In the 80's, 9mm was considered "pussy" bullets so they made 9mm clips with 100x the capacity because no one wanted to buy them and they had to get rid of the stock space. Theres a scene which could be literally inspired by this in the movie Laser Mission with Brandon Lee, same exact VW Bus, even the same Color LOL while getting chased by an Army Jeep.

Kombis are rear engine, meaning if they aimed at the engine they could have stopped them, however vw kombis also were air cooled, so maybe it could have survived in the real world
