Best sub 200$ saltwater reel, by far! I own two 6000s and a 10000 size, basically a saragosa for half the price. Very smooth, tight sealing and loud drag clicker. Just more drag pressure would be perfect Maintenance is also much easier than Daiwa with their Magseals and MQ Body…..
It is a poor mans stella. ive used and abused my 20k spheros throughout a year, have not serviced it yet and it still performs like the day i bought it. Very impressed with the quality of components and smoothness of the drag.
I've got the 8K and the 14K. I prefer them to my Penn Spin Fisher VIs In terms of smoothness, the louder clicking for line going out, and sealing, but all of these reels are great value and quality.
So I have to ask, I’m getting a new combo to target snook and tarpon, since you have the 8k do you think that an 8k is more fitting for this or should I go down to the 6k. My friend has the 6k and he hooked into a big tarpon and it almost spooled him before the knot pulled, that being said, it is perfect for snook. Should I just go 8k and loosen up the drag when it comes to snook?
I had 2021 SW 18000 HG Spheros with 80lb power pro, 80lb flouro leader, silver metal 8oz jig, Terez rod and I used for off shore Hudson Canyon trip from on Voyager boat from Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. At my first use I caught 50lb Long fin Tuna. It performed really good, took about 15-min to land a tuna, my drag was at a end very tight, but 80lb line and leader helped, I say this is very capable reel, but bit heavy.
Can I ask.which model Terez you have? I bought a conventional Terez on accident a few days ago, need to return it for a spinning model. And I am going after tuna..
twinpower has a half plastic, half aluminum frame as well and Speros and Saragosa are identically aside from the bail and the drag/spool and of course the back up anti reverse in the big reels, but for all smaller sizes it's just the drag that's a real difference. if you wanna savemoney a spheros with a Saragosa spool will work. I personally have the Spheros 14000 and honestly the max drag is a bit low for my feel, but if necessary you can put your hand on the spool, since the whole reel is designed to hold the Gosas max drag. I would've bought the Gosa in the forst place but it wasn't avaiable and I needed it for a trip, so I went with the Spheros.
the back up anti reverse in the big reels is a huge deal though, I had anti reverse slips and could have fractured my spine or even skull with an unlucky fall on the rocks. for any big fish reel I don't go without an back up anti reverse that's strong enough to support at least 40lb withouf failin', I go up to 60lb of drag on spinners quite frequently, takes tons of fitness and technique though
one trick to get the drag knob out: just pull the spool up, or completly out, as you only really unsrew the drag knob to remove the spool anyway. super easy with any spool
I have a 6k and 10k. The 6k is amazing but the 10k really struggles with those tiny drag washers. Try lift 10-15lb of weight with it and you'll see the drag sticks like crazy. It's fine on a topwater setup since you generally don't run that much drag, but on a jigging setup where you turn the drag up it's no good. My Spinfisher VI's drags are like butter so I prefer using them.
I personally like the jointed handle, just much easier to get in a rod bag, but I see why in heavy duty reels a one piece is better, but just wash your reel and the joint shouldn't be a problem
Bought one it was broken in the box, bearing issues, always check before you leave the store. Went back in and swapped it. The next reel was a solid machine nice feel to it, I only use penn Reels. This is like buying a luxury car and ditching the beast 4x4
I have the Spheros that came out in 2019 in a 3000 size and I absolutely love it. It’s not stupid expensive and I brought it to Florida and managed to catch a lil 3 foot bonnet head on it and then brought it back here to Colorado and I’ve been using it for catfishing
Just tested the max drag of my Spheros SWA 14k, fully spooled and actually even a bit over tightened, literally couldn't tighten it up any more which is already more than I would do on most reels since this can cause damage, since I already knew it would put out less drag than advertised (I felt it over the rod) and it's the same reel basically as the Saragosa which has more drag output. So this reel is advertised at 12kg max drag(~27-28lb) but it only put out 8kg (~18lb) which ain't that much if you consider that a few (granted, upper mid range to high end reels) 4000-6000 reels can produce this amount of drag. Just know that with a full spool this reel just puts out 2/3 of what Shimano claims. I personally only use it to catch, well, what I call bait, will land big fish but only if you have space to play them out and Have enough line so you don't need higher drag to stop fish. For the price it's alright, but definitely worth to go for the Gosa and don't expect too much and don't believe what manufacturers claim as max drag, it's rarely true

Thesame with my 14k spheros too, it was advertised to have a max drag of 12Kg however i have tried hooking up with GT's numerous times tightened the drag to stop them from getting down the reef since im into rock fishing but i feel that the drag is less than what is being written by shimano. Got lot of line cuts from not able to stop the GT from running. give it away After few months of using 😀
I know this is an old comment but I found the same with my 10k Spheros, the drag washers are smaller than in most 5000 size reels. Not suitable for large fish at all. My 6k Spheros on the other hand is amazing, it can probably put out more drag than my 10k and stays smooth.
Up to the 14k there is no point in the saragosa, the spheros is cheaper and plenty adequate they share 95% same parts, but in the bigger sizes the saragosa drag is superior.
Somehow managed to snag the new 6k gosa and have to say it’s a dream. Will be picking up the Spheros also, especially for the price range. Used to retail for $200 now $130-160. Makes it a no brainer
Hello guys guess most of you from the USA, I'm o UK angler so don't get the impressive variety of fish you guys have, so I use this reel in the 5000xg format coupled with a 12ft 30-70gram two piece surf rod. I've been in the surf fishing with this reel for the past 18 months and it hasn't let me down. Good build, line lay is okay, I used the separate washers that come supplied with the reel to achieve close to what I wanted. Overall for a sub £150/ $200 reel you are getting a lot.
@@surfninjafishing8297 Stella and spheros are the same reel pretty much but different drags and gears and they make kits to convert it to pretty much be a Stella (coming from someone who owns both)
@@jeffreyscherer9308 just look up what reel you have and carbon drag washers and if you can put the Stella main gear on a spheros and then get high speed bearings i think you can it that’s the only difference
Nice reel for heavy saltwater reel, but how about for light saltwater reel, ive been eyeing on nasci but i heard that its not really good for saltwater, any recommendations for a 1000 sized saltwater reel?
Great looking reel. Any plans of using it on YFT 100 to 200 lbs. That's a big test for an 18K sized reel.........just wondering how it holds up in that scenario. Basically a Venice or Panama trip will answer some questions.

I have the 2014 design and I absolutely love it. I couldn’t find a Gosa 6k but ended up finding the spheros 6k and I couldn’t be happier with it. Very excited to try the new one

Try to get your grubby little paws on a Daiwa maverick. Do a review on that one.They are Australian only, their status is.....under a certate and saltiga, but above a saragosa. Im ordering one soon. They look beautiful red, black mag sealed and come in 5000- 20,000 sizes. Have the same internal gearset as a salitaga. Cost about $500--$600
Wish they made the new spheros in a lower gear ratio it's one of the reason I stuck with my 14 spheros sw for so long because everything now is 40+ inch per turn. It's easy to work a lure fast but it's hard to slow down for me atleast
I was thinking about getting one of these because it’s cheap because I don’t want to use my Stella or Twin power I have 4 Saragosa’s and I only use 2 of them . I’m a bit of a weirdo I buy reels and just put it in a display cabinet 😂
Same here. But nice higher end reels and buy a cheaper option like this to use mostly so I don't have to worry much about damaging or getting it stolen.
My good man,long time viewer here been under a few different accounts. I have a question and I’d really value your knowledge on it. Soooo I fish south west Florida all from land.I’ve been contemplating buying a sea doo fish pro as I don’t have the money for a boat or skiff. It enables me to fish waters I can’t normally. Do you think it’s worth it ? And what type of other fishing can it open me up to ? Really appreciate any advice you could give me and you da man!
yep yep, they constantly call reels that cost same as functioning good and long, chain saw, sawing machine, and many much more complex things, bigger things, cheap ! They have us hooked.
Interestingly you couldn't get this reel in Australia a year ago so I got one rather cheap from Japan, and now they sell here. Need it for larger fish while kayak fishing where surf splash happens.
You'd get ripped off here in Australia anyway. Somehow, the Japanese, USA, even the korean markets pay much less than what we do for fishing reels. I don't really understand why thats the case. Shimano is much worse than daiwa though, they take the piss with pricing especially higher end stuff
Now that you have used the Spheros how does it stand up to the Saragossa? I want to get a set of 4 to use for pitching baits to dolphin, sails, kings and tuna. If I offshore fish maybe 2 to 3 times a month and want to get into the pompano beach KDW style tournaments like the shootout should I spend the extra $150 each or does the spheros work just fine?
Years ago had bought a Spheros FA or FB. Used it one day for tarpon on a pier and by the second tarpon, it seized up on me and I popped off the fish. The reel was stuck and I couldn't turn the handle anymore. Not sure if that was a fluke or if anyone else had a similar experience, but I never trusted that model again. I would rather have a Saragosa.
Really digging the Spheros, picked up two 6000 sizes and I’m impressed. Have one on an 8 foot boat rod and the other on a 9 foot surf rod. I personally think this reel blows most other reels under $200 out of the water, including the Spinfisher.
Serious question. Have you had any issues with the line roller on the 6000 not spinning when under significant drag? Seems like all the 6000s I’ve used can’t really handle more than a few pounds of drag before the line roller stops spinning. I haven’t noticed any issues with the larger sizes
@@RyanMorie I maxed out my Saragossa 6k(same reel with more drag) several times in Norway with zero issues, actually held up better than the Certate SW6000, though you do need a heavier rod to use the Gosa.
Thanks! This is the most thorough review I’ve seen yet on the 2021 Spheros. How would you rate this compared to the Slammer 3? A little more expensive and higher drag, but for a 30/40lb setup the Spheros might be better value.
The slammer is a solid reel, more rigid aluminum body, more capable drag, however, the Spheros has a more reliable sealing design, and IMO Shimano has superior customer service
@@RyanMorie Thx! I'm liking the 10K size for a lightweight 40# setup with lower gear ratio for 50lb-75lb bluefin. Currently using slammer 5500 to get the job done, but the max drag for that size reel seems like overkill
@@Richard-rr6ze i got the 8000 size and I’ve been using it pretty roughy these past couple of weeks catching bull reds down here in Texas the only problem I had with it is I dropped it in the sand and got sand in the drag knob and it kinda of started binding and not wanting to make the clicking noise but the drag still worked find i went home washed it out with some fresh water and back to new
I got 2 2014 spheros sw. 5000 and 8000. Both are doing great. Intrested on the new pretty black and gold but still the old one done nothing wrong. Now i dont know.....Shit... why did i watch your video.
@UCTG7bdhtghmbM7MXoXJ60mg penn mariner 2 is a good rod. Not sure what you are targeting but a good all around is the medium. Only worry is the guide inserts but that’s the case with almost all rods under $50 Offshore angler Gold cup inshore is another good option If you’re wanting a rod for bigger game I’d use the PENN, for smaller stuff, or casting artificials I’d use the Offshore angler. “Best” all around would go to the offshore angler in a medium heavy power.
Not necessarily a poor man's stella. I buy them by the set of twelve so it makes sense too. I feel a set of 12 saragosas would run too much. Got my last ones 5 years ago they're still great. No different than the Gosa. I get four 8000s , four 10000s , four 20000s. Use 20ks for run and gun trolling. 10ks for live bait and dead bait casting , 8ks for lures/jigs. I mainly target mahi/blackfintuna out of South Florida
Daiwas bg mq is lighter and smoother, but has weaker sealing and is not serviceable at home. So basically, for inshore anglers, I'd recommend the bg mq, especially if your not dunking your reel.
40 pounds would ruin that reel in under 1 minute. That is where the Stella matters. Even the Gossa can’t handle that kind of drag pressure. That said, the cool story of a fish of a lifetime ruining your reel and the fractional price may still be a greater value.
