaze but the haze came back and I knew I needed to sand into the gelcoat then compound and glaze. I was using Dewalt palm sander that was taking for ever and I saw this video. Wow this is a beast!!! The key is to get a softer 5" hook and loop pad. I bought then used the Max Shine machine in your video using 320 grit, then 600 then used the Mirka Abralon 1000 grit then compound and glaze then followed up with a ceramic coating, WOW. Its a brand new boat!!! Thank you for suggesting this machine and I cant be thank full enough, this machine is a work horse!!! Between each grit of sand paper I did use dykem and acetone and a visual sanding aid to make sure I did not go too far in when sanding since moast gelcoat is only supposed to be around 25-30 mills. I did use a conventional orbital polisher (Milkwaukee 5504) for the compound and glaze. My polisher is heavy and that is where the Max Shine unit came in handy. This thing can sand like nothing else and cover territory from one zip code to another very quickly. I used the Mirka Abralon 1000 grit wet and this is another design advantage over the Dewalt palm sander is wet sanding the motor to the palm sander is right there not offset for use with water. The wet 1000 was key to getting an easy to compound out surface. Thank you again for suggesting this Max Shine sander/polisher!!!
@@DrakesDetailing hey Drake are the videos in detail u still valid for purchase? I want to start my own biz but still want to support you. Pls let me know
Hey Drake, I'm polishing a boat tomorrow for the first time, not heavy oxidation, so just needs a quick polish. I'm gonna use a maxshine m15 with a blue lake country hdo pad and menzerna 400, followed by Jescar sealant. We'll see how this goes...haha
@@dsgaming1893 It turned out pretty good, the only issue i really had was the non skid had some dirt marks where a brush and apc wasn't enought to get them out. I'm thinking using a steamer might be a good way to get those stains out of the non skid, as well as steam cleaning the seats to get rid of stubborn dirt. But all in all, it went pretty good!
Sometimes I will do a light wash with Dawn dish soap just remove the oil from the compounds and polishes, and sometimes I will use alcohol wipes if I need to speed up the process 😎
You do beautiful work...and are willing to share your knowledge. That's a beautiful thing. How do we make sure that you get credit for any items we purchase from the ones that you use?
Excellent video. I actually returned the Maxshine M8V2 and ordered a Griot G9 / G8 kit with polishes, Ceramic 3 in 1 wax and a bunch of pads for $225 with a sale and a discount code. I did it because of the great lifetime warranty , 180 day return policy and the incredible ergonomics of the G9 and G8. I saved about $175 compared to buying separately and feel good about it but will probably go back to Maxshine for a 15 mm long throw. Your thoughts? Do you find the Maxshine M8V2 smoother with less vibration or just less likely to stall? Thanks for taking time to do the vid and respond!
@@anthonyscuderijr.cluchfc6602 How are you liking your G9? I'm in a similar dilema. Griot's G9 or Maxshine M8S V2 for $130. Did you find the G9 different or an upgrade from the M8S V2 you returned?
Hi Drake, first I would like to say thank you for all the educational videos you do to help us amateur’s that want to detail our boats at home. I would have never attempted to try to do this, but these videos have given me the courage to give it a shot. Based off this video I did purchase the M8S V2 8mm last year and tried a few things on my boat and was very happy with the outcome. Is there a wool cutting pad I can use for this machine? Also do you have any suggestions where I can get 1000/grit for wet sanding for this machine that is not a pack of 50. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Stacy! Thanks so much for the kind and thoughtful words! I really appreciate it! Unfortunately, there’s really no wall buffing pads for a DA polisher. dear polishers are not meant to cut heavy oxidation, which is what wool is meant for.
@@DrakesDetailing What about the LC Purple Foamed Knitted Wool Pads, or is it best to use the LC Orange CCS Heavy Cutting Pad? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j-uMEKkqkFI.htmlsi=c4kCWqkYUmfX8HA0
You can try it… but IMO the DA is still not powerful enough for it to make that pad do what it’s really supposed to do. However, you could put it in a force rotational polisher.
I have a sea ray weekender 225 I just bought, I removed two american flag stickers that were partially pealing, the boat color is SAND, and they left yellow stain's. I've sanded them starting at 1000, thru 2000, and nothing they are still there, other they putting new stickers to cover the stain's how do I remove the discoloration? Thank you, been following you for a while now, I've learned alot.
Hey bro! Normally I would say just wetsand it and buff it out, but I have seen gelcoat where no matter what you do the adhesive fro the decals permanently changed the color of the gelcoat in that area where the decal was
Another great video. Do you know how the setting on the speed dial relates to actual rpm? What setting do you recommend when using an orange LC with Menzerna 400 for polishing? And the setting when using a white LC with a wax/sealant?
Im someone who will not be buffing/waxing my boat alot. We have a short season in NY. So maybe twice a season. Would this maxshine machine be good as a do it all. Polishing waxing etc? I know a smaller machine would help for those tight spots. But as in cutting and polishing and anything else. Would this machine get all of it done? Or is there another one you would recommend ? Thanks
Just bought this M8S with your code. THANKS 😊 I'm new to this what pad do I need for only waxing? I'll use a hand towel to remove the wax. Thanks love your videos.
Drake, I just picked up this DA polisher and used your discount code, Thanks. I have a question when removing oxidation from nonskid is there anything else you have to do besides wet sanding to get in between the little dots ? Also, I will be restoring my own boat after wet sanding can I just come back over with the DA polisher ? Or is the Makita rotary polisher necessary? Not trying to spend a whole lot. Thanks and keep up the great work
Drake, I have a 21’ NauticStar Coastal. I am planning to do a little wet sanding some scratches and use starke elevate and ignition then cap it off with jescar power lock. I have a dewalt buffer, can I use that for all of the products in lieu of buying a polisher just for me to use on my boat?
Yes, you can finish out with a rotary, and I know several people who still do that. However, a forced rotation machine or a DA will definitely help remove the swirls to make it more of a glass finish at the end. With the rotary, you will still see some halo/scratch marks from the buffer.
Hey drake! I really appreciate your videos and I have a video request if you could take the time to make one. I’m looking at doing more in water boat details but I’m worried about cleaners because of the legal rules on fresh water. What cleaners and process would you suggest for cleaning boats that are in fresh water during your cleaning? Thanks in advance for anything you’re willing to explain!
You are very welcome! Most cleaners are safe to use on the water. Simple Green is a very environmentally friendly cleaner to use that won’t hurt the water.
I currently own an Meguiars MT300 DA. Being a DA it tends to stop spinning with mild pressure unless its turned on full. Will this DA bog down the same way or will it stand a fair bit of pressure?
This will for sure be better than the Maguires DA in that respect. But at the end of the day, DA polishers are just polishers. They are not made to remove heavy oxidation or to be pushed on very hard, or else they will bog down.
I found a Griot's G9 newly opened box for $130 locally and the Maxshine M8s v2 costa $129.99. Knowing what you know which one would you choose? I'm a weekend warrior who wants to polish his cars for fun.
The discount code does not work. I put it in the Amazon cart option in the Max Shine website. Does the code outdate? Great videos! Going to go wax my Malibu.
Hi, do you use this item for compounding as well. I am looking to replace an older Meguiars unit. I need a polisher of this size that will perform compounding and polishing. Kirk Kirk
Im just about to do a boat. Mainly do cars but only use DAs (rupes mark 3, max shine m15pro, etc). Are those good enough for buffing and waxing gel coat. Its for a dealer so doesn’t have to be perfect just shiny enough for sale
Would the 21 cut more than the 8? Just wondering why smaller polisher if Boats are soo much larger than cars? Just curious. I have a 21mm already for cars
Totally wrong answer, its the bigger plate combined with the bigger offset/throw that matters. Thats why the 21mm longthrow polisher was developed, to be much more effective especially on large surfaces. Your assumtion is correct, the 21mm is the right tool and/or a rotary. This whole video is nonsense.
Hi, thanks for this video! Do you know where the m8s (v1 *and* v2) replacement carbon brushes can be found? The company doesn’t have them, and I can’t find them anywhere. Thank you!
I’ve personally have never done a full restore on it, but here’s what I’ve done to polish it up to make it look better than protect it. 😎m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gogYqyj1mS0.html
Always getting value out of your videos! I bought a Harbor Crate rotary buffer and I went to change out the pad for the 1st time the other day and the velcro backing tore off with the pad 😭😂😆 pos! I'm switching to a DA!
It’s just harbor freight ha You’ll still want a rotary for heavy cutting, but this DA is a great machine for light polishing, waxing and sanding is need be!
The m8 pro is a forced rotation machine. The m8s is a dual action polisher. One is designed to do light cutting and remove swirls, and the Dual action is basically for very light polishing and applying sealant.
A little of topic from this video but since this is your last video: My boat has those yellow stains in the water line and it feels like only way to get rid of those is applying oxalic acid. Only problem is that after the acid it doesn't last even a day and it looks exactly the same again with the yellow line. What would you recommend doing for it? My thought is that the gel coat is just bad in the water line and need to be buffed but the boat is on the water and lifting up is not an option atm.
I personally prefer a short through because it does not throw you around as much and you can control the quality of the job easier working a smaller area 😎
I'm planning on compounding, polishing, and waxing the nonskid, walls and gunnels of my boat that have a very dull/chalky look. Can I use this machine for all three steps or do I need the rotary makita too? On a budget so don't want to spend on it at the moment.
Unfortunately the Maxshine is not powerful enough to remove heavy oxidation. You will need a rotary buffer like a Makita or a. DeWalt to remove the heavy oxidation with wool pads and heavy compound, then you can use the Maxhine DA to polish and wax with 😎
@@DrakesDetailing ok, I bought the makita, I'm going to attempt polishing and waxing with it as well. I'm ok with some holograms since it's the interior and the boat is full of sun damage. Thanks
Can you explain to your viewers how an 8mm throw could be better than a 21mm throw random orbital on big surfaces as a boat? The 21mm will do the job x times more effective and faster...why it was invented. Your advice makes no sense at all am afraid. "The best boat detailing polisher on a budget" is a desent 21mm longthrow machine or rotary.
I disagree with you, I dislike 21mm throws because of the long throw. Boats have large areas which is true, boats also have a ton of curves, edges and corners which the 21mm can not get into! I like the small throw because you have much more control especially for beginners and you can operate the machine easily with on hand! 💯
@@DrakesDetailing Its fine, each to their own, just stating facts so viewers are aware. If you have a mobile home, camper, truck or boat, set aside plenty of time and hope your really fit with an 8mm polisher and 5,5" pad, you will be at it for while...👍
