I’m glad you told the truth about DOT 5 brake fluid. Many guys with older cars that aren’t driven daily swear DOT 5 is the only way to go. Because it doesn’t mix readily with water, if/when water gets into the system, it can collect at a low point, like a caliper. That water will, over time, cause corrosion.

My favourite brake fluid is made by a brand called Bendix, its dyed blue so its super easy when you're doing fluid changes because you can literally see the fluid change colour to blue so you know its the fresh stuff, also good for figuring out exactly where leaks are coming from

I have flushed, and switched my older vehicles to DOT5. Silicone really preserves the system in rarely driven vehicles. But Scotty is correct, it does not work in "most" ABS systems, it is slippery, heavier viscosity, and slightly compressible.

My brake fluid boiled once. Foot went straight to the floor coming down from about 80mph quickly in my 300zx turbo. Learned to flush it out every couple of years and use good fluid from that point on since brake fluid absorbs water like a sponge. Got close to death that day!
@luisloks
@luisloks 6 лет назад
well thats what you get for riding like an ass. Brake should never reach that level on normal driving. it seems you were going full douche on the highway switching lanes like crazy.
@HoosierDaddy_
@HoosierDaddy_ 6 лет назад
il Lock + no. Actually I was on a racetrack. I'm a driving instructor also. The brake fluid was contaminated with water. good try trolling and being a miserable human being though. Do you have anything constructive to add to any car related issues or do you just assume everyone drives like you. And I know you are that aggressive driver. Everyone who bitches about them is.
@frankhoward7645
@frankhoward7645 6 лет назад
Brad. I've always subscribed to the theory that DOT 3 is fine for the street and DOT 4 is for the race track. I understand that your fluid was contaminated with water and that led to the failure, but tell me what you were using, DOT 3 or DOT 4?
@HoosierDaddy_
@HoosierDaddy_ 6 лет назад
Jess John + not at all. They sell test strips to see how much moisture is in there. Will use them on every car in the shop. And it's so cheap, we just usually throw it in as part of a 2-year or 30000 mile service. If it's fine, leave it alone.
@HoosierDaddy_
@HoosierDaddy_ 6 лет назад
Frank Howard + this was many many years ago. When I was 16. I failed to properly change all the fluids before I had a fun track day so I paid the price. Back then it was most likely. 3. This would have been in the early 90s. It was terrible and I should have known better. And I agree with you on that 3 and 4 I just use what the car calls for. You can never go wrong. Just make sure it's not full of water. That cap is left off for 5 minutes it seems like it absorbs it like a sponge.

A friend of mine was trying to clean up brake fluid after a wheel cylinder failed. He was using gas which would not work. I told him its not a petroleum based, that brake fluid is water soluble just hose it off. Well after another 1/2 hr, he finally did and it worked. Being an engineer he can't stand being wrong, but after a while he admitted he didn't understand. when I told him it was glycol based he just stared at me. It's one of the reasons brake systems need to be flushed every brake job. Yes I know hardly anyone dose that, but they should.

DOT 3 should be just fine for most "normal" drivers. If you do a lot of excessive or hard braking, then definitely use DOT 4 - 5.1.
@Sseltraeh89
@Sseltraeh89 6 лет назад
Yeah, but you know what they say - better safe than sorry. I don't know how are the prices in US, but here where i'm from, Dot 3 isn't really any cheaper than Dot 4, so while Dot 5.1 is still considered expensive premium fluid, there's no need to run Dot 3 anymore, not even on old Pre-Dot 4 cars. You never know when you happen to drive down steep hill with lot of braking involved and you certainly don't want to risk boiling your fluid and loosing brakes just to spare some 2% on retail price...

I used to own a Porsche that I used to drive pretty fast at times and would sometimes boil the brake fluid in my front wheels, necessitating that I bleed them to get the air bubbles out. This was even with the highest quality DOT 4 fluid I could find so I did a little research and found a slightly expensive German fluid called ATE Super Blue Type 200. This stuff had a minimum dry boiling point of 536 degrees F and worked great in my car, no more having to bleed the brakes. There was a companion fluid that was identical but was amber-colored that I used when I flushed my brake system, usually once per year. The different colored fluid made it easy to see when I had flushed out the old fluid. Unfortunately, the government has banned the use of Super Blue in this country.

I use DOT 4 for my track car with race brakes on them. Never had a problem with brake fade decelerating from ~140mph+. I wouldn't bother with 5.1 considering the price and that I change the fluid numerous times a year on the track car. Too expensive for no gain. I suppose in endurance applications it would be useful.

I'm liking you representing Australia with the penrite fluids. Use them for all the fluids in my car, they work great.

DOT 5 is popular for classic and show cars. Doesn't damage paint, or absorb moisture while the car sits in storage or on display.

An added bonus of Dot 5 is it doesn’t eat paint like the glycol based fluids. Classic car dudes love Dot 5, but as Scotty says it doesn’t play well with other types of fluid, so it can only be used in a system with brand new seals.

Higher DOT brake fluid absorbs moisture more rapidly giving it a shorter life but higher DOT also has a higher wet boiling point requirement so it's a catch 22. Fluid with higher boiling points are also more likely to leak past seals. For a daily driver it's really about balancing longevity with performance. Always look for wet temp on the bottle. Stay away from racing formulations as they are designed for frequent fluid changes... Except for Castrol SRF but that will cost you way more than it's worth for a daily driver.

They should have named DOT 5.1 as DOT6, to avoid confusion with DOT5, since the two are incompatible and unrelated. Harleys were using DOT5 exclusively for the last 30 years, until the lack of compatibility with ABS became a problem on newer models. Before that a lot of Custom build Hot-Rods used it as well. Excellent for low mileage cars that see lots of storage. Not only does DOT5 not take on moisture, it does not hurt paint finishes, with accidental spills, unlike all the others. An important benefit for expensive paint jobs on motorcycles. Scotty never mentioned that. But, good video.
@Doonit_hard_way_since_65
@Doonit_hard_way_since_65 6 лет назад
That would not have bee possible. Dot 6 would be 315deg boiling point (aprox). The DOT number has more to do with boiling point than anything else. Since silicone dot 5 and glycol 5.1 are using the same min boiling point, they both get a dot 5. Confusing, yes, but what do you expect for a gov't standard?
