I am too, that’s why I’m talking about cameras 😉 Seriously though you don’t haha to spend a ton on a camera. Using what you already have is always the best advice.
I would appreciate a tutorial about camera movement/cinematography in general. I personally think it's a make-or-brake aspect of a video and many tutorials seldom cover it
Very good video. Quick side note: you can use a chromebook for animating, though the program I used for years suddenly no longer works. You can get stop motion studio on it, though it treats the cameras like phone cameras (basically flipping the view of the web cam, making it disorienting). Anyways, amazing video =)
Yes, I'm the first viewer of this video, at least you're not giving that advice again about having a DSLR lens on the edge of the body or something like that
Thanks for the important information, my friend. I make stop motion films myself with an iPad 8th generation and have been thinking about upgrading to a better setup. This video helped me a lot and you’ve got yourself another subscriber. Thank you.
I've thought about buying a dslr camera recently, though I am unsure about some things. If i were making a stop motion, would I need it to be connected to a computer or can it be connected to an iPad via BlueTooth (or does it need to be connect to anything at all)? If your taking photos for stop motion can you just take them on the camera, then put the sd card in the computer, export the pictures to a separate device and put it in a software for stop motion? Sorry for so many questions, I've always wanted to get a dslr but I don't know if it would work with my current setup.
I’ve heard of people doing that! Sometimes it’s a seamless transition. I usually don’t switch cameras in a single project but I have been known to use a different camera depending on what project I’m making.
u have no idea how helpful this was i recently lost my phone and have been really bored without a way to animate stop motions and this is GREATLY appreciated i am going to buy a c920 and have already downloaded software to my pc thank you so much
There's free Software for webcams, right? So if I conncted by DSLR, in my case Sony a6000, to my computer via a HDMI/USB adapter that essentially makes my camera work like a webcam so I can use the free software, right?
Not quite. It would just take pictures of your live view, which may be better than some webcams, but never as good as actuating the shutter on your camera. The DSLR software have live view *and* snap the actual camera shutter, giving you the juicy DSLR look.
This was weirdly a satisfying, comforting, educational/knowledge (at least in my opinion), well put video in my book. Honestly I watch this to kill time and watch random videos as I'm waiting patiently to finish my last year of college at 2024. If all goes well of course, with that being said. It was nice, but a bit tiny bit of myself truthfully I confess I actually wanted to be a LEGO stop-motion youtuber as a kid growing up in the 2000s. But dropped the idea since maybe it's too late for a grown man in his 20s to do so, but maybe once I get the time and money I'll probably slowly but surely tip my toe into the realm of Stop-Motion Animation and see where it will take me from there. Also I wanted a solid camera anyway like Peter Parker or Frank West haha.
Listen to this "Old Man", you are never too old to enjoy and do the things you find interesting. You only have 1 life to live, so live it to its fullest, its not like we get out of this life alive! (ha!)
lol I just haven’t had much success with their electronics in the past. That said, I haven’t tried lately! Even a bad quality camera is better than nothing (assuming it works, of course 😉)
I agree with alot of your points. I prefer webcam. quality. Its decent. It doesn't look oversatured. It doesn't feel like the creators are trying too hard to impress you. High quality DSLR cams. can be too distracting at times.
Thanks for uploading this. I was about to buy a DSLR until i realized there's not much difference between the cam. quality of phones, webcams, films, and a DSLR. If you get good lighting and photo editing skills, i think the photos will look almost the same haha. Buying a DSLR is a waste of money. You're not going to use the video feature if all you're making is stop-motion animation. If you're going to need a tripod, batteries, and other equipment then you might as well buy a phone or webcam.
I use phone camera but stuck on masking problem. The pics I took are diff. bright between the frame and the masking.I want to know how to fix it or dslr is the answer.
No, not typically. Either way it would be very difficult to move your characters properly if it was auto-shooting on a timer. Some DSLRs I’m sure have a type of Timelapse setting but I would never recommend it for animation.
The only necessary equipment is a camera and some LEGO! Before computers, people made brickfilms with camcorders and digital cameras, so anything's possible
I have a superzoom type camera. Not a DSLR, more like a bigger "compact" camera. It has a "stop motion" mode built in that adds onion skinning, and offers you creating a video once you are done. But anyway I prefer to use raw pictures. I copy them to PC and I'm going trough them deleting unnecessary ones, editing those, that needs being edited, and then I'm importing them directly to (free version) davinci resolve. The app needs some tweaking to be able to treat bunch of pictures as a single clip, but it works. And I'm quite happy with the process considering it's free, and overall look is much much better than when I was using just the phone.
hello, rio can you help me about my animation, i have a camera called "sony Nex-5" and i need help because alot of apps on the camera is 100 dollars up so do you have and free stop motion apps on my camera, Thank you :)
10:40 hey, notice you have the same canon SL1 as me! i'm having trouble with connecting it to Dragonframe 5, I get an annoying blue monochrome filter in live view mode when I connect it to the computer with an OG cable, have you had this issue? would appreciate some feedback!
have you ever used a webcam for stop motion? is it more clear than a phone? What kind of computer do you need for the webcam? By the way your videos are the best!
I personally use my phone with the stop motion studio app. I’ve heard of DSLRs and web cams like the c920 but they seem like a lot of work. I’m happy with my phone quality, but does a hero 8 GoPro work for stop motions too?
I’ve been using an iPhone with Stop Motion Studio Pro for my animations for the past few years. It’s served most of my needs, but I’ve been frustrated with the very shallow depth of field it has, which I can’t seem to adjust and which reduces most of the characters and scenery to a blur. Do you have any advice for this, or am I better off getting a proper DSLR?
You should try some of those iphone clip on "lenses". Some, especially the zoom ones, can give you some Depth of Field. Mind you, I've never tried them with stop-motion, so I don't know how well they'd work, but that might be a quick solution for you. Otherwise, a webcam or DSLR might suit you, depending on what computer/software combo you're using and what budget you're working within.
Hi, we just got the Canon Rebel EOS T7 camera and have one question: How to you set the focus so that EVERYTHING in the shot is clear? When we take photos, we can make some of our shot in clear focus, but the rest of it (other minifigures or the background, for exampe) appears blurry. Thanks.
If you set the f/stop to a larger number (meaning the aperture hole in the lens will be smaller, letting less light in), more of the shot will be in focus. It may be impossible to have *everything* in perfect focus but it can come close! You may have to boost your ISO or Shutter Speed to compensate for the darker picture made by the aperture change. Hope it helps!
Great video! I have an SL2 but I'm not willing to pay for the necessary software. I have shot for hours and had have had to trash so many frames because they weren't in sync. The phone is also not a great option for my liking so I will give the webcam a try. Thanks for the video.
It was very informative. I would like to know what advice can You give me to make my videos better. I just started a(different kind) of stop motion videos not too long ago and I eager to learn. Thank You so much and keep up the great work.
change your exposure settings. You may have to increase the light in the scene to compensate. Sometimes LED light bulbs cause the banding, though, so if that’s the case you’ll need different bulbs. But try the exposure first!
I have a Nikon D810 DLSR with (among others) 70-200mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4. And I use that for my work. But when making stop motion, I use my phone. So much easier to get great colors (without using photoshop or Lightroom) and also easier to get cool camera angles. If you have a big setup, I get what you’d use a DLSR. The are better quality. But for a light hobby, I’d stick with a good phone. (Oh and I’m using iPhone 12 with an iPad for remote control)
I have an IPad Pro and I use it to animate, but making different camera angles…yeah that doesn’t really happen, it’s really hard to make it shoot at different angles especially since the camera is at the top.
Are you using LED lamps or old fluorescent bulbs? Those often have different “phases” (the light technically turn on and off rapidly to create the light but faster than the eye) and create the banding. Otherwise check for antiflicker settings on your webcam software. I know Logitech webcam software is supposed to have it. The old version used to, you can download it from Logitech on their website if you Google Logitech Webcam Software.
