This is the new shimano spheros sw 8000 2021. Could this be the best budget fishing reel ever made? Surf fishing, Jetty fishing, inshore, offshore, everywhere. I do a lot of surf fishing, we all know surf fishing is tough modality. I need a surf fishing reel that can handle this tough environment, the spheros could be it!

Around 2006 I serviced a Spheros and a Stradic for my brother. Love the smoothness of the Stradic, though it’s loaded with parts, and was not fully salt ready. The Spheros was simple, robustly built, and all stainless internals. It was quite clean, and fast to service. Very impressive for a modestly priced reel. I’d recommend it!

I use a 2021 Spheros 10000 PG for offshore fishing from a kayak and it handles YFT, Wahoo, Mahimahi, and GT no problem. It gets splashed and dunked all the time and still running fine. Just make sure to oil the line roller to keep it from seizing.

The 8k size is a bigger body and rotor, the 14k is same as 8k but with deeper cut spool. 6k is good light line surf reel, 8k to 14k pretty much tuna jigging reels.

Just got the SW3000 Spheros for backwater fishing. Its gonna be sweet. Such light startup on the crank and soo smooth, almost Vanford smooth, I own both. Plus the roller bushing will last longer than the bearing on previous Stradics. I think Shimano got it right with this lineup in their respective categories.

Agree 100% about the drag Clicker. I have some reels that are silent when the fish pulls drag. In my opinion it makes fighting the fish more difficult because I find myself watching the reel instead of watching my line & the water. I want to listen to the drag and watch the line & the water while Im fighting a big fish. A loud Drag Screaming is an adrenaline rush for me. Where we disagree is the Daiwa BG. Yes they have quiet drags & thats a drawback but I have the BG 4500 & the BG 6500. For the price. (on sale for under $100.00) I find them to be VG, Smooth as silk reels with plenty of power. Besides I didnt purchase them with surf fishing in mind. That said, I do plan on adding another Shimano to my Collection & the Spheros SW looks like the ticket. I enjoyed UR report.

On the 4k size the downside is it has 3 plastic small gears inside but I believe they can be directly swapped for the twin powers which are metal. I dropped my reel on the floor and the plastic gear moved and I reeled it and folded over two teeth that’s when I noticed looking at parts diagrams it might be possible to swap them. Just make sure it’s the same size reel

No mate, the bg was a response to the spheros, not the other way around. And it failed, though came close and offered decent value in its own way. Closer with the mq. Now the new one is here and shimano stomped again. Only question now is how well the slammer 4 competes against the gosa sw-a, or should I say, spheros sw-a, or dare I say, the saragosa sw, as im waiting to see whether the slammer 4 offers me any real value over those 3 shimano models. It remains to be seen if the slammer 4 is any upgrade over the slammer 3. Shimano-san did well to trickle down to the spheros swa and create some tidal waves in the "competition". The penn clash 2 already failed as a response to the spheros even before it hit the stores. Thanks for your vids mate, I always enjoy them. Cool voice too.

I would love to hear more of your thoughts on the Slammer 4 vs Gosa. It’s been 4 months since you wrote. I am going to buy a couple of spheros for some cheaper rods I have, and I am planning on buying a 10,000 saragosa for another rod. Isn’t the swa you mention the newer and better sw? Would like to hear your thoughts
@vizionsys
@vizionsys 2 года назад
@@Colonel1Bravo the slammer 4 is heavier, not sealed as well, has a smaller main gear although made of brass, and is much more expensive. At the moment there seems to be a lack of reports on the slammer 4 regarding reliability, where almost none are needed for the gosa swa, its track record is established unlike the slammer 3 that had handle, pinion sealing and roller bearing issues, which were later fixed silently years later, none of which have yet been confirmed absent from the slammer 4. The Swa is a true upgrade, they took a great reel and made it better constructed with longer screws in better places, making the body stronger despite being a hybrid aluminium and carbon infused body, compared to penns that is full aluminium. its even better sealed, much larger cold forged aluminium gear and brass pinion next to the penn, its lighter, has a redesigned one piece handle for optimised cranking power that can handle higher loads, it has improved AR clutch mounting making it even stronger, the pinion and gears are changed to be more centred for more crank power, it has floating main shaft for better stability (infinity drive), requires less servicing, butter smooth dual drag albeit slightly lower rating than the penn, but retains the carbon infused rotor whereas the penns is metal. The new swa gearbox is more compact and the traverse block is upgraded for higher strength. The new swa delivers superior cranking power with tighter tolerances, has 6 minebea mitsumi Japanese made bearings compared to 9 non-japanese in the slammer 4. The swa isn't as smooth as the slammer 4 when turning the handle, but under load the swa is the more solid reel. The line roller assembly is also completely sealed to ipx8 and better designed in the swa. And it's cheaper to buy the swa. The larger SWA models 18k onwards have a spool bearing for added support and a backup antireverse. The gosa has brass bushings instead of bearings for the handle and oscillation gear. There's a new slammer 4, the DX edition, which has an upgraded stainless steel main gear and pinion like the okuma makaira, and depending on the grade of this steel, may be the only significant advantage over the saragosa, besides the metal rotor which only helps to yield a slightly smoother drag at the top end but milliseconds only. The DX is also sealed better than the standard slammer 4 but so far I don't know how it compares to the SWA. It may at least be to the standard of the previous model SW?? The DX is also more expensive. Durability wise the stainless steel gear and pinion of the DX is a strong combination and a formidable upgrade. As for the "whole package", that's dependant upon your preferences. So i leave you with this, how did they improve the sealing in the new DX? What was missing in the normal slammer 4? With the swa you are buying a stronger locomotive drivetrain version of a stella, in some areas even better than a 2019 stella, minus the aluminium rotor, hardened spool lip and less bearings due to having a different drive train. The only bearings that could theoretically be added to the swa are the secondary oscillation gear mounting, handle and spool. But their absence doesn't impede performance. With the spheros swa you buying a watered down saragosa with a less capable drag force and different 2 piece handle and other price appropriate changes. Same sealing however. Its about price. The slammer 4 may well only be able to provide a full aluminium metal rotor and body, a stainless steel main gear and pinion in the DX, a slightly higher drag, and a smoother experience than the gosa swa which is quickly forgotten under load. Does that justify the price? To read the full engineer's review of the swa, visit alanhawk.com and browse the reviews section.

@@vizionsys that’s an amazing write up and you have been so generous with your time and opinions. Wow, so greatly appreciated. I’m certainly sold on the Saragosa. I feel like trying the DX, yet my next thought is why do that when I could just use that extra money on more gosa’s instead
@vizionsys
@vizionsys 2 года назад
@@Colonel1Bravo you're welcome. You are right, the gosas are leading the way bang for buck. In all honesty, both reels will offer a pleasurable experience. The slammer 4 is a tank of a reel, it will take some heavy abuse no doubt, but at the end of the day it is really a personal preference. Sometimes it's a simple matter of going in to a store and seeing/feeling which one you prefer, but especially in the case of the gosa, it really must be used in the field in order to appreciate the feel and power of it. Although it may be the case that you can get a new slammer 3 for cheap, that may be an option depending on what the real differences are between the slammer 3 vs 4. If the slammer 4 isn't much of an upgrade, the slammer 3 may still be a reasonable contender if the price is right but it would to be priced in the spheros ballpark!. The only thing we don't know for certain is how well sealed the slammer 4 is. However if you don't plan on dunking or splashing the reel, the fact that it's full metal with a higher drag may be the more appealing reason for you to consider it. Perhaps penn will someday make a leap forward and increase the size of the main gear. I would have considered buying a dx later down the track if the prices dropped significantly if only the main gear wasn't so small. It bothers me personally. I highly recommend you read Alan's review of the gosa, where it is compared directly to the stella. He is the man you should be listening to, he keeps them all honest and calls out any nonsense in the fishing industry. Cheers and best wishes with your purchase. Regards.

@Colonel1Bravo 2 года назад
@@vizionsys thank you so much. I already know I will definitely buy a 10k saragosa for my needs. One day, like you, I may consider a DX if the prices stabilize more. I’m sure that is sometime off. The 3’s that are listed as cheap here in America are not in stock, there are plenty of 3’s in stock yet at a slammer 4 price

I was keenly anticipating purchasing a BG MQ or getting another Spinfisher VI. Then I learned about the 2021 Spheros SW A and I am so glad I did. The BG MQ has a cheap cast zinc main gear, the average owner won't be able to remove the side plate for service, and its sealing has an Achilles heel. The SSVI is very nice -- decent sealing, quality gears, good drag, etc. -- but the Spheros is just a little more refined.

I got 2X 10000 to replace BG 5000 for flat lines, live bait pitching on surface on trevalla mh (sailfish and Mahi), 1X 14000 to replace Stradic 8000 FJ on Centaur combat arm inshore popper (plugs, poppers, jigs) and 18000 to replace saragosa 10000 on trevalla XH (bottom snapper, AJ and what comes, I have loaded them all with 50LBS yo zuri super braid. Was thinking to put 65lbs on the 18000 but will try 50 instead to reach bottom easier when in current or wind situation. Drag is only 40 max anyway and that's on paper... 600 yards haha (Tomo's tackle sells bulk spools at reasonable price. The BG's 5000 have been good to me, blackfin tunas, sailfish mahi but water gets in them and clicker is not loud enough as you mentioned in your video. to be noted that the 14000 and 18000 did not come with spare spool shims in the box, luckily the high was correctly set in factory.

@christiancml
@christiancml 2 года назад
The Ultegra is a great reel but it will only take water splashes. It is really not designed to be in the water. It is designed for long casts and the 5500 is for light Surfcasting, with this I mean it should be used with maximum 4 oz sinkers and will handle moderately sized fish (up to 15lb or so). I have two and use them at the beach with great results but I would never attempt to wade often or fight big fish. Ultegra's casting performance with my 13-ft rods is awesome and you won't need to wade at all. At the beach, the Spheros will be ideal for those that like to wade and get closer to the water, it is a powerful and very rigid reel, so targeting big fish (Tarpon, Sharks, etc), should not be a problem at all. Spheros will not cast as well but not too far off the Ultegra in the right hands with the right rod and technique, it is not slow oscillating and its spool is of a smaller diameter (about 8-10mm comparing Ultegra 5500 vs Spheros 6000). However, Shimano has the best line lay in the market and the AR-C spool, you may loose 10% distance all things being equal. Both great reels!

I'm looking to buy the 10k size to load it with 65lb braid for surf fishing with bait. What would be a good rod to pair it with? Was looking at the Tsunami Trophy 2 Surf Rod 10.6ft Heavy rod. Rated for 4-8oz and 20-40lb mono

Most of the better reels bail arm will not automatically close...this is to prevent your lure from snapping off if you touch the handle by mistake while casting

@qwiswaz9774
@qwiswaz9774 2 года назад
im pretty certain the 5000 and 6000 are the same reel body with different size spools , like the 8k and 14k are the same with differnt size spools. look at the reel weights and drag specs. 20/30lb braid go with the 5000/6000.... 50lb+ braid go with the 8000/14000

SW 6000 is the way to go because the next model (8000) the weight is heavy for casting. I have the SW 6000 HG and SW 14000 HG models for different applications. If I need more power I use Torium HG and Tyrnos II for offshore fishing.

Hate to break it to you bro, but $120 plus tax…IS NOT A BUDGET REEL 🤷🏼‍♂️😂🙈. It isn’t even close to a budget reel price tbh.
@BeachBomberFishing
@BeachBomberFishing 3 года назад
Ok well, go buy a sougayilang from amazon then. You have to understand that reels range from $50 to $1000, a $140 reel falls in the budget and value category.
@IWillNotArgueWithMorons
@IWillNotArgueWithMorons 3 года назад
@@BeachBomberFishing Reels definitely don’t start at $50. $50-60 is probably the top end of “budget” reels lol I would never own a Sougayilang or whatever that is either! Unless you dunk your reels in saltwater, there are awesome reels available in the $50 range. Shoot I have a handful of Shimanos that are beyond awesome, on close out, for $30-35 in the 3000-4000 sizes. You do you, but calling this reel a budget reel is beyond fantasy. Vast majority of people that fish spend nowhere close to that much money on their reels. That’s reality. Rich people do…and others that are convinced that you have to spend big money on a reel do. I am a hardcore fisherman and have been fishing much longer than you have been alive. Can assure you of that. Again, you do you, but this isn’t a fun get reel lol.

@@IWillNotArgueWithMorons Penn Pursuit or the Fierce is still the best budget reel for the money unless you dunk the reel and even then you can work on them rather easily.

If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.
