I bought the Sea&Sea Housing from Blue Water for the R5. I then watched this video very carefully and followed his setup recommendations to the letter. I just got back from Bonaire and got excellent results. Without this setup guide it would not have turned out so well, paricularly when it came to the tracking/focus settings. I was able to follow fast moving subjects like damsel fish with ease and had very few out of focus shots.

Whick lens do you recommend to shoot both macro and wide angle with the Canon R5 (I like the flexibility to choose underwater)? On the sony A7RIV, the kit lens 28-60mm can be used with a WWL-1 wet lens for wide angle and a Subsee 10x or CMC1 for macro. Is there a similar kit lens that can be used on the Canon R5 (i’m using a mount bayonnet for my wide angle and macro lenses to change them underwater).

That's a really good question! Unfortunately there is currently no good kit lens for the R5 that works with the WWL-1 and CMC as a versatile system. If you email me at nirupam@uwphotographyguide.com, I can follow up with the team at Nauticam to see if they have anything that they are testing in the works. My recommendation if you want versatility and water contact optics would be the WACP-1 with the Canon 28-70mm, 28-80mm, or 16-35mm. All work very well with the WACP which is a zoom through corrective optic that should give you sharp corners with rectilinear lenses. But this won't give you true macro. The Canon 28-80mm would also work with the MWL but again, we don't see any suggested diopters, so we would need to check with Nauticam to see if this would work well. Finally, the Canon 100mm macro lens can be used with the EMWL to get a "wide angle macro" field of view. It can be a bit tricky to use though. If you're interested in any of these options, feel free to reach out to me in the email I listed!

Hey Nirupam ! I just bought my self the Canon EOS R5 and im struggling with the best solution for a housing ! im either Aquatica or Nauticam user in the past.... but haven't found which is the best for me just for reviews..... I have a good question and I hope you can help based on your experience.... when shooting a diver with a lot of light in the background I normally use my strobes and boom perfect photo, but how would you do a shot without strobes to keep the beautiful light in the background and only have the silhouette of the diver in contrast ??? which all of my other housings it was a level and button to make in the housing and turn it ON & OFF. (NA-6500 and AQ-GH4). Considering the EOS R5 doesn't not have a built in flash you need a flash trigger for optical. What is the best solution for any of this housings ??? Thank you for your great work and please keep it up it help us very much !!!

Hi! I'm really sorry for some reason this didn't show up in our notifications. To shoot only in ambient light you need to turn off your external speed light control in the red menu (set flash firing to disable). You can also turn your strobes off manually. But you are correct - you will either need a flash trigger (both TTL and manual are available) or a sync cord with a hot shoe to fire your strobes. All housings for the R5 are excellent because it is a top camera for most housing manufacturers, including Aquatica and Nauticam. Marelux, Sea & Sea, and Isotta are other great mid range housing brands and Ikelite makes a great polycarbonate option. Fortunately I've had the opportunity to shoot each one of these brands so if you have specific needs, please reach out to me at nirupam@uwphotographyguide.com and I'm happy to point you in the right direction!

Curious how you do the WB correction shift inside a housing for video. With the r5/r6 using a joystick you can’t move the grid to adjust blue/magenta inside a housing. For raw photos and normal white balance color temps it’s not an issue, just only for video when you’re trying to shift it inside the correction grid.

Good question! I don't have a camera and housing in front of me at the moment, however I vaguely remember that it's possible to do so with the dials. If not, my recommended way to do a custom white balance would be to take photo of a white slate and register the custom white balance in the main menu. It's a bit clunky but very accurate.
